🌟 Why This Homemade Blueberry Dog Treat Recipe Works

Ace, a black lab, outside enjoying a blueberry dog treat.
These treats are easy to make, wholesome, and perfect for freezing.

There are countless reasons why these delightful homemade dog treats stand out as a fantastic choice for your canine companion:

  • Effortlessly Simple: This recipe is designed with ease in mind, featuring clear, step-by-step instructions. Even novice bakers will find the process enjoyable and stress-free. We’ve included plenty of photos to guide you through each stage, ensuring a successful batch every time.
  • Wholesome Ingredients You Trust: One of the biggest advantages of making your own dog treats is complete control over what goes into them. This recipe calls for simple, natural ingredients like fresh blueberries and healthy oats, allowing you to avoid artificial flavors, colors, or preservatives often found in commercial treats. You’ll have peace of mind knowing you’re providing your dog with only the best.
  • Generous Yield: This recipe produces approximately 28 medium-sized dog treats when using a standard dog bone cookie cutter. This quantity is ideal for larger breeds, like our black lab, Ace. However, you can easily adjust the yield by using smaller cookie cutters, making it perfect for small dogs or for offering tiny training rewards to dogs of all sizes.
  • Freezer-Friendly Convenience: Life gets busy, which is why we love recipes that offer make-ahead options. These blueberry dog treats can be frozen, allowing you to bake a large batch and store half for later. Simply thaw as needed for a quick and easy snack anytime.
  • Customizable for Your Pup: While delicious as written, this recipe also offers room for safe variations to suit your dog’s preferences or dietary needs. Considerations for different flours or even adding a touch of dog-safe peanut butter can make these truly unique to your best friend.
  • Economical Choice: Making treats at home is often more cost-effective than repeatedly purchasing premium store-bought options. This recipe uses pantry staples, offering a budget-friendly way to pamper your pet.

🐾 The Power of Blueberries and Oats for Dogs

Beyond being delicious, the core ingredients in these treats offer fantastic health benefits for your dog:

  • Blueberries: These small but mighty berries are packed with antioxidants, which can help fight cell damage and support a healthy immune system. They are also a good source of vitamins C and K, and fiber, promoting healthy digestion. Their natural sweetness means no added sugar is needed, making them an ideal healthy snack.
  • Oats: Old-fashioned oats provide dietary fiber, aiding in digestive health and maintaining stable blood sugar levels. They are also a good source of B vitamins and linoleic acid, an omega-6 fatty acid, which promotes healthy skin and a shiny coat. Using whole oats and processing them at home adds a pleasant texture and ensures maximum nutrient retention.

🛒 Ingredient Notes for Perfect Blueberry Dog Treats

Ingredients for blueberry dog treats laid out: flour, oats, flaxseed, coconut oil, water, and blueberries.
Simple, wholesome ingredients for treats your dog will love.

Crafting homemade dog treats means you know exactly what your beloved pet is consuming. This recipe relies on readily available, wholesome ingredients from your local grocery store.

  • All-Purpose Flour: We recommend using all-purpose flour as the base for these treats. You’ll need extra flour for dusting your work surface to prevent sticking when rolling out the dough. If you’re considering alternatives like whole wheat flour or rice flour, be aware that you might need to adjust the liquid measurements slightly to achieve the right dough consistency. Different flours absorb liquid differently, so add water gradually. We’d love to hear your experiences if you experiment with other flours!
  • Old-Fashioned Oats: Our preference is to process old-fashioned oats ourselves, as this yields a texture that our dog Ace particularly enjoys, adding a slight crunch. While oat flour can be used as a substitute (simply add it directly without processing), it will result in a smoother, less textured treat. Both methods are perfectly safe and delicious.
  • Ground Flaxseed: This ingredient serves a dual purpose in our recipe. It acts as an excellent egg substitute, helping to bind all the ingredients together, which is crucial for a cohesive dough. Furthermore, ground flaxseed provides an extra boost of nutritional value, including omega-3 fatty acids and fiber, supporting your dog’s overall health.
  • Blueberries: You can use either fresh or frozen blueberries for these treats. If opting for frozen berries, there’s no need to thaw them beforehand; simply add them straight from the freezer to the mixture. This convenience makes it easy to whip up a batch anytime the craving strikes.
  • Coconut Oil: It’s important to measure the coconut oil first while it’s in its solid state, then gently melt it in the microwave. Allow the melted oil to cool to room temperature before incorporating it into the other ingredients. Adding hot oil could affect the dough’s texture or other ingredients. Coconut oil contributes to the treats’ texture and also offers potential benefits for skin and coat health.
  • Water: The water content is key to achieving the perfect dough consistency. Start by adding a little less water than the recipe specifies, then gradually incorporate more as needed. You’re looking for a dough that begins to form a ball in the food processor without being overly sticky. The exact amount can vary slightly depending on your flour type and the humidity in your environment.

✅ Step-by-Step Instructions: Baking Homemade Blueberry Dog Treats

Get ready to bake a batch of homemade goodness! While the full ingredient list and detailed instructions are in the printable recipe card below, this visual guide will walk you through the process, step by step.

First things first, preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line two baking sheets with parchment paper to prevent sticking and ensure even baking, then set them aside. This preparation makes for a smoother baking process.

Step 1: Oats in a food processor.
Step 2: Oats processed to fine crumbles.
Step 3: Flour and flaxseed added to processed oats.
  1. In the bowl of your food processor, add the old-fashioned oats. Pulse until they transform into fine crumbles, resembling oat flour in size and texture. This step ensures a smooth dough and helps the treats bind effectively. (Refer to the recipe notes if you are using pre-made oat flour.)
  2. Next, add the all-purpose flour and ground flaxseed to the food processor. Pulse these ingredients together until they are thoroughly blended and no streaks of dry flour remain, which typically takes about 30 seconds.
  3. Pour in the melted and cooled coconut oil. Pulse briefly to incorporate the oil into the dry mixture. Then, add the water, starting with a slightly smaller amount than specified, and pulse just until the ingredients begin to come together and form a cohesive dough. You want the dough to be firm enough to handle but not overly sticky.
Step 4: Blueberries added to the dough in the food processor.
Step 5: Dough with blueberries forming a ball.
Step 6: Dough rolled out on a floured surface.
  1. Finally, add the fresh or frozen blueberries to the food processor. Pulse just until the blueberries are incorporated and the dough begins to gather into a ball, typically around 30 seconds. Be careful not to overmix, as this can make the dough tough. Once combined, carefully remove the bowl from the food processor and detach the blade.
  2. Lightly dust a clean countertop or any large, flat, clean surface with a small amount of flour. Turn the dough out onto this surface and gently shape it into a ball with your hands.
  3. Using a rolling pin, roll out the dough evenly until it reaches a thickness of approximately ¼ inch to ⅙ inch. Consistency in thickness helps ensure even baking.
Step 7: Using a dog-themed cookie cutter on the rolled-out dough.
Step 8: Cut-out dog treats placed on a baking sheet.
Baked blueberry dog treats cooling on a baking tray.
  1. Now for the fun part! Use your favorite dog-themed cookie cutters to cut out shapes from the rolled dough. Carefully transfer the cut-out treats onto your prepared baking sheets, ensuring you leave approximately one inch of space between each treat to allow for air circulation during baking. Gather any leftover dough scraps, re-roll them on your floured surface, and continue cutting out shapes until all the dough is used up.
  2. Bake in your preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 22-28 minutes. Keep a close eye on them; you want the edges to be slightly golden brown and the centers to be thoroughly cooked through. The exact baking time can vary slightly depending on your oven and the thickness of your treats.
  3. Once baked, remove the treats from the oven and transfer them to a wire rack. Allow them to cool completely at room temperature before offering them to your eager pup or storing them. This cooling step helps them firm up and ensures they are safe to eat.

Additionally, blueberries are packed with fiber, aiding in healthy digestion, and contain essential vitamins like C and K. They make a fantastic, healthy snack for both dogs and their human companions.

What’s the best way to store these homemade dog treats?

To maintain their freshness and crunch, store these blueberry treats in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3-5 days. For longer storage, you can keep them in the refrigerator for up to one week. Always ensure they are completely cooled before storing to prevent condensation, which can lead to sogginess or mold.

Can I freeze these blueberry dog treats?

Yes, these treats are wonderfully freezer-friendly! Once they have cooled completely, you can place them in a single layer in a freezer-safe bag or container. If you need to stack them, place a sheet of parchment paper between layers to prevent them from sticking together. They can be frozen for up to two to three months. When you’re ready to serve, simply thaw them at room temperature for a few minutes.

Storage: Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days or in the refrigerator for up to one week. If you want to store them for longer than that, you can place in a freezer bag or other freezer-safe container for up to 3 months.
