Sometimes, the soul simply craves a refreshing escape. This past summer, a friend and I decided to answer that call, embarking on a delightful mid-week girls’ getaway. Our destination? Silverton, Oregon, a charming town located just about an hour south of bustling Portland, home to a true Pacific Northwest gem: The Oregon Garden.
Our relaxing retreat was made even more special by our stay at the exquisite Oregon Garden Resort. Perfectly situated, the resort boasts breathtaking views overlooking the expansive 80-acre botanical paradise that is The Oregon Garden. It offered an idyllic base from which to explore the natural wonders awaiting us.
The Oregon Garden: An Unforgettable Botanical Escape

Spanning 80 acres in the heart of Silverton, this stunning botanical wonder invites visitors to immerse themselves in a diverse collection of more than 20 specialty gardens, each with its own unique theme and charm. It’s more than just a garden; it’s an experience, a journey through meticulously curated landscapes designed to delight and inspire.

Whether you have a morning or an entire afternoon to spare, wandering through the interconnected gardens is an absolute joy. This serene haven is primarily designed for self-guided exploration, allowing you to set your own pace and linger wherever beauty captures your eye. Each garden offers a unique sensory experience, from the fragrance of blooming flowers to the rustle of leaves in the gentle breeze. It’s a place where every corner turned reveals a new vista, a fresh perspective, and an opportunity for quiet contemplation.

For those visiting Silverton from further afield, the Oregon Garden Resort, which opened its doors in 2008, provides an unparalleled lodging experience. Conveniently located adjacent to the gardens, it offers guests exclusive access and breathtaking views, making it an ideal choice for an extended stay. Gorgeous Color Year-Round: Silverton, Oregon Blooms
One of the most remarkable aspects of The Oregon Garden is its commitment to providing breathtaking beauty throughout all four seasons. The dedicated horticulture staff works tirelessly, meticulously planning and planting to ensure a continuous display of stunning flora, no matter when you visit. While each season brings its own distinct charm, the mid-summer months, when we visited, are particularly abundant with a riot of colors and fragrant blooms.
During our trip, the garden was alive with an incredible variety of flowers, painting the landscape with vivid hues. It was a true spectacle, showcasing the talent and passion of the gardeners. Here’s a glimpse at some of the magnificent flowers that were flourishing during our mid-summer exploration:

Silverton Market Garden: A Celebration of Oregon Agriculture
Among the more than 20 captivating specialty gardens at The Oregon Garden, the Silverton Market Garden stands out as a vibrant tribute to Oregon’s rich agricultural heritage. This dynamic garden provides a unique opportunity to witness firsthand the cultivation of many of the state’s 147 diverse agricultural products. Here, you can explore thriving beds of berries, observe fields dedicated to grass seed production, and even marvel at the hops climbing trellises, all integral to Oregon’s economy and culinary scene.

Beyond its educational value, the Silverton Market Garden offers a delightful, interactive experience. Visitors will be charmed by the resident egg-laying chickens, freely roaming and adding a touch of rustic authenticity to the setting. It’s a wonderful reminder of the connection between garden and table, and the importance of sustainable agriculture. This garden also hosts the Oregon Garden Information Booth, a convenient spot to ask questions and learn more about the garden’s mission and offerings.

Children’s Garden: Where Imagination Blooms

The Children’s Garden at The Oregon Garden is a true wonderland, designed to spark joy and curiosity in visitors of all ages. It’s a place where imagination runs wild, offering a myriad of engaging activities for kids and a delightful experience for accompanying adults. Children can unleash their inner paleontologist in the expansive sand pit, digging for hidden dinosaur bones, or step into a storybook by exploring an enchanting hobbit house. The miniature train garden mesmerizes with its intricate details, while the adorable, larger-than-life shrub sculptures, expertly shaped into fun animals and characters, provide perfect photo opportunities and inspire creative play. This vibrant space ensures that even the youngest guests find their own special connection to nature and gardening.
A-mazing Water Garden: Beauty Meets Sustainability

The A-mazing Water Garden is a testament to the harmonious blend of natural beauty and environmental stewardship. This tranquil area features a series of interconnected water features that not only create a serene atmosphere but also serve a vital ecological purpose. Designed to combine wildlife habitat with an innovative treated wastewater recycling system, it showcases how stunning landscapes can coexist with sustainable practices. Visitors can enjoy the calming sounds of flowing water, observe various aquatic plants, and potentially spot local wildlife, all while appreciating a cutting-edge approach to water management. It’s an educational and aesthetically pleasing journey into the world of eco-conscious gardening.
Northwest Garden: The Essence of the Pacific Northwest
As one of The Oregon Garden’s inaugural gardens, the Northwest Garden holds a special place, celebrating the unique flora and arboreal wonders that thrive in the Pacific Northwest region. This garden is a living showcase of resilience and natural beauty, featuring a carefully curated collection of native plants and trees perfectly adapted to the climate. Walking through this section, you gain a deeper appreciation for the indigenous species that define Oregon’s breathtaking landscapes, from towering evergreens to delicate ferns and vibrant flowering shrubs. It’s a wonderful opportunity to learn about and connect with the local ecosystem. Here’s a closer look at some of my personal favorites, highlighting the diverse and captivating plant life:

Bosque: A Serene Central Plaza
Nestled near the very heart of The Oregon Garden, you’ll discover the Bosque, a uniquely designed plaza that offers a captivating blend of architectural symmetry and natural beauty. This peaceful space is distinguished by a collection of 40 meticulously arranged planter boxes, each featuring a single, elegant Pacific Northwest Maple tree. The Bosque creates a sense of calm and order, inviting visitors to slow down and appreciate the subtle beauty of these iconic regional trees.

As the day draws to a close, the Bosque transforms into an especially magical setting. The still water surfaces create stunning reflections, particularly enchanting at sunset when the vibrant colors of the sky are mirrored in the tranquil pond, offering a breathtaking visual spectacle. It’s an ideal spot for photography, quiet contemplation, or simply soaking in the tranquil ambiance.

Special Events and Seasonal Magic at The Oregon Garden
The Oregon Garden is much more than just a collection of beautiful plants; it’s a dynamic community hub that hosts an impressive array of public and private events throughout the year. Whether you’re seeking cultural enrichment, family fun, or a unique celebration, The Oregon Garden’s special events add another layer of allure to this already captivating destination. Keep an eye on their schedule to plan your visit around a memorable occasion.

When to Visit: Experience The Oregon Garden’s Transformative Beauty
While The Oregon Garden enchants at any time of day or year, there’s a particular magic that unfolds as the sun begins its descent. If your schedule allows, I wholeheartedly recommend timing your visit, or attending an event, around sunset. As the golden hour bathes the landscape in soft, warm light, the garden undergoes a breathtaking transformation. The colors become richer, the shadows lengthen, and a serene, almost ethereal glow settles over the entire botanical wonderland. It truly is an experience that stays with you, offering unparalleled beauty and photographic opportunities.

During our own visit, the sunset was so captivating that it was hard to tear our eyes away from the ever-changing canvas painted across the sky and reflected in the garden’s features. That said, we also explored the garden mid-day, and it was equally enchanting, vibrant with sunlight and bustling with life. The truth is, there’s no wrong time to visit The Oregon Garden.
