We enthusiastically kicked off our gastronomic adventures with a hearty and memorable meal at Monica’s, a beloved local institution in Livermore.

Monica’s Livermore stands as a premier destination for breakfast, brunch, and lunch, captivating diners with its inviting atmosphere nestled within one of Livermore’s historic original wineries. Monica’s prides itself on serving elevated American comfort food and freshly baked goods, with a strong emphasis on harnessing the freshest seasonal ingredients available. During our visit, I was particularly impressed by and thoroughly enjoyed the exquisite California Bennie ($14.95), perfectly crafted with crispy bacon and creamy avocado – a delightful twist on a classic. Wente Vineyards Estate Tasting Room: A Legacy in Every Sip

Wente Estate Winery and Tasting Room
5565 Tesla Road
Livermore, CA 94550
HOURS: Mon-Sun 11:00am-5:30pm, last tasting at 5pm.
Tastings start at $20/person
Established in 1883, Wente Vineyards holds a distinguished place in American winemaking history as the country’s oldest continuously operated family-owned winery. This remarkable institution is not just a cornerstone of the Livermore Valley; it’s a foundational pillar of California’s entire wine industry. A staggering 80% of all California Chardonnay can trace its lineage back to the original Wente Clone, a testament to the vineyard’s pioneering spirit. Today, fifth-generation winegrower Karl D. Wente meticulously upholds this impressive family legacy, crafting an exceptional array of four distinct Chardonnays that showcase the varietal’s diverse expressions.
Our group opted for the engaging Journey Tasting Experience ($20/person) at the elegant Wente Vineyards Estate Tasting Room. While Livermore Valley is undeniably a celebrated land for Chardonnay, my personal preference often leans towards more robust, full-bodied reds, which can sometimes be elusive in other wine regions like Oregon. I was delighted to discover Wente’s impressive selection of red wines, finding particular satisfaction in the complex and opulent 2016 Petite Sirah (pictured above, $45/bottle). Beyond the exceptional wines, the estate boasts beautifully manicured grounds surrounding the tasting room, providing an idyllic setting to unwind, savor a fine bottle of wine, and bask in the glorious California sunshine. It’s an experience that harmoniously blends history, natural beauty, and exquisite winemaking.
Concannon Vineyards: Home of California Cabernet Sauvignon

Concannon Vineyard Tasting Room
4590 Tesla Road
Livermore, CA 94550
HOURS: Daily 11am – 4:30pm
From the pioneering spirit of Chardonnay at Wente, our viticultural journey continued to another legendary Livermore institution: Concannon Vineyard, widely celebrated as the true home of California Cabernet Sauvignon. Much like Wente’s influence on Chardonnay, approximately 80% of all Cabernet Sauvignon vines in California trace their origins back to the iconic Concannon Clone. Also established in the pivotal year of 1883, Concannon Vineyard shares a rich history with its neighbor, adding a delightful layer of historical friendly rivalry to the region’s winemaking narrative. Ignoring any historical debates of who was “first,” we simply immersed ourselves in the exquisite offerings.
Concannon Vineyard delivers precisely the kind of bold, rich, and characterful California Cabernet Sauvignon that enthusiasts seek. Its wines are a true expression of the Livermore Valley terroir, characterized by their robust structure and deep fruit flavors. I was so impressed with their Cabernet Sauvignon that I happily acquired a bottle to bring back home, ensuring a piece of this exceptional California wine country experience could be savored long after our trip concluded. A visit to Concannon offers not just a tasting, but an immersion into the history and heritage of California’s most beloved red grape.
