Janken, strategically located in Portland’s vibrant Pearl District, redefines Asian fine dining with its ambitious menu. The culinary focus is on harmonizing Japanese and Korean flavors, resulting in a dining experience that is both innovative and deeply satisfying.

The extensive menu is a testament to the restaurant’s commitment to quality and variety. For those seeking heartier fare, Janken offers a selection of premium steaks, succulent lamb, and expertly prepared duck dishes.

To fully appreciate the breadth of Janken’s culinary offerings, we recommend selecting at least five smaller dishes or a pair of entrees for a table of two. This allows you to sample a variety of flavors and textures, ensuring a truly memorable dining experience.

Beyond its exceptional cuisine, Janken also boasts an imaginative cocktail menu. While the cocktails are somewhat pricey, their artistry and unique flavor profiles make them a worthwhile indulgence.

A Refined Dining Experience in Northwest Portland

While the exceptional cuisine is undoubtedly a primary draw, the atmosphere at Janken is equally captivating. The restaurant exudes a bustling energy, with an interior design that seamlessly blends minimalist aesthetics with natural elements. A prominent feature of the dining room is a magnificent artificial cherry blossom tree, which adds a touch of whimsical elegance to the space.

Occupying the former Bluehour space on NW 13th Ave., Janken successfully delivers a fine dining experience that is both refined and approachable. The service staff is exceptionally warm and friendly, contributing to the restaurant’s welcoming atmosphere.

As a fine dining establishment, Janken’s prices reflect the quality of its ingredients and the expertise of its culinary team. Patrons should be prepared for higher prices on certain menu items, such as the elaborate Surf and Turf. Additionally, a 20% service charge is automatically added to each bill in lieu of a traditional tip.

🍹 Signature Cocktails and Wine Selection

Janken’s cocktail menu is a testament to the creativity and skill of its mixologists. The menu features an eclectic array of drinks designed to tantalize both the eyes and the taste buds. We opted for the Pineapple Express ($21) and the Alchemist ($20), each offering a unique and memorable drinking experience.

The Pineapple Express and Alchemist cocktails are visual and gustatory delights.

The Pineapple Express, a captivating blend of mezcal, cointreau, and grilled pineapple, is served with a dramatic flourish. Upon presentation, the waiter removes a cloche, releasing a cloud of smoke that adds an element of theatricality to the drink.

The Alchemist, crafted with gin, yellow chartreuse, and shiso syrup, offers a more subtle and nuanced flavor profile. Its pleasant umami notes make it a refreshing and intriguing choice.

For those who prefer wine, Janken offers a curated selection of wines by the glass and a limited selection of bottles, ensuring that there is a perfect pairing for every palate.

🍽 Upscale Pan-Asian Cuisine: A Culinary Journey

The dishes at Janken encompass a wide spectrum of flavors and textures, ranging from delicate and light to rich and indulgent. Many of the dishes are served in smaller portions, making them ideal for sharing and sampling a variety of culinary creations.

Cold Starter: A Refreshing Beginning

We commenced our culinary journey with the Kanpachi Crudo ($16), a light and refreshing dish featuring thinly sliced kanpachi fish, compressed watermelon, nuoc cham vinaigrette, and fresh herbs. The combination of cool, sweet, and savory elements made it a perfect palate cleanser.

Appetizers and Specialties: Exquisite Bites

Following the crudo, we sampled the salmon tacos ($15), generously topped with avocado and roe, and the maguro (bluefin tuna) foie gras ($24), adorned with shaved truffle. The maguro was exceptionally rich and succulent, and both dishes were perfectly portioned for sharing.

The next course featured the hamachi crispy rice ($19), a delightful interplay of crunchy and soft textures and umami flavors, and the steak tartare ($27), accompanied by braised mushrooms and truffle aioli. While the tartare is typically served with milk bread toast, the kitchen thoughtfully substituted crispy rice to accommodate dietary restrictions.

Succulent Seafood: A Taste of the Ocean

The culinary exploration continued with the crispy soft-shell crab ($19), nestled within pillowy soft steamed buns, and the perfectly seared scallops ($17), which were remarkably tender and buttery.

Veggies: A Vegetarian Delight

The penultimate savory course featured the charred broccolini ($14), dressed with in-house made barley miso. While this dish could serve as a delightful starter or a component of a shared meal, its richness may be overwhelming later in the dining experience.

Entree: The Grand Finale

The final savory course before dessert was the show-stopping surf and turf. It featured half a Maine lobster with shiso ponzu butter and spices, alongside a melt-in-your-mouth wagyu steak. While we were captivated by the deeply rich and tender steak, the lobster felt somewhat overseasoned and underwhelming, struggling to hold its own against the wagyu.

🍨 Dessert: A Sweet Conclusion

Janken boasts an impressively diverse selection of desserts, catering to a wide range of palates. Our selection included a vibrant assortment of sorbets ($13), including delectable strawberry, mango, and Asian pear flavors. We also sampled the creamy and light crème brûlée ($16) and the decadent dark chocolate meltdown cake ($19), a lava cake that oozed with rich chocolatey goodness.
