The Suttle Lodge in Sisters, Oregon, is a charming and rustic destination for those seeking a peaceful escape, outdoor activities, and a genuine connection with nature.

One of the greatest perks of living in Portland, Oregon, is the incredible variety of experiences within easy reach. From wine country to the coast, mountains to the high desert, adventure awaits in every direction.

My family resides on the outskirts of Portland, conveniently located near the picturesque vineyards of Oregon wine country. It’s a beautiful area offering a tranquil escape from city life, with rolling hills and stunning views.

Just an hour’s drive west takes you to the Pacific Ocean and its beautiful beaches. The Oregon coast is rugged and dramatic, offering breathtaking scenery and plenty of opportunities for exploration.

To the east, within an hour’s drive, lies the majestic Columbia River Gorge, a natural wonder teeming with hiking trails and stunning waterfalls. Beyond the Gorge, you’ll find Mount Hood, providing endless possibilities for snowy adventures.

A scenic three-hour drive southeast brings you to the unique landscape of the Oregon desert. This route is filled with countless lakes, mountains, and campgrounds, including the popular Suttle Lake, located near the charming town of Sisters, Oregon.

A Closer Look at The Suttle Lodge

Located in the heart of the Deschutes National Forest on the eastern shore of Suttle Lake, The Suttle Lodge was acquired in October 2015 by Robert Sacks and David Schrott, the visionaries behind Portland’s Clyde Building, home to the renowned ACE Hotel. The Suttle Lodge underwent a significant transformation and reopened in the summer of 2016 as part of The Mighty Union hospitality group.

The lodge offers a picturesque #ThatPNWLife experience for travelers seeking a peaceful retreat from the city in a stylish and comfortable setting. While the lodge offers a serene escape, it’s worth noting that WiFi can be spotty in certain areas. The best reception can often be found near the large bay windows, making it an ideal spot to disconnect from the digital world and fully embrace the tranquility of your surroundings.

From the outside, the main building appears as a classic Oregon lodge. However, stepping inside reveals a welcoming and communal atmosphere, making you feel more like a guest in a grand house.

Similar to a home, the lodge boasts a spacious gathering area at its center, furnished with oversized, comfortable sofas and armchairs. The flexible seating arrangement allows guests to configure the space to suit their needs.

A warm fireplace graces one side of the lobby, while a charming bar and kitchen occupy the other, providing convenient access to refreshments and meals throughout your stay.

A large communal table sits near the entrance, partially enclosed by a half-wall stocked with an assortment of books, magazines, and games for guests to enjoy. This area serves as a cozy spot for socializing and unwinding.

The expansive 15.5-acre property provides ample open space for outdoor activities, making it an excellent destination for both dogs (The Suttle Lodge is pet-friendly) and their human companions.

Guests can unwind by the lake or, during warmer months, savor cold beers and refreshing slushies at the Boathouse, a popular spot for enjoying the lakeside atmosphere.

A picturesque dock extends from the Boathouse, offering a tranquil place to relax and soak up the summer sun. The dock is equally enchanting during the winter months, when it’s covered in a blanket of snow.

Accommodation Options

The main lodge features only 11 rooms, contributing to the intimate and family-like ambiance that defines The Suttle Lodge experience.

Each room boasts a unique layout and generous space, providing ample room for families and pets to relax comfortably.

The bathroom in my suite was exceptionally large, featuring three distinct areas: a spacious open room with double sinks, a large vanity, and generous closet space; a separate room with a jacuzzi tub; and a dedicated room for the toilet and shower.

The Main Lodge offers the following accommodation options:

4 Deluxe Lodge Suites: Accommodate up to 2 guests and feature a cozy fireplace.
4 Standard Guest Suites: Accommodate 2-4 guests and also include a fireplace.
2 Lofted Guest Suites: Accommodate up to 4 guests, with a queen bed on the main floor and 2 twin beds in the loft, along with a fireplace.
1 ADA-Compliant Guest Suite: Designed for up to 2 guests, featuring a fireplace and a roll-in shower for accessibility.

Cabin Retreats

In addition to the main lodge, guests can choose to stay in one of the property’s 16 cabins.

Two types of cabins are available: Lakeside Cabins and Rustic Cabins. Each option offers a distinct experience, catering to different preferences and travel styles.

The expansive Lakeside Cabins are perfect for families and groups seeking a private getaway. Each cabin has a small kitchen, bathrooms, and a fireplace, offering a comfortable home-away-from-home experience.

The cabin pictured above represents one of the four Waterfront Cabins. These cabins feature a private kitchen, fireplace, a spacious living room, bathroom, bedroom, and a loft with two beds.

There’s also the unique Pointe Historic Cabin, which can accommodate up to 6 guests and boasts a private dock on the lake, offering unparalleled access to the water.

The green Rustic Cabins provide a more basic, campground-style experience – a step up from traditional camping. Each cabin can accommodate up to six people. However, these cabins do not have bathrooms or kitchens. Guests have access to shower rooms located in a separate building near the main lodge.

Endless Recreational Opportunities

Staying within walking distance of The Suttle Lodge opens the door to various outdoor adventures. A scenic trail hugs the perimeter of the lake, starting right from the lodge.

Guests can also explore numerous hiking trails that meander through the surrounding area.

During my visit, I embarked on a beautiful 5-mile hike that led us above Suttle Lake, passing several campgrounds and smaller lakes along the way.

Scout Lake and Dark Lake are both easily accessible on foot, offering stunning and peaceful vistas along your hiking journey.

Venturing beyond walking distance unlocks even more outdoor adventures.

Hoodoo Mountain, a mere six miles away, is a delightful destination for skiing, snowboarding, and snow tubing, ideal for families seeking a fun and intimate winter experience.

I also recommend taking a short 20-minute drive to the charming town of Sisters, Oregon. This town offers unique shops and restaurants. It’s a perfect destination for a half-day trip while staying at the lodge!

Culinary Delights

While staying at The Suttle Lodge, guests can enjoy breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks in the main lodge. The Boathouse offers seasonal menus depending on the weather.

The menus at the main lodge and the Boathouse are the creation of Portland chef Joshua McFadden, who helms one of my favorite restaurants in town – Ava Genes – and is partner of the hospitality group that runs another one of my favorite Portland restaurants, Tusk.

The culinary experience at The Suttle Lodge is worthy of its own separate blog post. From farm-to-table dishes to innovative cocktails, the lodge offers a delightful gastronomic adventure.

I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at The Suttle Lodge. It was a genuine retreat into nature, surrounded by like-minded travelers seeking the same peaceful experience with their friends and families.

My room in the main lodge was incredibly spacious, warm, and inviting. I loved the communal space, where I could relax with a book by the fire or engage in a board game with other guests, all while sipping on a tasty cocktail.

I witnessed children and dogs happily spending time away from screens, returning from exciting outdoor escapades. The resort staff was friendly and welcoming.

I eagerly anticipate returning with my entire family during the summer months!
