For a quarter-century, the remarkable ¡Salud! project has been a beacon of hope, providing crucial access to quality healthcare for thousands of vineyard workers and their families across Oregon. As it celebrates its 25th Anniversary, the organization is gearing up for its flagship fundraising event: the eagerly anticipated annual ¡Salud! Wine Auction, a cornerstone of support for this vital mission.
When we savor a glass of exquisite Oregon Pinot Noir or any other exceptional wine from the region, our thoughts often drift to the skilled hands of the winemaker crafting that particular vintage. Yet, the truth is, it takes countless hands – from meticulously tending the vines to precisely harvesting the grapes – to bring a single bottle of wine to fruition. The unsung heroes of this intricate process are the dedicated vineyard workers, whose mobile and often seasonal employment too frequently excludes them from eligibility for essential health insurance coverage. This critical gap leaves thousands vulnerable, highlighting an urgent and often overlooked need within one of America’s most celebrated wine regions.
The Genesis of ¡Salud!: A Community’s Vision for Healthcare Access
The story of ¡Salud! is a testament to the pioneering spirit of Oregon. In 1991, embodying the quintessential Oregonian ethos of “if it doesn’t exist, we’ll create it ourselves,” a visionary group of local winery owners recognized this profound healthcare disparity. They came together not just to acknowledge the problem, but to forge an innovative solution: ¡Salud! A unique mobile healthcare service was born, specifically designed to bridge the healthcare divide and deliver direct, accessible medical attention to thousands of vineyard workers and their families each year.

Beyond operating various fixed wellness clinics throughout the year, the cornerstone of ¡Salud!’s impact lies in its fleet of four state-of-the-art mobile healthcare trucks. These clinics on wheels are specially equipped to traverse the diverse and often challenging landscapes of the Willamette Valley, visiting dozens of vineyards to meet workers where they are. Local companies meticulously designed these newer trucks, ensuring they could navigate difficult rural terrain while housing fully functional, comprehensive medical units inside. This specialized design is crucial, enabling ¡Salud! to overcome logistical barriers and deliver high-quality care directly to the heart of Oregon’s wine country, reaching those who might otherwise go without.

The reach of ¡Salud! is extensive and deeply impactful. Each year, the program directly assists over 4,000 individuals, a significant portion of whom are children (approximately 30%) and spouses of vineyard workers (about 12%). The majority of the workers who benefit from ¡Salud!’s services hail from Mexico or Guatemala. Many face formidable language barriers, speaking limited or no English, which, coupled with the inherent complexities and often intimidating nature of the American healthcare system, makes accessing conventional medical care incredibly challenging. ¡Salud! provides not just medical treatment but a culturally sensitive, bilingual, and bicultural bridge to health and wellness, fostering trust and understanding.

¡Salud! delivers a truly empowering solution: a comfortable, casual, and highly accessible healthcare experience brought directly to the workers’ environment. The mobile units are staffed by a dedicated team of four full-time bilingual and bicultural employees. This committed staff includes two experienced registered nurses, a compassionate health educator, and an efficient administrative coordinator, all of whom play crucial roles in fostering trust and providing comprehensive support. During a recent media preview luncheon, we had the privilege of meeting Leda Garside, RN, BSN, MBA, the esteemed ¡Salud! Services Manager, whose passion for the program’s mission and impact was evident and profoundly inspiring.

Comprehensive Care On-the-Go: Services of the Mobile Units
Within the modern, well-equipped confines of each mobile unit, vineyard workers have immediate access to a wide array of essential health checks and preventative services. These include crucial screenings for conditions like high cholesterol and diabetes, comprehensive vision screenings vital for detailed work, regular blood pressure checks, and essential flu and tetanus vaccinations. Beyond these preventative measures, the program also provides invaluable information and resources on occupational health, nutrition, and mental well-being – areas particularly relevant to the physical demands and potential stresses inherent in vineyard work. This holistic approach ensures that workers receive well-rounded care that addresses both immediate medical needs and long-term health maintenance.
Should initial test results indicate the need for more specialized or advanced medical attention, ¡Salud! and its primary partner, Tuality Healthcare, facilitate seamless connections. They link workers with a robust network of esteemed partner agencies, ensuring continuity of care that extends beyond the mobile unit. This collaborative ecosystem includes vital institutions like the Oregon Health & Science University School of Dentistry, Pacific University Physical Therapy, Pacific University College of Optometry, and Project Access NOW, among others. Such comprehensive partnerships demonstrate a deep commitment to not just identifying health issues but also ensuring clear, accessible pathways to further diagnosis and treatment, thereby completing the cycle of care.
During our visit, I had the unique opportunity to experience a typical cholesterol check firsthand. The process was swift and efficient, and the nurse was exceptionally helpful, explaining my results in a clear, easy-to-understand manner. I learned that while my overall cholesterol was slightly elevated, my “good” cholesterol (HDL) levels were remarkably high – a fantastic piece of news! The nurse took the time to elaborate on why this was positive and why I had no immediate cause for concern, reinforcing the importance of a balanced diet. It was a practical demonstration of the accessible, friendly, and informative care ¡Salud! provides, proving that healthcare can be both professional and approachable. So, keep enjoying those heart-healthy foods like avocados and salmon, everyone!
My tour of the mobile unit left me profoundly impressed, not just by the physical setup, but by the sheer breadth and depth of the comprehensive services offered by the ¡Salud! program. As one can readily imagine, operating such a sophisticated and far-reaching program is no small feat. It demands intricate coordination among numerous partner agencies, a dedicated and passionate staff, and, crucially, substantial financial investment to maintain its operations and expand its reach. This is precisely where the generosity of the community, particularly through the annual ¡Salud! Wine Auction, becomes utterly indispensable.
Remarkably, all of these life-changing health services are funded entirely – 100% – through public donations and the proceeds generated from special events held throughout the year. The lion’s share of this critical funding comes directly from the main auction event held annually, underscoring its pivotal role in sustaining ¡Salud!’s mission and enabling it to continue serving thousands of essential vineyard workers and their families.
The ¡Salud! Wine Auction: A Celebration of Philanthropy and Premier Pinot Noir
Each year, the ¡Salud! Wine Auction unfolds across two distinct, yet equally impactful, events designed to raise essential funds for the program. These are: the convivial and slightly less formal ¡Salud! Cuvée Tasting and Big Board Auction, and the elegant, more formal Gala and Auction Dinner. Both events offer unique opportunities for wine lovers and philanthropists to contribute to a noble cause while experiencing the pinnacle of Oregon’s winemaking craftsmanship.
This year, an impressive contingent of 44 local wineries will proudly showcase their exclusive 2015 Cuvées. These aren’t just any wines; these exceptional Pinot Noirs are meticulously crafted specifically for ¡Salud! by participating winemakers, representing the absolute best of Oregon’s vintages and the collaborative spirit of the industry. The unparalleled exclusivity means these special bottles are available solely at these auction events – you won’t find them gracing the shelves of any store, restaurant wine list, or even in the tasting rooms of the wineries themselves. This makes the ¡Salud! Wine Auction a truly unique and highly sought-after opportunity for collectors and enthusiasts to acquire rare, high-quality Oregon Pinot Noir while directly supporting critical vineyard worker healthcare.

I recently had the distinct pleasure of sampling some past ¡Salud! Cuvée wines during a special media event hosted at the beautiful Ponzi Winery, a testament to the enduring quality and commitment of these winemakers. Among the highlights were the exquisite 2012 Winderlea Vineyard Pinot Noir ¡Salud! Cuvée and the equally impressive 2012 Trisaetum Winery Pinot Noir ¡Salud! Cuvée. These two exceptional wines were thoughtfully paired with our luncheon’s first course: a delicate Tagliatelle Pasta, richly adorned with Grana Padano cheese, vibrant snap peas, tender summer squash, and a fresh pesto. The combination was a harmonious blend of flavors, truly elevating the culinary experience and showcasing the versatility of Oregon Pinot Noir.

The presentation of the dish was as captivating as the flavors were profound – a truly beautiful creation that tasted every bit as delicious as it appeared! It was abundantly clear that immense thought and artistry went into curating both the selected wines and their accompanying gourmet cuisine, making for an unforgettable tasting.
Continuing the exceptional culinary journey, we then sampled the distinguished 2014 ROCO Winery ¡Salud! Cuvée, alongside the elegant 2010 Ponzi Vineyards Pinot Noir ¡Salud! Cuvée. We were even fortunate to meet Rollin Soles, co-owner of ROCO winery, a celebrated figure in the Oregon wine scene, further highlighting the personal connections and dedication within the Oregon wine community to this incredibly worthy cause.
These two remarkable wines were expertly paired with our luxurious main course: a perfectly prepared Carlton Farms Pork Tenderloin, accompanied by savory oven-roasted potatoes, tender swiss chard, and a rich demi-glace. The thoughtful curation of food and wine pairings throughout the luncheon showcased the incredible versatility, depth, and potential of Oregon Pinot Noir, truly making it a feast for the senses.

A heartfelt thank you goes to Thomas Ghinazzi, the visionary Culinary Director of The Dundee Bistro, for meticulously creating these delectable dishes that perfectly complemented the exquisite ¡Salud! Cuvées during our luncheon. His culinary artistry undoubtedly enhanced the entire experience, leaving a lasting impression on all attendees.
Impact in Numbers: A Legacy of Generosity and Care
The financial impact of the ¡Salud! Wine Auctions is truly inspiring, reflecting the profound generosity of the Oregon wine community and its dedicated supporters. Last year alone, these dedicated efforts successfully raised an impressive $800,000, a testament to the ongoing commitment to the program. Over its remarkable 25-year history, the auctions have collectively generated more than $11.5 million. This incredible sum, with approximately 90% of the funds coming directly from the annual auction events, forms the indispensable backbone of ¡Salud!’s operations. The remaining 10% of crucial funding is sourced from private donors and other specialized fundraising events held throughout the year, showcasing a diverse and robust support system for vineyard worker healthcare that truly embodies community spirit.
A Profound Sense of Gratitude and Inspiration
This immersive luncheon and the insightful tour of the ¡Salud! mobile units moved me in ways I had not entirely anticipated. I am consistently struck by the awe-inspiring capacity of individuals and communities to identify critical needs within their industries or local areas and then, with unwavering resolve, commit themselves to filling those voids. Twenty-five years ago, as Oregon’s wine industry was still in its nascent stages, the concept of a dedicated mobile healthcare service for vineyard workers must have seemed nothing short of revolutionary. To witness its enduring success and continued relevance today, amidst the booming wine country, is truly remarkable and speaks volumes about its foresight.
It begs the question: how many other healthcare services exist globally that are specifically tailored to serve a large, mobile population of vineyard workers with such dedication and cultural sensitivity? None that I am aware of. This uniqueness underscores the visionary leadership and compassionate spirit behind ¡Salud! I extend my deepest applause to all the wineries that actively participate in supporting this project, generously offering these vital services to their invaluable workers. Without the tireless efforts of these vineyard teams, none of Oregon’s world-renowned wines would be possible. And, of course, immense gratitude goes to all the dedicated staff and passionate volunteers involved with ¡Salud! Your commitment and tireless work make an immeasurable difference every single day in the lives of thousands.
