Remedy Wine Bar: A Portland Gem for Wine Lovers (Review)
Are you a wine enthusiast looking for the perfect spot in Portland, Oregon, to unwind and indulge in exquisite flavors? Look no further than Remedy Wine Bar, a neighborhood gem that offers an impressive selection of wines, thoughtfully crafted food pairings, and a warm, inviting atmosphere. Whether you’re planning a romantic date night or a casual gathering with friends, Remedy Wine Bar provides an unforgettable experience for every palate.
The question “Are your spouses also into wine?” often sparks interesting conversations among food and wine writers. Fortunately, I can answer with an enthusiastic “Yes!” My partner and I share a deep appreciation for food, wine, and craft beer. This shared passion has been a cornerstone of our relationship, dating back to our college days when we would seek out culinary adventures, regardless of our student budgets. From memorable meals at La Famiglia in Boston’s North End to our regular spot at Paparazzi, and even the unforgettable flambéd langostinos during our honeymoon in Portugal, food and drink have always played a significant role in our lives.
Therefore, when we have the opportunity to explore new culinary destinations together, it’s always a special occasion. I value my partner’s company, but I also appreciate his discerning palate and unique taste preferences. Recently, we were invited to experience a delightful food and wine pairing at Remedy Wine Bar in Northwest Portland, and it was an evening to remember.

A Neighborhood Wine Bar with a Cozy Vibe
Remedy Wine Bar is the epitome of a neighborhood wine bar that every community deserves. The space is thoughtfully designed, offering ample room for conversation without feeling overcrowded. The ambiance strikes the perfect balance between spacious and intimate, creating a comfortable and relaxed setting. Whether you prefer dressing up or keeping it casual, Remedy Wine Bar welcomes all styles.

One of the standout features of Remedy Wine Bar is its diverse seating options. You can choose from high-top tables perfect for groups, comfortable seating at the bar, or cozy leather armchairs and couches for a more relaxed experience. This variety allows you to tailor your visit to your specific preferences and group size.
Exquisite Food and Wine Pairings
Upon our arrival, we were warmly greeted by General Manager Josh Wiesenfeld, who has been an integral part of Remedy Wine Bar since its inception. His passion for wine and dedication to providing exceptional service were evident throughout the evening.
We began our culinary journey with a refreshing Rosé paired with a delightful cheese plate.

The cheese plate at Remedy Wine Bar is always a winning choice. You can select from a single cheese for $7, three for $18, or five for $29. The cheese selections are carefully curated and frequently updated, ensuring a delightful surprise with each visit. The presentation is always artful, showcasing the quality and craftsmanship of the cheeses. On this particular occasion, the plate included a Toma Della Roca sheep’s cheese accompanied by Hood River peaches and black pepper, a harmonious blend of flavors that perfectly complemented the Rosé.

Next, we savored a guinea hen salad paired with a Burgundy Sauvignon. It’s a common misconception that Burgundy primarily produces red wines. In reality, over 60% of Burgundy’s wine production is white wine. The Clotilde Davenne Sauvignon from the Saint-Bris area was crisp and refreshing, boasting prominent notes of fresh apple and pear. This wine would be an excellent choice to enjoy at home with a roast chicken salad.

Following the salad, we indulged in a hearty vegetable and sausage medley paired with a 2004 Patrick Jasmin Côte Rôtie from Rhone, France.

The Côte Rôtie was a smooth, medium-bodied red wine that harmonized beautifully with the rich textures and complex flavors of the dish. The pairing showcased the expertise of Remedy Wine Bar in selecting wines that enhance the dining experience.

To conclude the evening, we savored an intensely rich chocolate brownie-like tart paired with a luscious Port wine. The 1983 Kopke Porto Colheita consistently receives high praise from Wine Spectator and Wine Enthusiast, earning scores of 90+. With its rich caramel aroma and flavors of toffee, walnuts, and a maple finish, this classic Port retails for around $50-75 per half bottle, depending on the vintage. It was the perfect ending to a memorable meal.
Discovering a New Favorite Wine

While each of the pairings was thoughtfully executed and well-balanced, the wine that truly captivated my partner and me was the 2013 Joan d’anguera Altaroses. This certified biodynamic and organic wine is aged for 12 months in old oak barrels and fermented in concrete vats using indigenous yeasts. The result is a delicious medium-bodied red wine with sweet strawberry flavors, soft tannins, and a hint of spice in the finish. Best of all, it retails for around $20, making it an accessible and delightful choice.
An Extensive Wine Selection
Remedy Wine Bar boasts an impressive and constantly evolving selection of over 100 wines. What sets Remedy apart is that almost all of these wines are available by the glass, allowing you to explore a wide range of varietals and vintages without committing to an entire bottle.
One of the key factors that enables Remedy Wine Bar to offer such a diverse selection by the glass is their use of the Coravin system. The Coravin is a revolutionary wine technology gadget that allows you to pour wine without removing the cork, preserving the wine’s freshness and preventing oxidation. The system works by inserting a needle through the cork and injecting argon gas to protect the wine. This innovative approach ensures that every glass of wine is as fresh and flavorful as the first. It’s surprising that more wine bars and restaurants don’t utilize this technology, as it significantly enhances the customer experience.

Remedy Wine Bar’s commitment to using the Coravin system aligns perfectly with their adventurous spirit and dedication to providing a unique and memorable experience for their patrons. It reflects their passion for wine and their desire to share that passion with others.
