On a recent road trip to British Columbia, the first stop after settling into Vancouver was Big Rock Urban Brewery, a decision that proved to be a highlight of the trip.

The experience at Big Rock Brewery began with an insightful tour of the brewing facilities, providing a behind-the-scenes look at the beer-making process before settling in for dinner.

Big Rock Brewery has been a pioneer in the Canadian craft beer industry since its establishment in Alberta in 1985. The Vancouver location, Big Rock Urban Brewery, which opened in 1996, represents the company’s expansion and commitment to innovation. It stands as Canada’s largest independent craft brewer, offering a unique, multi-faceted brewing experience.

What sets the Vancouver location apart is its unique structure: it houses three breweries in one. There’s the main brewery for large-scale production, the smaller Kaspar Schulz brewery dedicated to crafting innovative and experimental beers, and the Nano Brewery, a custom-built facility for their barrel program. The Nano Brewery also offers customers the exciting opportunity to brew their own personalized beers.

Having lived in Portland, Oregon, often called the microbrew capital of the world, brewery tours are a familiar and cherished experience. These tours offer valuable insights into local ingredients and the collaborative spirit of communities working to create unique food and beverage products. A memorable moment from the Big Rock tour was when one of the children got to assist in closing the door to the cold storage keg room, an exciting experience made possible by a unique pulley system.

Brewery tours are available every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at 12 noon, 2 pm, and 4 pm. These tours last approximately 45 minutes and include beer sampling. It is highly recommended to book your tour online in advance or schedule it in person to ensure availability.

The tour options are priced at $10 per person for tours with three 4-ounce samples and $8 per person for tours without samples, providing a range of choices to suit different preferences.

Big Rock’s mission is clear: to “deliver delicious craft beer that is authentic, masterful, and audacious.” This commitment is reflected in their use of predominantly locally sourced ingredients from the Lower Mainland of British Columbia. In addition to their traditional favorites in the Signature Series, Big Rock offers a diverse range of beers, including seasonal brews, barrel-aged porters, ciders, and the nostalgic pull-tab series. The Big Rock Urban brewery location also features a Brewer’s Edition series, showcasing small-batch brews.

During a recent visit, several beers were sampled, and the standout favorite was the Citradelic Single Hop IPA. True to its name, this IPA is bursting with citrus flavors, making it an ideal beer to pair with pizza on a warm day.

Another notable beer was the Midnight Rhapsody, characterized by its roasted malts and hints of raspberry jam. This beer paired perfectly with the steak frites enjoyed for dinner.

Following the brewery tour, dinner was enjoyed in the adjacent restaurant. The ambiance is that of a classic brewpub, featuring brick walls, well-worn wood tables, dark wooden bar chairs, and soft lighting. The open layout of the space is particularly appealing, contrasting with brewpubs that use high-backed booths, which can feel more enclosed. The casual, laid-back atmosphere makes it an ideal spot for socializing with friends after work or during the weekend.

The Steak Frites ($17) was the meal of choice, featuring Newport strip steak, hop salt, and shoestring fries, accompanied by a choice of anchovy compound butter or gorgonzola crème. The steak was expertly seasoned and full of flavor, and the shoestring fries were a hit, boasting the perfect level of crispness.

The Pizza Margherita ($11), shared by a husband and son, included fresh basil, Pecorino Romano, Fior di Latte, and extra virgin olive oil. While the crust was slightly uneven, the ratio of cheese to sauce was perfect, and the fresh basil added a delightful touch.

A simple grilled cheese and fries was a hit with the youngest diner, served in a playful fry basket that added to the enjoyment of the meal. The presentation was definitely a highlight!

On future visits, the Lamb Carnita Tacos ($12) or the Ancho Pork Tacos ($13) are definitely on the list to try, as is a generous portion of their Lamb & Goat Cheese Poutine ($9). If you visit and sample other dishes, please share your thoughts and recommendations!

As the evening progressed, the atmosphere became even more jovial, marking a memorable first night in Vancouver at Big Rock Urban Brewery. The service was excellent, and the overall experience made it a highly recommended spot for enjoying craft beer and classic brewpub fare.
