This exquisite retreat is perfectly positioned for adventure seekers and those yearning for tranquility, presenting an ideal base to explore one of Japan’s most captivating regions.

Imagine waking up to an enchanting winter tableau: a silent, relentless snowfall transforming the ancient beech forest of Hakkoda Mountain into a mesmerizing wonderland. From the comfort of my hotel room, I was greeted by this tranquil scene:

Welcome to Aomori, famously known as the Snowiest City in the World, yet offering much more than just its spectacular winter appeal. It’s a destination that consistently captures the hearts of travelers and comes highly recommended for anyone planning an unforgettable trip to Japan.
🇯🇵 Discover Aomori Prefecture: Japan’s Northern Gem

Situated in the northern part of Japan’s Tohoku region, Aomori Prefecture is a land of striking contrasts and profound beauty. Renowned for its incredibly rich and diverse landscapes, Aomori is not only famous for producing Japan’s finest apples – celebrated for their crispness and flavor – but also for its dramatic coastlines, pristine lakes, and lush mountain ranges.
It is here you’ll find Hakkoda Mountain, a legendary destination globally recognized for its world-class skiing conditions, boasting some of the deepest powder snow on Earth. Additionally, Aomori is home to the breathtaking Oirase Gorge (as pictured above), a nationally protected area celebrated for its winding river, numerous waterfalls, and vibrant seasonal foliage that draws nature lovers year-round. Beyond its natural wonders, Aomori offers a rich cultural tapestry, from ancient Jomon period sites to vibrant festivals like the Nebuta Matsuri, making it a compelling destination for diverse travel interests.

For those seeking to immerse themselves in mountain adventure while enjoying sophisticated comfort, the Hotel Jogakura is an exceptional choice. Its strategic location, just 9 miles (approximately 14.5 kilometers) from Aomori Airport and 15.5 miles (about 25 kilometers) from Aomori Train Station, ensures convenient access from other major Japanese cities. This mountain sanctuary offers more than just proximity to the country’s best skiing and hiking; it provides a luxurious escape where every detail is crafted for guest satisfaction.
🏨 Hotel Jogakura: A Sanctuary on Hakkoda Mountain

The journey to Hotel Jogakura is an experience in itself. As you ascend Hakkoda Mountain, the road winds through dense forests, building anticipation. Upon reaching the iconic red torii gates that mark the entrance, the landscape levels, revealing the hotel’s welcoming presence. The dedicated and exceptionally kind staff are committed to ensuring your stay is nothing short of perfect, meticulously attending to every need so you can truly unwind and rejuvenate.

Guests have the privilege of choosing from several distinct room styles. The most expansive options include the Royal Suites, Grand Comfort Suites, and Grand Comfort Rooms. These exquisite Japanese-style accommodations are distinguished by their private in-room Aomori Hiba View Onsen baths. Crafted from aromatic Hiba cypress wood, these luxurious baths offer breathtaking views and the soothing benefits of natural hot spring waters, creating an exclusive spa experience. Depending on the season and availability, these premium rooms are typically priced between approximately $345 and $415 USD per night, offering exceptional value for their unique amenities.
For those seeking a multi-level living space, the charming 2-level Maisonette rooms provide ample space and privacy. Designed to comfortably accommodate 2 to 4 people, these rooms are an excellent choice for families or small groups, typically available at around $375 USD per night.

During my visit, I enjoyed the comfort of a Moderate Twin guestroom, a Western-style room featuring two comfortable twin beds, as depicted above. These rooms offer a cozy and functional space perfect for individual travelers or friends, typically priced at approximately $345 per night. Each room style at Hotel Jogakura is thoughtfully designed to provide a serene sanctuary after a day of exploration, ensuring a restful and memorable stay amidst the natural splendor of Hakkoda.
🍽 Gourmet Dining: A Culinary Journey at Hotel Jogakura

After an exhilarating day filled with outdoor adventures on Hakkoda Mountain, guests can unwind and indulge in an extraordinary culinary experience in the hotel’s elegant dining room. Here, traditional Japanese kaiseki awaits – a multi-course meal that is not merely food, but an artistic expression designed to delight all five senses. Each dish is a testament to seasonality, local ingredients, and meticulous presentation, reflecting Japan’s profound respect for nature and culinary craftsmanship.
Our elaborate kaiseki dinner was a vibrant symphony of flavors and textures. It featured perfectly steamed meshi (rice) and warming shiru (soup), accompanied by exquisitely fresh sashimi, boasting fish caught that very morning from the local Aomori market. The meal was further enriched by a diverse array of fresh and expertly pickled vegetables, showcasing the region’s agricultural bounty. Every component was a small masterpiece, arranged with precision and visual appeal.

A highlight of the dinner was the interactive konro experience. Each guest was provided with individual tabletop grills to cook succulent Aomori beef and fresh vegetables to their personal preference. This engaging culinary activity fosters a wonderful sense of camaraderie and community around the table, transforming a meal into a shared, memorable event. It was the perfect conclusion to a long day of exploring the Aomori prefecture, allowing us to relax, savor exceptional food, and connect with fellow travelers.

Mornings at Hotel Jogakura begin with a delightful buffet-style breakfast, served in the first-floor banquet room from 7 am to 10 am. The spread is a celebration of seasonal and local ingredients, featuring a wide selection of fresh vegetables, farm-fresh eggs, and, of course, an abundance of exquisite seafood sourced directly from the bustling Aomori market. Guests can enjoy both traditional Japanese breakfast items and Western options, ensuring a satisfying start to any day of adventure.
🧖🏻♀️ Rejuvenating Onsen: Hot Spring Baths at Hakkoda

The ultimate way to unwind after a day of exploring is to immerse yourself in the hotel’s renowned onsen (hot spring baths). Hotel Jogakura provides beautifully maintained, separate onsens for women and men, each offering both invigorating indoor and refreshing outdoor bathing areas. This establishment proudly hosts the only open-air bath in the entire Hakkoda area that is accessible and enjoyable throughout all four seasons, a truly unique feature.
The natural hot springs of Hakkoda are steeped in tradition, long believed to possess healing properties that alleviate fatigue and soothe the body. At the close of a particularly active day, I can attest to their profound restorative effects. Despite visiting in December, with the crisp mountain air signaling deep winter, the outdoor onsen was wonderfully warm and inviting. The gentle mountain breeze, combined with the tranquil sound of the nearby Toritakizawa mountain stream, created a truly magical and peaceful atmosphere.

Beyond the therapeutic baths, the large onsen facility offers additional amenities for ultimate relaxation, including a soothing mist sauna, invigorating rain showers, and a bubbling jacuzzi. For convenience, the onsen is fully stocked with quality shampoo, conditioner, and body shampoo. The women’s dressing room is thoughtfully equipped with hairdryers, baby cots, and cribs, ensuring comfort for all guests. Within your own room, you will also find a traditional Japanese robe (yukata) to wear to and from the onsen.
Please note: The photographs of the onsen and dressing areas were taken very early the following morning to ensure privacy and respect for other guests, when no one else was present.
It is important to be aware that tattoos are generally prohibited in most public baths across Japan as a matter of cultural etiquette. If you have tattoos, it is advisable to cover them with tattoo tape before entering the bath. I personally found this tattoo tape from Amazon.com to be highly effective and discreet during my travels in Japan.
