While our visit in late March was slightly early for guaranteed whale sightings, the peak season generally runs from May to October. Since we visited outside the peak whale watching season, we opted for a 3-hour Wildlife Tour, eager to explore the diverse marine ecosystem surrounding Victoria.
We were pleased to discover that our tour would be conducted on a spacious, covered catamaran with a capacity of 50 passengers. This provided a comfortable and stable platform for wildlife viewing, especially compared to smaller, open-air zodiac boats, which can be more susceptible to rough seas.

While I preferred to spend most of the tour outdoors, the spacious cabin offered comfortable seating and a chance to relax in a sheltered environment. This was particularly beneficial for those who wanted to escape the wind or take a break from the elements.

One of the highlights of our wildlife tour was the opportunity to see Race Rocks Light, one of the first two lighthouses built on Canada’s west coast. This iconic structure stands as a testament to the region’s maritime heritage and offers a picturesque backdrop for wildlife viewing.

Around Race Rocks, we observed numerous California seals and Stellar sea lions lounging on the rocks. These charismatic creatures added a touch of playfulness to the already stunning scenery.
We were fortunate enough to spot several bald eagles soaring gracefully through the air, adding to the sense of wonder and natural beauty.
We also encountered countless harbor seals and sea lions basking in the sun, seemingly enjoying a life of leisure. Their presence underscored the rich biodiversity of the region.
Our tour also provided opportunities to observe a diverse array of seabirds, further enriching our understanding of the marine ecosystem.
