Discovering the Loire Valley: The Garden of France
The Loire Valley, often hailed as the “Garden of France,” is a captivating region brimming with enchanting landscapes, majestic châteaux, world-class cuisine and wine, and a rich cultural heritage.
Stretching over 170 miles along the Loire River, this idyllic region is celebrated for its undulating vineyards, charming historic villages, and exquisite gardens. The Loire Valley is a feast for the senses and a journey back in time.
With over 300 castles dotting the landscape, the Loire Valley boasts the highest concentration of castles in all of France. Among these architectural marvels are iconic structures such as Château de Chambord, a testament to the region’s rich history and royal connections.
For wine enthusiasts, the Loire Valley is a true paradise. The region produces exceptional wines, including renowned varieties like Sancerre, Cabernet Franc, and Vouvray. During our visit, we savored the opportunity to partake in wine tastings at several local wineries. Alain will be sharing those experiences in a dedicated post soon!

Chateau de Valcreuse: A Glimpse into History and Luxury
Château de Valcreuse, a magnificent 19th-century château, is ideally situated in the serene countryside surrounding La Roche-Posay, France.
Constructed around 1850 as an opulent family residence, the château has carefully preserved its historic allure, showcasing an elegant stone façade, charming turrets, and a sprawling estate. A bell and plaque mark the location of a bombing during World War II, a somber reminder of the castle’s past.
Over the years, the château has transformed from a private residence into a luxurious guesthouse. The current owners, Catherine and Mark, have lovingly maintained the castle, providing guests with a peaceful and rejuvenating retreat.
Exploring the Castle: Old-World Charm Meets Modern Comforts
Stepping inside Chateau de Valcreuse, you’ll discover a seamless blend of old-world charm and modern amenities, creating an atmosphere of refined comfort.
A grand staircase in the foyer leads to the exquisite suites on the upper floors. Adjacent to the staircase, you’ll find a game room featuring a pool/snooker table and a spacious living room. The bar is conveniently located off the living room, connecting to the elegant dining room.
The expansive chef’s kitchen is fully equipped with everything you need for your stay and is perfectly prepped for catered events.
The large wine cellar, located in the basement, quickly became one of my favorite rooms in the house, offering a delightful glimpse into the world of French wines.
Perhaps my favorite space of all was the formal dining room. Gathering around a table for 14 beneath a stunning chandelier created a memorable and intimate dining experience.
Indulge in Luxurious Comfort: The Suites
The main château houses seven spacious suites, each uniquely designed with distinct layouts, furnishings, and amenities, perfect for couples seeking a romantic getaway.
Each suite features either a king-size bed or a queen-size bed, with the exception of the Innocence suite on the top floor, which offers a twin bed and a double bed, ideal for families or small groups.
Every suite boasts its own private bathroom, some with luxurious bathtubs, others with walk-in showers, ensuring a comfortable and private experience.
Our suite, Intuition, along with Spntaneite, even had small private balconies, offering stunning views of the surrounding countryside.
Exploring the Grounds: A Haven of Tranquility
Chateau de Valcreuse is situated on a sprawling estate covering just over 17 acres (7 hectares) of land on the edge of La Roche-Posay, bordering the tranquil Creuse River.
The well-manicured lawn, refreshing pool, and convenient pool bar create the perfect setting for lounging and soaking up the warm French sunshine.
Near the pool, you’ll discover a charming gazebo, a delightful tree swing, and a traditional petanque court, offering a variety of recreational options.
The grounds also feature enchanting orchards brimming with pears, apples, plums, apricots, and other delicious fruits, inviting you to savor the bounty of the French countryside.
Adding to the estate’s unique charm is a truffle oak garden, a testament to the region’s culinary heritage.
A Culinary Journey: Savoring the Flavors of France
At Château de Valcreuse, you have access to a fully equipped chef’s kitchen, giving you the option to prepare your own meals. Additionally, you can enhance your culinary experience by hiring a private chef, available for an additional cost starting at around 75€ per person per meal.
During our stay, we were treated to three exquisite gourmet dinners prepared by the talented Chef Cesare Bonacoscia, creating unforgettable culinary memories.
We also enjoyed incredible charcuterie boards and a delightful dinner of beef bourguignon, red wine risotto, and ratatouille, prepared by our gracious hosts, Sandy and Lori.
Don’t forget to indulge in the array of delicious French pastries and fresh fruits available at the local bakeries and markets in La Roche-Posay. Every morning was a delightful culinary adventure!
The Chateau’s Vineyard: A Taste of Loire Valley Wine
At the edge of the lawn, beyond the petanque court and pool, lie the Château vineyards, planted with wide rows of Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. This scenic spot is perfect for a leisurely stroll and offers a glimpse into the region’s winemaking heritage.

Getting To and From Chateau de Valcreuse: Transportation Options
La Roche-Posay is located approximately a 3-hour drive south of Paris. While staying at the Château, you can opt for a convenient transportation service from Paris.
Pricing varies depending on the time of year and the number of passengers. For a roundtrip for two in the fall, the cost is approximately 1600€.
By Car
The most straightforward way to reach Château de Valcreuse is by car. The drive from Paris to La Roche-Posay takes about 3 hours (around 320 km). Take the A10 motorway towards Poitiers, then follow the signs to La Roche-Posay. This scenic route allows for flexibility and the opportunity to explore the French countryside along the way.
By Train
Alternatively, you can take a train from Paris (Gare Montparnasse or Gare d’Austerlitz) to the nearest major train station, which is Châtellerault. The journey takes around 1.5 to 2 hours by high-speed TGV. From Châtellerault, you can take a taxi or rent a car for the remaining 25 km (about 25 minutes) to Château de Valcreuse in La Roche-Posay.

I highly recommend renting a car during your stay at Château de Valcreuse. We rented a car from Avis.
The office is located in Chatellerault, which is an easy 20-minute drive from the Château.

The entire château can be rented for private events such as weddings or corporate retreats, as well as for week-long stays, providing an exclusive and unforgettable experience.
