Chef Peter Merriman, a visionary in Hawaii’s culinary landscape, is the esteemed owner behind four distinct Merriman’s establishments. The elegant Poipu Beach location in Kauai is a flagship, complementing his renowned restaurants in Maui and on the Big Island. Additionally, he offers a more casual dining option on Poipu in Kauai, a delightful pizza and burgers joint, catering to diverse tastes. At each of the main three Merriman’s Fish House locations, including the exceptional Poipu spot, guests are treated to an impressive selection of carefully crafted cocktails and a thoughtfully curated beer and wine list, perfect for pairing with their meals.

The culinary philosophy at Merriman’s revolves around what is proudly touted as Hawaii Regional Cuisine. This isn’t merely a catchy phrase; it’s a deep commitment to sourcing locally and sustainably. A remarkable 90 percent of the ingredients featured on Merriman’s menu are either grown or caught directly on the Hawaiian islands, utilizing responsible and sustainable methods. This dedication ensures not only the freshest possible flavors but also supports local farmers and fishermen, embodying a true farm-to-table ethos. This commitment to local, sustainable ingredients is a cornerstone of the Merriman’s experience, making it a must-visit for anyone seeking authentic fresh seafood in Kauai and a taste of true Hawaiian culinary excellence.

A Symphony of Flavors: The Merriman’s Poipu Menu

As befits a premier fish house, the menu at Merriman’s Poipu naturally features an abundance of exquisite seafood creations. However, Chef Merriman’s culinary expertise extends beyond the ocean, offering several delightful vegetarian options that ensure every guest finds something to savor. Our recent dining experience with a larger group allowed us to sample a wide array of dishes, showcasing the breadth and depth of Merriman’s innovative approach to Hawaii Regional Cuisine.

Delectable Starters: A Taste of Aloha

The appetizer selection at Merriman’s is so enticing and varied that one could easily curate an entire meal from these delicious smaller plates alone. Given our large party, we indulged in sharing several starters, each a testament to the kitchen’s skill and the freshness of the ingredients. These are perfect for initiating your culinary journey at one of the finest Poipu restaurants.

Ono ceviche at Merriman's Fish House in Poipu

The Ono Ceviche ($16) is a remarkable gluten-free offering that truly highlights the vibrant flavors of the islands. This dish masterfully combines fresh Ono with zesty AI Farms Tahitian lime, delicately shaved young coconut, crisp cucumber, a touch of spicy jalapeño, and aromatic cilantro. It’s served alongside crunchy sweet potato chips and slices of creamy avocado, creating a harmonious blend of textures and tastes. Each bite is wonderfully light, brilliantly refreshing, and bursts with an authentic Hawaiian zest, making it an ideal start to any meal.

pig and sweet onion quesadilla at Merriman's Fish House in Poipu

For those craving something more substantial, the Kalua Pig & Sweet Onion Quesadilla ($13) is an excellent choice. Four perfectly grilled triangles are generously packed with tender, slow-cooked kalua pork, house-made kimchee that adds a delightful tang, and sweet caramelized onions. This hearty appetizer is served with a side of sweet and subtly spicy mango sweet chili sauce, providing a flavorful counterpoint to the rich pork. These quesadillas are satisfying bites that showcase a fusion of local flavors, making them a popular starter.

sauteed shrimp

My personal favorite among the starters was the exquisite Sauteed Kauai Shrimp ($17). The shrimp were masterfully prepared with their full shells and heads on, a technique that significantly enhances their natural succulence and infuses the meat with a deeper, more robust flavor. Served atop a vibrant bed of fresh greens, accompanied by crisp cucumber kimchee, and tossed in a zesty Korean spiced citrus vinaigrette, this dish was a revelation. The interplay of textures and the bright, spicy notes of the vinaigrette perfectly complemented the rich, sweet shrimp, showcasing why fresh seafood in Kauai is truly unparalleled.

ahi ginger poke at Merriman's Fish House in Poipu

In terms of visual appeal, the Ahi Ginger Poke ($19) undoubtedly offered the most stunning presentation. This gluten-free appetizer is a work of art, featuring a generous spoonful of perfectly crushed avocado, a central serving of impeccably fresh ahi ginger poke, adorned with delicate kahuku sea asparagus, ogo (seaweed), and sweet onion. The dish is beautifully completed with a side of crunchy Grove farm sweet potato chips, offering a delightful contrast in texture. The vibrant colors and careful arrangement make this dish as pleasing to the eye as it is to the palate, a true celebration of local ingredients and skilled preparation.

lobster and crab cakes

You simply cannot go wrong with an order of the decadent Kona Lobster and Crab Cakes ($21). This appetizer is a superb blend of rich lobster and sweet crab meat, forming a truly satisfying and flavorful combination. Each perfectly formed cake is served with bright, local orange slices, adding a refreshing citrus note, and accompanied by a tangy avocado, watercress, and salsa verde. The vibrant salsa verde provides a delightful counterpoint to the richness of the seafood, making these crab cakes a consistently popular choice among diners.

While the starters at Merriman’s are undeniably tempting and could, indeed, constitute a meal in themselves, to truly experience the pinnacle of Merriman’s Fish House Poipu, one simply must venture into the realm of their remarkable entrees.

Main Courses: The Heart of Merriman’s Poipu

As we moved from the delightful array of appetizers, our fellow diners began to explore the enticing main courses. A couple of my companions opted for the elegant Macadamia Nut Crusted Kampachi ($41), a dish that promised a delightful texture and rich flavor profile, as well as the comforting and robust Seafood Linguine ($32), brimming with the day’s freshest catches. These choices reflect the diverse and appealing options available at Merriman’s, a highlight among Kauai seafood restaurants.

However, many of us, myself included, were drawn to the allure of the sea’s freshest offerings, choosing either the ever-changing fresh catch of the day ($39), showcasing whatever treasures the local waters had yielded that morning, or…

…the magnificent Jumbo Fresh Lobster ($49). This, dear readers, is precisely what I ordered, for one undeniable reason: LOBSTER! And not just any lobster, but a jumbo, fresh preparation at a renowned fish house in Hawaii. The temptation was irresistible, and I knew I couldn’t pass up this signature offering, especially considering Merriman’s reputation for exquisite seafood. It truly embodies the peak of Poipu seafood experiences.

This extraordinary lobster is raised with care in the cold, pristine waters of Keahole, ensuring its exceptional quality and sweet, tender meat. It is then expertly butter-poached – because, let’s be honest, everything exquisite is elevated when poached in butter, isn’t it? This delicate cooking method renders the lobster incredibly succulent and bursting with flavor. The dish is beautifully presented with marinated tomato, a fragrant basil butter that melts exquisitely over the lobster, and a side of creamy sweet corn–jalapeño whipped potatoes, which provide a delightful balance of sweetness and a hint of spice. This, without a doubt, is THE dish to order at Merriman’s, folks. You receive a generous portion of lusciously tender lobster meat, prepared to perfection, offering a truly memorable and indulgent dining experience that encapsulates the very best of Hawaii Regional Cuisine.

An Unforgettable Dining Experience in Poipu

Dining at Merriman’s Poipu stands out as one of the most cherished and remarkable culinary experiences I enjoyed during my visit to Kauai. From the moment we arrived until our final bite, every aspect contributed to an evening of pure delight. The panoramic views from the restaurant were simply breathtaking, creating an idyllic backdrop that enhanced the entire meal. The service was consistently friendly, attentive, and incredibly accommodating, reflecting the genuine aloha spirit that makes Hawaiian hospitality so special. And, of course, the food – every single dish was absolutely delicious, leaving me savoring every bite and craving more.

As is evident from the entree prices, dining at Merriman’s represents a more upscale option compared to other restaurants in the area. However, it’s crucial to understand that these prices are a direct reflection of the unparalleled freshness, exceptional quality, and sustainable sourcing of every ingredient used. What these prices don’t fully convey, though, is the truly unique ambiance. Merriman’s manages to blend upscale elegance with a wonderfully casual, warm, open, and family-friendly atmosphere. It strikes a perfect balance, making it feel luxurious yet approachable.

Perhaps due to its inviting Poipu location and open-air design, diners here tend to embrace a more relaxed dress code than one might expect at other restaurants of comparable quality, adding to the comfortable vibe. The combination of open windows allowing the gentle trade winds to flow through, along with the presence of live music on occasion, fosters an environment ripe for jovial conversations and hearty laughter among friends and loved ones. It’s a place where celebration feels natural and enjoyment is palpable.

I wholeheartedly and enthusiastically recommend that you make a reservation to dine at Merriman’s Fish House Poipu during your Kauai visit. Immerse yourself in the exceptional food, the stunning setting, and the vibrant atmosphere. It’s an experience you truly deserve to enjoy for yourself, a highlight of any Kauai travel guide.
