New Orleans, a city renowned for its vibrant culture, soulful music, and unparalleled culinary scene, holds a special place in the hearts of travelers worldwide. Amidst its historic streets and lively atmosphere, a true gem shines brightly: Compère Lapin. This acclaimed restaurant in New Orleans, Louisiana, masterfully blends a trio of profound culinary influences, creating an extraordinary dining experience that captivates locals and visitors alike. Helmed by the celebrated Chef Nina Compton, Compère Lapin offers a journey through inventive dishes where Caribbean heritage meets classical French technique and the rich bounty of Louisiana ingredients.

Recently, my daughter celebrated her eleventh birthday. Eleven years old! It feels like just yesterday she was a toddler, and now she stands taller than me, brimming with an insatiable curiosity and boundless creativity. Her passions span from competitive sports to the wonders of science, but above all, she is an absolute joy to explore the world with. This past fall, we embarked on an unforgettable mother-daughter adventure, delving into the vibrant tapestry of New Orleans. Even a year later, the memories continue to inspire, offering a wealth of stories and insights from that truly remarkable trip.

A mother-daughter trip is a cherished experience, creating bonds and memories that are almost impossible to fully convey through words or even photographs. Our four-day, three-night excursion was packed with exploration, laughter, and discovery, offering an intimate glimpse into the soul of this enchanting city. Among the many incredible culinary highlights, one evening stood out vividly: our dinner at Compère Lapin. This is the realm of Chef Nina Compton, a name synonymous with innovation and excellence in the culinary world. Recognised from her standout appearance on Top Chef New Orleans and celebrated as one of Food and Wine magazine’s Best New Chefs of 2017, Chef Compton’s restaurant promised an exceptional meal, and it delivered on every front.
Compère Lapin: A Culinary Journey in New Orleans
Nestled in the heart of New Orleans, Compère Lapin is more than just a restaurant; it’s a narrative spun through flavor. The establishment’s name itself, Compère Lapin, meaning “Brother Rabbit” in French, is inspired by a mischievous rabbit character from Caribbean folktales that Chef Compton cherished during her childhood in St. Lucia. This charming connection to her roots is a foundational element of the restaurant’s identity, influencing not just its name but the very essence of its cuisine.

Chef Compton’s culinary philosophy is a fascinating fusion: her vibrant Caribbean heritage, the refined techniques of classical French training, and a profound respect for the fresh, seasonal ingredients of New Orleans. Each dish at Compère Lapin is a testament to this unique blend, inviting diners on a sensory exploration. The result is a dining experience rich with wonder, intellectual curiosity, and an undeniable inventiveness that makes every plate a masterpiece. The restaurant’s ambiance perfectly complements its cuisine – modern yet inviting, with stylish herringbone patterns contributing to a sophisticated and warm atmosphere that encourages both intimate conversations and celebratory gatherings.
Crafted Cocktails and a World-Class Wine List

Beyond the exceptional food, Compère Lapin boasts a robust and creative bar program that is a destination in itself. The cocktail menu features innovative concoctions, each thoughtfully designed and priced between $12-13. Imagine sipping on a South Island Swizzle, a delightful mix of Rhum, Manzanilla, Honey, Lime, and Coconut Water, transporting you to a tropical paradise. Or perhaps the Louisville Slugger, an intriguing blend of Bourbon, Apple Brandy, Chicory, and Smoked Vanilla, offering a smoky, complex profile that pays homage to classic Southern flavors. These aren’t just drinks; they are liquid artistry, perfectly complementing the culinary adventures awaiting you.

For wine enthusiasts, the selection at Compère Lapin is equally impressive. The extensive wine list offers a curated journey around the globe, featuring compelling options from renowned vineyards. During our visit, I began my meal with a truly lovely Côtes de Provence rosé, a perfect prelude to the evening’s delights. The thoughtful curation ensures that there is a perfect pairing for every dish, enhancing the overall dining experience and catering to a wide range of preferences and palates.
Signature Starters: From Famous Biscuits to Inventive Appetizers

Every meal at Compère Lapin commences with a culinary legend: the restaurant’s now-famous biscuits. These aren’t just any biscuits; they are warm, square, golden-brown pillows of perfection. Served alongside a generous dollop of honey butter and a luscious scoop of rich bacon butter, these bites are pure joy. Each biscuit is a masterclass in texture – buttery, incredibly flaky, and bursting with flavor. My daughter and I found ourselves utterly enchanted, and frankly, we would have been perfectly content to spend our entire evening indulging in an endless platter of these irresistible delights. They truly set the stage for the culinary journey ahead.
But alas, as glorious as the biscuits were, there was much more to explore on Compère Lapin’s inventive menu.

One particular standout among the first courses was the Crispy Cauliflower with chicken skin and buttermilk Caesar. This dish immediately struck me as incredibly inventive and somewhat unconventional. I admit, I approached it with a degree of healthy skepticism, unsure what to expect from such a unique combination of ingredients. However, with the very first bite, all doubts vanished. The cauliflower was perfectly cooked, offering a delightful crispness that contrasted beautifully with the savory, umami notes of the chicken skin and the tangy, creamy buttermilk Caesar dressing. It was a revelation, demonstrating Chef Compton’s audacious creativity and her ability to transform unexpected ingredients into harmonious, unforgettable flavors.
While the menu at Compère Lapin evolves seasonally and specials are always worth considering, one of the most consistently beloved and popular first course items is the Cold Smoked Tuna Tartare with avocado and crispy bananas. This dish is a testament to the chef’s Caribbean influences, blending fresh seafood with tropical accents. The delicate, smoky tuna pairs exquisitely with the creamy avocado and the surprising sweetness and crunch of crispy bananas, creating a symphony of textures and tastes. If you find yourself pondering an appetizer choice and the crispy cauliflower isn’t available, I wholeheartedly recommend the tuna tartare – it’s a consistent crowd-pleaser for a reason.
Main Courses: A Celebration of Freshness and Innovation

For my main entree, I opted for the special of the evening, a decision I certainly did not regret. It was truffle season (and for those in NOLA now, it still is!), and the prospect of freshly shaved truffles was simply irresistible. The dish presented was a stunning plate of potato gnocchi with English peas and shiitake mushrooms, exquisitely topped with an incredibly generous mound of truffles shaved tableside. Before diving into the details of this specific dish, it’s important to know that any pasta dish you order at Compère Lapin is house-made, crafted with meticulous care and precision, and is almost guaranteed to be nothing short of amazing. This commitment to fresh, hand-made pasta elevates every dish to a new level.
The gnocchi itself was utterly perfect – light, tender, and meltingly soft, a testament to masterful execution. And who could possibly argue with that insanely generous pile of freshly shaved truffles? Certainly not I! The earthy aroma filled the air, and each bite was a luxurious combination of delicate potato, sweet peas, savory shiitakes, and the unmistakable decadence of fresh truffles. I absolutely adored this dish, finding it to be a highlight of an already exceptional meal. It speaks volumes about the restaurant’s commitment to quality and seasonal ingredients that this particular gnocchi creation has been offered on several occasions throughout the years, always a welcome return for discerning diners.
Thoughtful Options for Younger Diners

While Compère Lapin does not feature a formal kids’ menu, the staff’s attentiveness and hospitality truly shine through. Our waitress, noticing my daughter’s somewhat adventurous but perhaps not entirely grown-up palate on this particular evening, thoughtfully offered a simple yet exquisite option: buttered noodles. And these were not just any plain old noodles; in keeping with the restaurant’s dedication to quality, they were house-made, hand-cut scialatielli. This simple dish, elevated by the superior quality of the pasta and the perfect amount of butter, was absolutely ideal for her. It reflected a deep understanding that fine dining can still accommodate and delight younger guests with elegance and care, ensuring everyone at the table enjoys their experience immensely. Truly delicious!
Plan Your Unforgettable Visit to Compère Lapin
Our dinner at Compère Lapin was an undeniable highlight of our New Orleans trip. I only wish we had found the opportunity to experience their brunch and lunch menus as well, as I’ve heard equally wonderful things about those offerings. My daughter and I were not only impressed by the innovative cuisine but also by the genuinely kind and attentive service we received throughout our visit. We both fell completely in love with the modern, herringbone-focused decor, which creates an atmosphere of chic comfort. (A small regret is wishing I could have visited during the daytime to capture even better photos of the stunning interior!). Without a doubt, we both immensely enjoyed our dishes, and I can confidently say we would return in a heartbeat, if only for an entire plate of those deliciously addictive, famous biscuits.
For an exceptional dining experience that blends diverse culinary traditions into a harmonious and inventive menu, Compère Lapin is a must-visit in New Orleans.
