Get ready to uncork, savor, and celebrate! The 8th Annual Seattle Wine and Food Experience (SWFE) invites you to indulge in an unparalleled culinary journey on February 20 – 21, 2016. This highly anticipated event promises an unforgettable weekend filled with exquisite tastes, fine wines, craft beverages, and the vibrant spirit of Seattle’s thriving food scene.

As an avid explorer of gastronomic delights, I’ve always found that one of the most enriching ways to truly immerse oneself in a city’s culinary culture is through its local food and beverage festivals. These vibrant gatherings provide a unique opportunity to sample the diverse offerings of dozens, or even hundreds, of local purveyors and artisans, all conveniently gathered under one roof. It’s a sensory adventure, allowing you to discover new flavors, meet passionate creators, and experience the very essence of a region’s culinary identity.
While my heart holds a special place for some of the incredible food and beverage festivals in Portland, Oregon – I’m looking at you, Feast Portland, TOAST, and Wild About Game – I’m eagerly anticipating a road trip up north in just a few weeks. My destination? The highly acclaimed Seattle Wine and Food Experience (SWFE), a premier event that showcases the very best of the Pacific Northwest’s epicurean talents. It’s more than just a tasting; it’s an immersive celebration of flavor, craftsmanship, and community.

The SWFE weekend is thoughtfully structured around two spectacular main events, each offering a distinct and equally captivating experience for attendees. Kicking off the festivities is the 2nd Annual Pop! Bubbles and Seafood event on Saturday, February 20th, promising an effervescent journey for the palate. Following this, the weekend culminates with the highly anticipated 8th Annual Grand Tasting event on Sunday, February 21st, which provides an expansive showcase of culinary and beverage excellence. (Detailed ticket information can be found at the conclusion of this article).
Throughout this incredible weekend, attendees will have the unparalleled opportunity to engage with and enjoy the masterful creations of more than 50 of the region’s most talented chefs, innovative mixologists, skilled distillers, passionate cider and brew masters, and esteemed winemakers. Imagine the possibilities: if you’re up to the delightful challenge, you could find yourself sampling hundreds of exquisite dishes, ranging from savory bites to decadent desserts, and exploring a vast selection of up to 500 different wines from around the globe. It’s an epicurean marathon designed for those who truly appreciate the finer things in life.
Pop! Bubbles and Seafood: An Effervescent Affair

Prepare for an evening of pure effervescence at the 2nd Annual Pop! Bubbles and Seafood event. This dazzling affair is a dream come true for lovers of sparkling wines and fresh, delectable seafood. Guests will have the chance to taste more than 40 different sparkling wines, representing the finest bubbles from around the world. This impressive selection includes prestigious French Champagne, zesty Spanish Cava, light and refreshing Italian Prosecco, elegant Alsatian Cremant, and many other exquisite varieties.
The true magic of Pop! lies in its meticulously curated pairings. Throughout the evening, you’ll have the delightful opportunity to pair these diverse sparkling wines with delectable culinary creations crafted by 16 of Seattle’s most celebrated and innovative chefs. Each dish is expertly designed to complement and enhance the nuanced flavors of the various sparkling wines, offering a truly harmonious and unforgettable tasting experience. From delicate oysters to rich crustaceans, the seafood offerings promise to elevate every sip.

I recently had the pleasure of sampling the Piper-Heidsieck Brut – a fantastic sparkling wine that will be featured prominently at the event! Its crisp, elegant notes paired absolutely deliciously with a Poached Wild Alaskan Turbot I prepared, served alongside Sauteéd Tomatoes and Peas. This creation was designed specifically for Wild Alaska Seafood, highlighting the versatility and exquisite flavor profile of fresh, sustainable catches. The recipe for this delightful dish will be shared on the blog this Friday, so stay tuned for your chance to recreate a taste of the SWFE experience at home.
A Grand Celebration of Global Cuisine
Beyond the bubbles, the Seattle Wine and Food Experience is a robust celebration of culinary artistry, designed to tantalize every palate and complement the impressive beverage selection. To ensure you can fully savor all the amazing wines, craft beers, ciders, and spirits available at SWFE, a truly remarkable array of food will be on offer. You’ll be able to savor the incredible creations from 25 of Seattle’s most accomplished chefs and renowned culinary programs, showcasing the innovative spirit and diverse talent within the city’s gastronomic scene.
Adding to this impressive lineup are another 25 specialty food purveyors, each representing a global range of cuisines and offering unique, artisanal products. This curated selection ensures that every attendee can embark on a culinary journey, discovering everything from local Pacific Northwest specialties to international flavors. I’m personally excited to sample dishes such as the invigorating Kickin’ Wild Alaska Salmon and organic potato prawn cake drizzled with basil citrus vinaigrette from the talented Chef Bill Ranniger at Duke’s Chowder House. Another must-try on my list is the comforting yet sophisticated Potato gnocchi with cream and white truffle oil, bacon parmesan, a signature creation from Chef Lisa Nakamura of Gnocchi Bar. These examples merely scratch the surface of the gastronomic wonders awaiting you.

For seafood enthusiasts, there’s an additional treat in store: the chance to meet acclaimed cookbook author Cynthia Nims. Her latest literary masterpiece, the OYSTERS cookbook, is not only visually stunning but also an invaluable resource for anyone looking to master the art of cooking with oysters. It’s packed with excellent tips for preparation, understanding different oyster varieties, and, of course, a collection of mouthwatering recipes that celebrate this cherished bivalve. Meeting Cynthia provides a fantastic opportunity to gain insights directly from an expert and explore the delicious world of oysters in even greater depth.

Tim’s Celebrates 30 Years: A Crunchy Milestone

You guys, I absolutely adore Tim’s chips. If you haven’t had the pleasure, you’re missing out on some truly exceptional crunch! These Washington-based chips are renowned for their incredible crispiness, satisfying crunch, and irresistible flavors that have garnered a loyal following across the Northwest and beyond. To commemorate the company’s significant 30th anniversary, Tim’s has released some truly fun and innovative Special Batch flavors, including a particularly intriguing Coney Island variety.
A “Coney Island” chip, you might ask? It certainly sparks curiosity! While some of my friends initially guessed a hot dog flavor (and thankfully, I can’t quite imagine a hot dog-flavored chip being universally appealing…), this special batch is inspired by what typically adorns those classic hot dogs. The Coney Island chips boast a uniquely balanced flavor profile: a delightful blend of slight sweetness perfectly complemented by a distinctive mustard tang. I found them surprisingly addictive, and my son quickly became a fan as well! It’s a testament to Tim’s creativity in crafting memorable snack experiences.
The truly exciting news for SWFE attendees is the rare opportunity to meet Tim Kennedy, the visionary founder of Tim’s chips himself! He has graciously carved out an hour to greet his fans, sign limited edition bags of Tim’s Cascade chips, making for a truly special memento. Moreover, attendees will have the chance to enter a fantastic contest: a drawing to win a coveted one-year supply of Tim’s chips. It’s an unparalleled chance to celebrate a local legend and stock up on your favorite crunchy snack.
Maximize Your Experience: Essential Food Event Tips

Whether this is your inaugural Seattle Wine and Food Experience or you’re a seasoned festival-goer, navigating a large-scale event like SWFE can be overwhelming. Drawing from my many years of covering food and wine festivals, I’ve compiled some essential tips to help you make the most of your day, ensure you enjoy every moment, and leave feeling satisfied and energized:
- Prioritize Hydration: This cannot be overstated. Make sure to drink plenty of water before the event to start well-hydrated. Continue to drink water consistently in between samples – not only to stay hydrated, but also to effectively cleanse your palate, allowing you to fully appreciate each new taste. And, crucially, rehydrate thoroughly after the event. Good news for SWFE attendees: there will be an abundance of San Pellegrino and Acqua Panna available to keep you refreshed throughout the day!
- Strategic Planning is Key: Large festivals can be incredibly exciting but also daunting. Too many times, I’ve left an event only to realize I missed seeing or tasting something I had truly wanted to experience. To avoid this common pitfall, take some time to review the vendor list and event map ahead of time. Develop a simple, written plan of attack. Even a quick checklist on your phone detailing your must-try foods, wines, and must-visit vendors can make a huge difference in maximizing your experience and ensuring you hit all your personal highlights.
- Engage Respectfully, Don’t Monopolize: Festivals are wonderful opportunities to interact with the passionate chefs, brewmasters, and winemakers. However, remember that many other attendees also wish to connect with them and sample the same delectable offerings. Be courteous and considerate: wait your turn patiently (no pushing your way to the front!), take your sample, offer a polite smile, ask a quick, focused question or two, gather any printed information, and then gracefully move on. This allows others to also have their moment and keeps the lines flowing smoothly for everyone.
- Pacing is Paramount: You Don’t Need to Try Everything! It’s a common temptation at food festivals to feel compelled to sample every single item you encounter. However, for the sake of your palate and your stomach, it’s perfectly okay to say no to some offerings. If you’re tasting wine, it’s also perfectly acceptable to take just a sip instead of an entire taste, and please, DO use the provided spit buckets. They are there for a reason! Remind yourself throughout the day that mindful tasting, rather than relentless consumption, will lead to a far more enjoyable and memorable experience, preventing palate fatigue and an upset stomach.
- Keep Moving: Walk it Off! Comfort is key at these events. Wear comfortable shoes – this is definitely not the time to channel your inner Carrie Bradshaw in stilettos. Instead of finding a spot and sitting while sampling, try to stay on your feet and keep moving between stations. If you start to feel particularly sluggish from all the delicious food and drink, take a deliberate opportunity to do a quick lap or two around the venue. Those extra steps will not only help with digestion but also keep you energized and alert. Trust me: you’ll feel significantly better and more refreshed after the event if you incorporate some movement.
