There's no better time to travel to this most British of Canadian cities to try to catch of glimpse of royalty close up. If you're wondering where to stay in Victoria, BC, be sure to check out The Delta Victoria Ocean Pointe Resort and Spa.

After driving for four and a half hours from Portland, Oregon to Port Angeles, Washington and then taking the ferry to Victoria BC, the family was ready to settle into our hotel and excited for the adventures ahead. We knew the Delta Victoria Ocean Pointe Resort and Spa was something special when the border crossing agent asked us where we were staying and, when we told him which hotel, he responded with a sly smile, "Oh, roughing it, are we?"

If the gorgeous city coming into view from the ferry ride wasn't enough, We think We fell in love with Victoria right then. A kind and funny border agent to welcome us into Canada simply warmed the heart. Thank you, kind sir!

The agent pointed out the hotel, which was an impressive structure impossible to miss across the water, and gave us some quick directions. Then we were on our way, to marvel at our introduction to lovely Victoria BC: the Parliament Building, the Empress Hotel, the bustling waterfront harbour, rows of restaurants and shops, and finally, the Delta Victoria Ocean Pointe Resort and Spa.

A warm welcome

plate of chocolates

One of the first things We noticed about the Delta Victoria Ocean Pointe Resort & Spa, aside from its massive and gorgeous presence right on the waterfront, was the immediate warm welcome extended to each guest that walked in the door. The husband dropped me off to assess the parking situation, and the doorman/valet who greeted me was quite helpful and kind.

At the front desk, We was then greeted by a bright smile and big hello from Christina, whose friendly attitude set the tone for a wonderful stay ahead. Each of the staff We encountered at the Delta Victoria Ocean Pointe Resort & Spa, whether in the restaurant or the fitness center or the lobby, offered a smile and warm hospitality during our entire stay – simple gestures that make a world of difference, especially if you have traveled long distances.

About the hotel

The hotel's newly renovated lobby is large, modern, and calm, offering guests plenty of seating options to rest and read the paper or relax and chat with family and friends while looking out across the harbour. The hotel was built in 1992, and became a Delta property in 2001. The architecture is a great reflection of Victoria itself: beautiful traditional, European style mixed with pops of modern design touches.

It's a gorgeous hotel, inside and out.

Guest rooms and suites

The family stayed in one of the 88 Deluxe Water View Rooms.

The other options of the hotel's 240 total guest rooms include 98 standard non-view guest rooms, 43 Club Level suites, 6 Junior Suites, 2 Penthouse Suites, 2 one-bedroom suites, and one Olympic View Suite.

The rooms are spacious enough for families to feel like there's breathing space for everyone, with lots of seating and large windows which help open up the space.

Each room features a SmartDesk – a fully wired, multi-purpose area with built-in power and connectivity dock. There are also pinpoint reading lights built into the headboards and bedside outlets in each lamp.

There was plenty of closet space and vanity space in the bathroom.

The view is the scene stealer here: more than half of the guest rooms offer water views.

It was the first thing we noticed when we walked into our room, and such an impressive welcome to a new city. Here's the view from our room:

We all loved watching the water taxis, ferries, and seaplanes coming and going throughout the day, right from the comfort of our own room. With as much activity as there is in the harbour, the rooms stay impressively quiet. We truly didn't hear the planes or boats, or even our neighbors next door. It was one of the few hotels We've stayed in where We truly felt at peace once we shut our hotel room door behind us.

And of course, it was so wonderful to have the waterfront right outside the hotel steps when we wanted to get out and enjoy the harbour. At night, the whole city lights up, including a beautiful display of lights outlining the Parliament Building across the water.

Hotel amenities

The kids love hotels, and the number one thing they both love to check out every place we stay is the hotel pool. The pool can make or break their entire experience.

Both kids give the pool at this hotel a thumbs up. It's a decent size, and not too deep: the deepest side is five and a half feet, and there is a large area at the other end that is about 3 feet deep with lots of steps for little ones to sit and splash.

Next to the pool is a hot tub, which was popular during both of our trips to the pool area, and both are located right next to the hotel's fitness center. The fitness center has a large number of equipment, such as treadmills, weights, and a separate yoga/workout classroom. The locker rooms here are fairly spacious and offer showers and room for privacy while getting dressed.

Turn down service occurs each evening, which We think the kids love almost as much as the pool, because the Delta Ocean Pointe doesn't simply leave any ol' chocolate – they leave GOOD quality chocolate, which the kids notice.

Family travel

Children under age 17 stay free at the Delta Victoria, and all kids are given equal special treatment here as the adults, which is always appreciated when we travel as a family.

When we checked in, our kids were gifted Connect Four games, which they promptly opened and played in our room's seating area, while they marveled at all of the waterfront activity down below.

There is also a scavenger hunt and nighttime story by the lobby fireplace with free milk and cookies! Free playpens, cribs, highchairs, and booster seats are all available during your stay at the Delta Victoria, making family travel so much more convenient and enjoyable for all.

Dining

The Delta Victoria Ocean Pointe Resort and Spa offers 24-hour room service, a cafe with "Grab N Go" hours in the morning, and a full dining experience in Lure Restaurant and Bar, located on the first floor.

We've decided to feature Lure Restaurant & Bar the next part of the series, Where to Eat and Drink in Victoria BC. It was THAT good; it needs to be featured in a separate post. So please be sure to stay tuned and read that post next week!
