The Magic of Homemade Magic Shell

Remember the magic shell of your childhood? That liquid chocolate that hardened into a crisp shell the moment it hit the ice cream? Well, the magic is real, and it’s incredibly easy to recreate at home. The secret? Just two ingredients: chocolate and coconut oil. Melt them together, and voila! You have a base for endless flavor and color combinations.

Pink pitaya homemade magic shell

For this Unicorn Magic Shell, we’re taking it a step further by adding natural superfood powders to create those iconic unicorn hues. Pink pitaya powder and blue spirulina powder give the shell a beautiful pastel palette that’s both visually stunning and subtly flavorful.

For a traditional unicorn look, swirl the pink and blue colors together for a marbled effect. Or, like in this post, add the pink and blue colors separately to the ice cream cake, if it has blue frosting. The possibilities are endless – let your creativity shine!

The moment the homemade magic shell touches the cold ice cream cake, the magic happens. Within a minute, the chocolate hardens, creating that satisfying crunch. It is such an amazing and exciting thing to tap a spoon onto the ice cream cake and hear the crunch as the spoon pushed through the hardened chocolate shell.

Easy Unicorn Magic Shell Recipe

Here’s a simple recipe to create your own Unicorn Magic Shell. Get ready to impress your friends and family with this dazzling dessert topping!

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup white chocolate chips
  • 3 tablespoons coconut oil
  • 2 teaspoons of your choice of superfood powder, OR
  • 4-5 drops of food coloring

Instructions:

  1. In a heatproof bowl, melt the white chocolate chips and coconut oil together in a microwave in 30-second increments, stirring the ingredients together in-between each time. Continue until melted and combined.
  2. Add the tsp of superfood powder OR start with 4-5 drops of food coloring. Gradually add more powder or food coloring until you achieve the desired color and the color is well blended with the white chocolate. Allow to cool just slightly, for a minute, before serving on top of ice cream cake or ice cream.

Tips and Variations:

  • Chocolate Choice: Feel free to use milk chocolate or dark chocolate chips for a different flavor profile.
  • Natural Colors: Experiment with different superfood powders like beetroot powder for pink or matcha powder for green.
  • Flavor Extracts: Add a drop of vanilla extract, peppermint extract, or almond extract for extra flavor.
  • Storage: Store any leftover magic shell in an airtight container at room temperature. It will harden, but you can simply reheat it in the microwave for a few seconds until it melts again.
