This blind tasting challenge is genuinely tricky, even for seasoned wine professionals, offering a fun and educational way to test your palate. My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed the challenge; I’ll just say that while he achieved an average score, I managed to secure an above-average result! It was a lot of fun and a memorable highlight of our visit. While enjoying your wines, don’t be surprised to encounter a charming cast of characters roaming the vineyards, including the neighbor’s sheep, wild turkeys, and Slate, the vineyard’s resident cat, adding to the bucolic charm. Among their impressive portfolio, the Yorkville Cellars Richard the Lionheart, a distinctive and robust red blend, quickly became one of our personal favorites, embodying the unique spirit of this exceptional winery.

During our tasting, we were particularly captivated by the 2016 Mendocino Ridge Pinot Noir ($45). Sourced from the esteemed Valenti Ranch Vineyard, this wine is a testament to the unique character of its origin. It presented as a gorgeous, elegant, and remarkably food-friendly Pinot Noir, boasting layers of complex red fruit, subtle earthy undertones, and a silky texture that lingered delightfully on the palate. You’ll almost always find either Alison or Eric, or both, warmly pouring wines and sharing their journey with visitors.
And if luck is on your side, you might also get to meet their incredibly famous Goldendoodle, Lord Sandwich, whose charming presence adds an extra layer of warmth and hospitality to the tasting experience. Alison and Eric are committed to crafting exceptional wines that authentically express the unique characteristics of the land. They achieve this by working closely with small, family-owned vineyards across various regions, allowing them to produce a diverse range of varietals that truly tell the story of their origins. During our visit, we were particularly impressed by their 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon ($60), a robust and elegant wine, and their bright, refreshing 2017 Sauvignon Blanc ($25), both showcasing the breadth and quality of their winemaking prowess.

During our visit, we were particularly impressed and brought home a bottle of their delightful 2017 Pinot Blanc, an incredible summer sipper that offers exceptional value at just $17/bottle. During our visit, we were enchanted by the friendly and knowledgeable staff who made our sparkling wine tasting not just informative, but genuinely fun and celebratory, exactly as it should be. They shared insights into the méthode traditionelle process and the unique characteristics of their estate-grown grapes.
However, a delightful secret many might not know is that Roederer Estate also crafts an absolutely divine Pinot Noir. This exquisite still wine is an exclusive offering, sold only at the winery, and you won’t even find detailed information about it on their website, adding to its allure. If your travels bring you to the picturesque Anderson Valley, I wholeheartedly urge you to make a stop at Roederer Estate. Beyond enjoying their signature sparkling wines, seize the opportunity to experience this remarkable, hard-to-find Pinot Noir. We were so impressed that we gladly purchased a couple of bottles, and I already find myself yearning to return for more of this exceptional, under-the-radar gem.

Goldeneye is the dedicated Anderson Valley Pinot Noir arm of the prestigious Duckhorn wine family, a massive and respected portfolio that also includes celebrated brands like Decoy, Paraduxx, Migration, and Canvasback wines. This affiliation immediately speaks to the caliber of their offerings. The estate grounds are nothing short of stunning – meticulously landscaped with vibrant flora, tranquil water features, and sweeping views of the vineyards. It truly is a beautiful spot where one could easily spend a leisurely afternoon. They offer several structured wine tasting experiences to suit different preferences, and we opted for the Essentials Tasting ($15/person + tax), which provided a fantastic introduction to their exceptional Pinot Noirs. The wines themselves are crafted with precision, showcasing the nuanced expressions of Anderson Valley Pinot Noir, from bright and fruity to earthy and complex, making Goldeneye a must-visit for any serious Pinot Noir enthusiast.

The undisputed grand finale of our Anderson Valley wine tasting adventures was an unforgettable afternoon at the 21st Annual Anderson Valley Pinot Noir Festival. Held at the picturesque Camp Navarro, this highly anticipated three-day event is a vibrant celebration dedicated to the valley’s numerous, acclaimed Pinot Noir producers. The atmosphere was one of pure camaraderie and shared passion.
