Montréal truly is a food lover’s playground, offering an incredible array of culinary delights around every corner.

My initial exploration of this dynamic city, the largest in Canada’s Quebec province, was as part of a TBEX conference FAM trip. During that visit, I instantly fell head over heels for Montreal’s electrifying energy and its exceptionally delicious food scene.

From those iconic smoked meat sandwiches that are piled high and bursting with flavor, and those irresistibly buttery bagels fresh from a wood-fired oven, to charming French bistros tucked away on quiet streets, innovative food trucks serving up exciting creations, and arguably the best poutine you’ll ever encounter – this city consistently delivers flavor in every single bite.

Whether you find yourself sipping natural wine in the trendy Mile End neighborhood, savoring exquisitely prepared foie gras at a sophisticated fine dining establishment, or devouring a perfectly crafted maple-glazed donut from a local, hidden-gem bakery, Montréal seamlessly blends classic French flair with a distinctive creative cool that you simply won’t find anywhere else.

My advice? Come hungry, and prepare to leave utterly obsessed!

Montreal has rightfully earned its place as one of North America’s most exciting and dynamic food cities. It’s effortlessly cool, brimming with creativity, and absolutely packed with flavor. You’ll find culinary inspiration at every turn.

From those classic, comforting French bistros to late-night poutine joints that cater to every craving, this city knows exactly how to eat – and eat well. Each neighborhood boasts its own unique vibe, its own distinct character, and of course, its own must-try dishes that define its culinary landscape.

While Montreal is famously known for its signature dishes such as poutine, smoked meats, and those distinctive Montreal-style bagels, this bustling metropolis is also constantly forging new global culinary pathways with incredibly inventive Middle Eastern, Italian, Asian, Latin American, African, and fusion cuisine.

And with an abundance of fertile farmland located in the surrounding areas, the city is also a vibrant hotbed of farm-to-table dining experiences, with a strong emphasis placed on showcasing local, seasonal ingredients that are allowed to truly shine.

Here’s a detailed look at some of the very best eats in Montreal that I had the pleasure of experiencing during my visit.

Have you ever had the pleasure of tasting a truly authentic Montreal-style bagel? These bagels are distinctly different from their New York counterparts. They are generally smaller, noticeably denser, and have a touch of sweetness that sets them apart. And, most importantly, they are always baked in a traditional wood-fired oven, which imparts a unique smoky flavor and perfectly crisp texture.

The tradition of Montreal bagels was brought to the city by Jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe in the early 1900s. Over time, these bagels became a beloved and integral staple of Montreal’s vibrant breakfast culture.

These delightfully soft and slightly chewy bagels are meticulously hand-rolled and then boiled in honey-sweetened water before being baked to perfection. While there are many variations available, the most traditional bagel to order is a plain one, generously covered in either sesame or poppy seeds.

When it comes to experiencing the best Montreal bagels, the two top contenders are Fairmount Bagel (est. 1919) and St-Viateur (since 1957), both conveniently located in the charming Mile End neighborhood. There is an ongoing, passionate debate among locals and visitors alike about which establishment truly reigns supreme.

During my visit to Montreal, I only had enough time to savor the bagels at St-Viateur. However, I can confidently say that they were truly some of the very best bagels I have ever had the pleasure of eating! The perfect balance of sweetness, chewiness, and smoky flavor made them an unforgettable culinary experience.

Montreal smoked meat is often described as a close cousin of pastrami. It is made from beef brisket that is meticulously dry-cured with a blend of aromatic spices, then carefully smoked and steamed until it reaches a state of irresistible tenderness that simply melts in your mouth.

And when it comes to experiencing the absolute best Montreal smoked meat, THE place to order it is without a doubt at Schwartz’s Deli. Schwartz’s is more than just a deli; it’s an iconic institution, a hot and bustling establishment where the smoked meat is sliced thickly and served with a no-frills attitude. Order it on rye bread with a generous slathering of mustard. You won’t have any regrets.

Opened back in 1928 by Romanian-Jewish immigrant Reuben Schwartz, this classic deli has become world-famous for its bold, unforgettable flavor and its unpretentious, no-frills setting. Be prepared to encounter long lines – but trust me, it’s absolutely worth the wait to experience this true Montreal culinary gem!
