Having savored a wide array of Washington wines over the years, I can confidently attest to the superior quality and distinctive character of those originating from the Red Mountain AVA. The tour continued through the intricate handling and pressing operations, where we witnessed firsthand the initial stages of winemaking. These subterranean chambers, cool and dimly lit, felt like ancient cathedrals dedicated to wine. It’s no exaggeration to say I could happily reside within those caves, surrounded by such beauty and the promise of endless, exquisite wine. The experience was truly enchanting. 2005 Terra Blanca Reserve Syrah ($63): Perhaps it was the magical ambiance of the barrel caves, but the 2005 Terra Blanca Block 8 Reserve Syrah utterly captivated me from the very first sip. This luscious dark fruity wine boasts incredible depth and complexity. Rich hints of dark plum, succulent fig, and wild huckleberry dance on the palate, culminating in a truly delicious and memorable experience. It’s a wine that speaks volumes about the quality of Syrah from Red Mountain.
2009 ONYX ($55): Without a doubt, the 2009 ONYX was a unanimous favorite among our group throughout the entire weekend. This signature Bordeaux blend, crafted by Keith Pilgrim himself, showcases an amazing depth of flavor. Each sip reveals waves of decadent dark chocolate, ripe marionberry, and elegant cassis, creating a harmonious and powerful profile. It’s a testament to the artistry of blending and the superb quality of grapes from the estate.
2008 Signature Series Cabernet Sauvignon ($45) and the 2008 Signature Series Merlot ($40): Both of these wines from the Signature Series captivated us with their intriguing layers and elegant complexity. The Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot each offered nuanced notes of bright cherry, rich black fruits, a hint of clove, luscious plum, and beautifully integrated, soft tannins. These wines exemplify Terra Blanca’s ability to produce varietals that are both approachable and deeply satisfying.
My generous auction package truly exceeded expectations, featuring this beautiful set of four magnums: a robust 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon, a smooth 2008 Arch Terrace Merlot ($25), and two bottles of the expressive 2009 Arch Terrace Syrahs.
