Our recent three-night, four-day getaway to this beautiful part of Northern California with my husband, celebrating his birthday, was nothing short of magical. It was a special treat, allowing us to immerse ourselves fully in the county’s distinctive charm and explore its many facets.
During our visit, we indulged in an array of unforgettable experiences, from savoring exquisite wines at renowned wineries and tasting craft brews at local breweries, to exploring vibrant farms and artisan creameries. Culinary highlights included gourmet roadside restaurants that surprised and delighted, and tiny bakeries offering delectable treats. The absolutely gorgeous salad pictured above, for instance, hails from The Bewildered Pig, a remarkable restaurant whose farm-to-table philosophy and exquisite dishes deserve a dedicated feature, which I can’t wait to share with you soon.
A particular highlight of our trip was attending the annual Anderson Valley Pinot Noir Festival. This lively event not only allowed us to deepen our appreciation for some truly wonderful new wines but also provided the delightful opportunity to make new friends who shared our passion for exceptional food and drink.

- Approximately a 2-3 hour drive from San Francisco International Airport (SFO), a major international hub.
- A convenient 1-2 hour drive from Oakland International Airport (OAK), another excellent option with various domestic flights.
- Also a 1-2 hour drive from Sacramento International Airport (SMF), providing easy access from California’s capital region.
- And a mere 40-minute drive from the regional Charles M. Schulz – Sonoma County Airport (STS) in Santa Rosa, offering the quickest route directly into the heart of Northern California’s wine country.
The Santa Rosa Airport (STS), affectionately known as the Charles M. Schulz Airport, holds a special place in my heart as one of my favorite airports. Its compact size, featuring one large, integrated room for arrivals, departures, and baggage claim, makes for an incredibly efficient and stress-free travel experience. The staff at STS are consistently friendly and helpful, contributing to the airport’s welcoming atmosphere. Perhaps it’s the joy of travelers departing with cases of local wine, which flies free on Alaska Airlines, or perhaps it’s the lingering magic of Mendocino County itself that puts a smile on everyone’s faces as they pass through. Regardless, it’s an ideal gateway to your Mendocino adventure.
To fully appreciate its diverse beauty, it’s essential to understand that Mendocino County is naturally divided into two distinct, yet equally captivating, parts: the vibrant inland and the dramatic coast. We had the wonderful opportunity to spend quality time exploring both regions, and based on our experience, I highly recommend planning your stay in at least two different locations. This approach allows you to fully immerse yourself in the varied landscapes and distinct atmospheres, gaining a comprehensive understanding of this incredibly beautiful part of the state.
The Enchanting Inland: Vineyards, Farms, and Culinary Delights
Upon landing at the Santa Rosa Airport, our journey began with a picturesque drive along the winding Highway 128, a route that gracefully leads you deeper into Mendocino’s famed wine country. After several miles, we arrived in the charming town of Philo, a tranquil hub within the celebrated Anderson Valley.
In Philo, we found our delightful accommodations at The Madrones, a gorgeous and picturesque inn (as seen above) that immediately enchanted us with its rustic elegance and serene surroundings. The Madrones provided the perfect base for exploring the captivating inland towns of Philo, Boonville, and Yorkville. These communities are the heart of Mendocino’s wine region, particularly the renowned Anderson Valley, known for its cool-climate varietals, especially Pinot Noir.
The inland region is where we dedicated the majority of our time to wine tasting, immersing ourselves in the scenic beauty of the Anderson Valley’s vineyards. Each winery offered a unique experience, from intimate tasting rooms to expansive estates, all showcasing the exceptional quality of Mendocino wines. This area is also where we joyfully spent an entire afternoon at the annual Anderson Valley Pinot Noir Festival, celebrating the region’s signature grape with fellow enthusiasts. After soaking in the warmth and flavor of inland Mendocino, we journeyed westward towards the dramatic coast for the remainder of our unforgettable trip.
The Ruggedly Beautiful Coastline: Redwoods Meet the Pacific
Transitioning from the sun-drenched valleys to the invigorating coastline is an experience in itself, just as seamless as reaching the inland towns. The landscape gradually transforms: vast farms and rolling vineyards give way to dense, ancient Redwood forests, their towering canopies creating a breathtaking natural corridor. As the trees begin to thin, a distinct shift in the air occurs – that unmistakable, lovely, salty ocean breeze starts to fill your lungs. As someone from the Pacific Northwest who frequently seeks coastal escapes, I absolutely adore that moment when the scent of the sea announces its imminent presence. It’s a clear signal that the dramatic beauty of the Mendocino Coast is just around the bend.
The picturesque city of Mendocino, known for its New England-style charm and stunning bluff-top location, graces the coastline. We chose to stay nearby in Fort Bragg, a vibrant working harbor town with its own unique character. The shift in climate was noticeable and refreshing; layers came on as we embraced the cooler temperatures and invigorating ocean breezes, a stark contrast to the drier, hotter climate of inland Mendocino County. Fort Bragg provided a fantastic base for exploring the rugged coastline, from its iconic Glass Beach to its scenic Pomo Bluffs, and enjoying fresh seafood right from the fishing boats. It was a truly beautiful and tranquil spot to conclude our journey, offering a quieter, more peaceful dimension to our California adventure.
