Oregon Wine Month Tasting Events Guide on UrbanBlissLife.com

May proudly marks Oregon Wine Month – a dedicated period celebrating the exceptional talent, delicious diversity, and thriving spirit of my home state’s wine industry. This isn’t just a month; it’s a statewide invitation to explore, taste, and appreciate the craftsmanship behind Oregon’s world-renowned wines.

As a passionate advocate for Oregon wines, I’ve had the pleasure of immersing myself in many of these unique experiences. You might have followed some of my recent Oregon Wine Adventures on Instagram, or perhaps read my recent feature for Travel Oregon, highlighting the unparalleled beauty and bounty of our wine regions. My journey through Oregon’s wine landscape is a continuous discovery, and May offers an extraordinary opportunity for everyone to join in this delightful exploration.

While the sheer volume of incredible special tastings, insightful tours, and exciting events throughout the state during Oregon Wine Month makes it impossible to list every single one, the Oregon Wine Board serves as the official hub for comprehensive details. However, to offer you a more personal and intimate glimpse into what awaits, this guide provides a detailed review of how I kicked off the first week of Oregon Wine Month, complete with practical wine tasting tips and invaluable suggestions for making the most of your own vinicultural adventures.

Discovering Gems at Collaborative Tasting Events

Pour-Oregon-Cheers-Crowd

One of the most efficient and enjoyable ways to sample a diverse array of Oregon wines without the logistical challenge of traveling across multiple vineyards is to attend one of the many collaborative events held during Oregon Wine Month. These gatherings, often bringing together dozens of wineries under one roof, offer a fantastic opportunity to revisit cherished old favorites and, more excitingly, stumble upon new wineries that are sure to capture your heart and palate. The vibrant atmosphere, coupled with the sheer variety, makes these events a highlight of the month for both seasoned connoisseurs and curious newcomers alike.

Pour Oregon: A Showcase of Boutique Excellence

Pour-Oregon-Red

The inaugural Pour Oregon event, masterfully presented by Cellar 503, served as an exhilarating kickoff to Oregon Wine Month. More than just a tasting, this event also played a crucial role in supporting a noble cause, raising vital funds for Make-A-Wish Oregon. It was an inspiring display of the wine community’s generosity.

The event itself was a magnificent showcase of 40 boutique wineries, each representing the unique terroir and innovative spirit found throughout the state. The thoughtful organization of the tasting room, meticulously arranged by wine regions, allowed attendees to effortlessly navigate the diverse offerings and visualize the geographical origins of each exquisite pour. This regional layout not only made for a more structured tasting experience but also deepened the appreciation for Oregon’s distinct AVAs.

  • Revisited Old Favorites: It was a pleasure to reconnect with wines from Fullerton Wines, known for their elegant Pinot Noirs, Keeler Estate, celebrated for their biodynamic practices, and Maysara Winery, always delivering exceptional quality.
  • Exciting New Discoveries: My palate was particularly captivated by Analemma wines, a true revelation offering unique expressions that stand out in Oregon’s competitive landscape. Their distinct approach to winemaking promises an intriguing future for this rising star.

Taste Dundee: A Celebration of Willamette Valley Elegance

Another spectacular collaborative event was Taste Dundee, an immersive experience held in the heart of the renowned Dundee Hills. Here, I savored the nuanced offerings from 25 distinguished Willamette Valley wineries, each pouring samples of their finest vintages. The event was further enhanced by an array of delightful light bites, perfectly complementing the wines, and a backdrop of live music that added to the festive and sophisticated ambiance.

Among the many wonderful wines, one old favorite, Angela Estate, reaffirmed its status as a consistently stunning producer. Their Pinot Noir remains a benchmark for elegance and complexity, a testament to the exceptional terroir of the Dundee Hills (for more insights, read about Angela Estate). A truly exciting new discovery at Taste Dundee was Methven Vineyards and their remarkable 2014 Pinot Noir. Its captivating profile prompted my friend and me to jointly purchase a half case, eagerly anticipating sharing this exquisite find with others and relishing it at home. It’s these moments of discovery that make wine month so special.

Taste Dundee also impressed with some of the most memorable culinary offerings I’ve encountered at collaborative wine events this year. The importance of excellent food—and plenty of it—at wine tastings cannot be overstated; it truly elevates the entire experience. Notable favorites included the perfectly crafted mini roast beef from Red Hills Market, bursting with savory flavors, and the tender, flavorful pulled pork from Babica Hen, both expertly paired to enhance the wine experience. These delicious bites underscored the strong culinary scene that complements Oregon’s wine industry.

Savoring Oregon’s Best with Restaurant Wine Flights

Raven-and-Rose-Wine-Flight

Given the abundance of outstanding wines produced in our state, it’s no surprise that many Oregon restaurants boast truly exceptional wine lists, featuring a deep selection of local varietals. During Oregon Wine Month in May, many of these “A-List Restaurants”—establishments specifically recognized for their top-tier Oregon wine selections—go above and beyond by offering exclusive, specially curated wine flights. These flights provide an excellent opportunity to experience a vertical or horizontal tasting of Oregon’s finest, often accompanied by expert commentary from sommeliers in a sophisticated culinary setting.

Raven-and-Rose-Wine-Salads

A prime example of such an esteemed “A-List Restaurant” is Raven and Rose, a culinary gem known for its rustic elegance and commitment to local ingredients. Throughout May, they are presenting a remarkable white wine flight that showcases the diversity and quality of Oregon’s white wine production. This particular flight featured:

  • The bright and expressive 2015 Goodfellow Family Cellars Chardonnay from the McMinnville AVA, offering crisp acidity and nuanced fruit.
  • The richly textured 2013 Bergström Wines Old Stones Chardonnay from the broader Willamette Valley AVA, a testament to the region’s ability to produce complex and age-worthy Chardonnays.
  • A unique 2014 Smockshop Band Winery blend, comprising 98% Chardonnay and 2% Pinot Gris, sourced from the expansive Columbia Valley AVA, providing an intriguing and aromatic profile.

Each wine in the flight was a masterclass in regional characteristics, offering a delightful journey for the palate. The inviting ambiance of Raven and Rose, combined with such thoughtfully assembled flights, truly enhances the appreciation of Oregon wines. Keep an eye out for a full restaurant review of Raven and Rose coming in the near future!

Immersive Winery Tastings & Tours: Experience the Source

Of course, May provides an absolutely perfect window to venture directly to the source—the wineries themselves—for unparalleled wine tastings and captivating tours. This is where you connect directly with the winemakers, walk amongst the vines, and truly understand the passion and effort that goes into every bottle.

Hawks-View-Cellars-Vines-Bud-Break-Growing-Spring

The timing couldn’t be more picturesque. Most wineries across the state have recently experienced bud break, that magical period when the new vintages begin their journey, with tiny, delicate buds emerging that will eventually mature into fruit-bearing vines. This means that as you visit, you’ll be treated to the stunning sight of nascent flowers and vigorous new growth painting the vineyards in vibrant shades of green. It’s an incredibly beautiful and dynamic time to be in Oregon wine country, offering a fresh perspective on the annual cycle of winemaking and the breathtaking landscapes that define our regions.

To further entice visitors, many Oregon wineries are rolling out special offers and unique experiences in their tasting rooms throughout Oregon Wine Month. If you’re exploring the South Willamette Valley and Eugene area, a wonderfully interactive way to delve into the local wine scene is through Pinot Bingo! Simply visit PinotBingo.org to find a comprehensive list of participating wineries, grab an official Pinot Bingo card, and collect stamps with each winery visit to earn exciting rewards. It’s a fantastic game that encourages exploration and discovery.

For those eager to delve deeper into specific AVAs, consider acquiring a Passion for Ribbon Ridge passport. This exclusive passport, along with a special Ribbon Ridge AVA Pinot Noir logo glass, grants you access to tastings at 11 participating wineries every weekday in May (excluding Memorial Day), offering a focused and intimate exploration of this renowned sub-region. Additionally, mention Oregon Wine Month at any participating Eugene Urban Wine Circuit winery to enjoy a special 2-for-1 wine tasting flight, making it even easier to sample the diverse urban offerings. Beyond these structured programs, many wineries are also opening their doors for rare library tastings and barrel openings, providing a unique glimpse into future vintages and aged treasures.

J. Scott Cellars stands out as one of Eugene’s most dynamic urban wineries, making a significant impact with its philosophy of producing a remarkably large number of varietals in small, artisanal batches. This approach allows them to experiment and offer an incredibly diverse portfolio, which I absolutely adore. Their Tempranillo is widely popular for excellent reason, showcasing robust fruit and elegant structure. Beyond that, their Albarino is a personal favorite, perfectly crisp and refreshing for summer sipping. The excitement continues with their recent release of a Vermentino, a varietal I had never before encountered from an Oregon winery, promising a unique and adventurous tasting experience. This commitment to variety and quality in small lots truly distinguishes J. Scott Cellars. I’m thrilled to be preparing a full, detailed write-up on J. Essential Tips for Your Oregon Wine Month Adventures

As someone who regularly writes about wine, lives within Oregon’s beautiful wine country, and attends numerous wine tastings and events each month, I’ve gathered invaluable insights to help ensure your Oregon Wine Month experiences are not only fun but also incredibly rewarding. Follow these tips to maximize your enjoyment and discovery:

  • Plan Ahead Thoroughly. Before embarking on your wine journey, dedicate time to research. Consult winery and restaurant websites, as well as their social media channels, for the most current information. Look specifically for special tastings, guided tours, curated flights, and unique events. Be aware that some wineries may have adjusted hours or be closed for private events on certain days, so confirming details beforehand can save you disappointment.
  • Arrange Transportation Safely and Smartly. Responsible enjoyment is paramount. If you’re planning to visit multiple wineries, it’s highly advisable to arrange transportation in advance. Gather a group of friends and pool your resources to hire a dedicated wine country bus or car service, allowing everyone to relax and indulge without worry. Alternatively, designate a responsible driver for the day. My friends and I often rotate designated driver duties, ensuring no one person is consistently stuck playing “Wine Tour Mom or Dad.”
  • Stay Hydrated and Well-Fed. Wine tasting, especially over several hours, requires proper nourishment and hydration. I always recommend packing a cooler filled with essentials: plenty of water bottles, palate-cleansing crackers, nuts for sustained energy, savory jerky or salami, a little chocolate for a treat, and protein bars or cookies. During tastings, make it a habit to drink a full glass of water for every full glass of wine consumed. This helps maintain hydration, keeps your palate fresh, and ensures a more enjoyable experience overall.
  • Embrace the Spit Bucket. For newcomers, using a spit bucket might feel unusual, but it’s a truly valuable habit to cultivate during a professional tasting. By spitting out wine between samples, you’re better able to truly discern and appreciate the unique essence, aromas, and flavors of each individual wine. This technique helps prevent palate fatigue and the dreaded “all these wines are starting to taste the same” problem, allowing you to clearly remember which wines genuinely impressed you. You can then confidently purchase bottles of your favorites to safely enjoy at home.
  • Plan to Purchase Wine. The most meaningful way to show your appreciation and support to the tasting room staff and the winery itself is to purchase a bottle or two (or more!) of the wines you particularly enjoyed during your tasting. While some tasting rooms may have tip jars or accept personal tips, a wine purchase directly contributes to the winery’s success and is always the most welcome gesture of gratitude.
  • Consider Joining the Wine Club. If you find yourself truly enamored with a particular winery—its wines, its philosophy, and its people—seriously consider joining their wine club. Wine club memberships offer a wealth of rewards that vary by winery, but typically include a certain percentage off all purchases, exclusive invitations to private club-only events, discounts on public events, early access to new releases, and sometimes even complimentary tastings. It’s a fantastic way to deepen your connection with a winery you love and enjoy ongoing benefits.
