While my “Travel Bliss: Visit Western Montana” series continues next week, covering everything from the best eateries and drink spots in Missoula to family-friendly activities in Missoula, and even where to eat and drink in Boise, ID, I simply couldn’t wait to share my most recent adrenaline-fueled journey. My trip to the magnificent Fraser Valley, British Columbia, Canada, left me utterly breathless, and I’m still riding the incredible high from what was, without a doubt, one of the top five experiences of my entire life. What was this life-changing event? I went paragliding over the breathtaking Fraser Valley!

Discover the Charm of Fraser Valley, BC

The Fraser Valley is a jewel nestled just an hour’s drive east of Vancouver, British Columbia, making it an accessible escape for both locals and tourists. This captivating region is primarily composed of three vibrant towns: Langley, Chilliwack, and Abbotsford. It presents a serene yet expansive landscape, characterized by vast cornfields stretching towards the horizon, framed by towering, majestic mountains that dominate the skyline, and bisected by the seemingly endless Fraser River, a vital artery that winds its way throughout the valley.

While the Fraser Valley boasts an abundance of outdoor experiences, from hiking and cycling to river adventures, I can now attest first-hand that the true magic and grandeur of this stunning Canadian landscape are best appreciated from an entirely unique vantage point. There’s nothing quite like gliding gracefully through the crisp air, thousands of feet above the ground, during a tandem paragliding adventure with the highly acclaimed Jet Set Paragliding. From this elevated perspective, the patchwork of farms, the meandering river, and the imposing peaks coalesce into an unforgettable panorama, making it clear why an aerial view is the ultimate way to capture the soul of the Fraser Valley.

Experience Thrills with Jet Set Paragliding

Jet Set Paragliding, conveniently located less than two hours from Vancouver in Chilliwack, BC—a town famously known for its delicious corn, a topic I look forward to exploring in a future post—stands as a beacon for adventure seekers. This esteemed operation is passionately owned and expertly run by Martina Lang, a name synonymous with excellence in the paragliding world. Martina is not just an experienced pilot; she is the reigning 2013 Canadian National Female Champion in paragliding, a testament to her skill and dedication.

Her journey into the skies began with skydiving in 1997, but her true calling led her to establish Jet Set Paragliding in 2010. Since then, Martina has been gracefully soaring over the majestic Fraser Valley, sharing this incredible experience with countless happy visitors. Her extensive background, competitive accolades, and genuine love for flight ensure that every tandem paragliding adventure is not only thrilling but also incredibly safe and deeply memorable. With Martina, you’re not just flying; you’re learning from one of the best, guided by a true master of the air.

On a recent, unforgettable day, I had the privilege of being one of those lucky visitors, embarking on an adventure that would redefine my understanding of thrill and beauty. Before this, my experience with extreme sports or activities involving significant heights was limited. I had never attempted paragliding, skydiving, or bungee jumping. The closest I had come to such an aerial escapade was ziplining down Hawaii’s longest tandem zipline, an experience that, while exhilarating, paled in comparison to the boundless freedom of paragliding.

Yet, when this incredible opportunity presented itself, there was absolutely no hesitation. I knew instantly that I couldn’t pass it up. And I’m thrilled to report that the experience didn’t just meet my expectations; it far exceeded them, creating a profound sense of joy and accomplishment that is unmistakably etched across my face in the photograph below. It was an adventure that transcended mere thrill, offering a serene yet powerful connection to the vastness of the natural world.

The Mechanics of Flight: How Paragliding Works

The journey to the skies begins with a meeting at a designated base location, where you’re introduced to Martina and the team. From there, the adventure truly kicks off as Martina expertly navigates us up Mount Woodside. The ascent itself is an experience, taking us along a mildly treacherous, steep, and completely unpaved, rocky “road.” Many people ask if I felt scared during any part of the paragliding experience, and I can honestly say, not once during the flight itself. If there was any moment that could be considered “scary,” it was probably this exhilarating drive up the mountain. However, Martina’s profound expertise in maneuvering her robust mountain vehicle up the challenging incline is immediately reassuring, demonstrating her mastery even before we leave the ground.

Upon reaching the summit, we arrive at a relatively flat landing area meticulously designated as a take-off spot for both paragliders and hang gliders. Here, Martina begins the meticulous process of setting up the equipment. With practiced ease, she deftly unfurls the vast paraglider wing, inspects all lines, and then carefully hooks you into your tandem seat pack. Throughout this preparation, she provides a thorough and reassuring walk-through of all safety details and instructions. Essentially, you’ll be seated comfortably in a large, cushioned seat, securely strapped to your expert tandem guide. Martina ensures you understand how each part of the harness and equipment is connected, a transparency that was one of the many aspects that instilled immense confidence in me.

To further prepare you for the launch, Martina likes to conduct a trial take-off run on the ground. This exercise allows you to get a feel for what will be required during the actual launch. While it sounds simple, the take-off run, requiring you to run downhill with the wind catching the canopy, is often harder than it sounds. Fortunately, it’s also the shortest, most crucial part of the paragliding process, swiftly transitioning into the effortless glide.

And then, with all preparations complete, you and your guide stand together at the very edge of the mountain, poised for flight. This moment of anticipation, this quiet wait, is truly the hardest part. The air hums with unspoken excitement, the vast landscape spreading out below, waiting to be explored from above.

During this critical waiting period, Martina meticulously monitors two key wind markers: one positioned to the left of the take-off spot, and another several yards directly below the edge. She patiently explained that the wind conditions need to be just right, picking up simultaneously at both the bottom and top markers. This dual assessment ensures that the conditions are optimal for a safe and successful take-off, allowing us to effectively catch the wind and launch into our flight. Her attention to detail underscores the absolute priority given to safety.

Then, once every condition aligns perfectly, Martina’s voice rings out—filled with an excited and wonderfully encouraging tone—”1, 2, 3, GO! Run, run, run!” And with that exhilarating command, you begin your sprint directly off the mountain top, committing fully to the thrilling leap into the open air.

That, folks, is truly ME in that image. RUNNING OFF THE TOP OF A MOUNTAIN. I DID THAT! It’s an incredible realization, executing such a daring feat with another person, an intricate network of strings, and a massive cloth wing strapped securely to me. And the most empowering part of it all is knowing that YOU, too, are absolutely capable of experiencing this profound adventure. For me, there wasn’t a single moment of fear. Not even a shred. I loved, loved, LOVED every exhilarating second of it, from the rapid run to the moment of lift-off.

However, if the prospect does ignite some apprehension within you, please know that it is perfectly normal and entirely okay. Martina is incredibly adept at working with a diverse range of individuals, from those who possess no fear whatsoever to those who approach the experience with a hesitant “I’m not sure I can do this” level of trepidation. If anyone can truly put your mind at ease and guide you confidently through this monumental step, it is Martina. Her calm demeanor and extensive experience are designed to transform apprehension into pure exhilaration.

And then, just like that, the world shifts. You’re no longer running, no longer struggling against gravity. Instead, you’re effortlessly gliding gracefully through the vast expanse of the air, soaring with magnificent ease over the utterly gorgeous Fraser Valley. The transition is seamless, from earthbound anticipation to the sublime freedom of flight.

Essential Tips for Your First Paragliding Adventure

  1. Wear shoes that have a good grip. The importance of proper footwear for your paragliding experience cannot be overstated. While many choose running shoes, ensure they offer excellent traction. A good grip is absolutely critical for the take-off run, allowing you to push off the ground safely and effectively. I personally wore my Keens, which provided superior grip and were also water-friendly, perfectly complementing my afternoon sturgeon fishing adventure (more on that exciting experience coming soon!).
  2. Dress in layers. Even if the day on the ground feels warm, remember that you will be at a significantly higher elevation on the mountain, where temperatures can be cooler, and the wind can be surprisingly strong and biting. Dressing in layers allows you to adapt to changing conditions, ensuring you remain comfortable throughout your entire experience, from the ascent to the flight itself.
  3. Don’t forget sunscreen. Although the actual flight typically lasts around 15 minutes, you are exposed to intensified sun rays at higher altitudes. The sun’s UV radiation is stronger at elevation, making you more prone to sunburn. Therefore, always apply a generous amount of high-SPF sunscreen to any exposed skin before you begin your adventure.
  4. It’s all about trust. From the moment I met Martina, I placed 100% complete trust in her expertise and guidance. I never felt afraid, not even for a single second. She excels at clearly describing what to expect without overwhelming you with excessive information, striking the perfect balance between informativeness and reassurance. Her approach makes the experience incredibly fun, almost like spending a day out with a trusted friend. If you harbor any hesitation about trusting your guide, communicate your feelings openly; a good guide will always prioritize your comfort and confidence.
  5. Bring your camera AND buy the GoPro video and still shots. While you can certainly bring a camera with a secure strap to capture photos during your paragliding flight, I highly recommend investing in the professionally captured GoPro video and still shots offered by Jet Set Paragliding. Martina typically sets up one or two GoPro cameras to record the entire, exhilarating experience. Having this professional footage is incredibly worthwhile; it allows you to relive the magic and share it with others, preserving every incredible moment in dynamic video.
  6. Sit back, relax, and enjoy the show. This is your moment. Paragliding offers you arguably the best seat in the house, a panoramic view of the world that few ever get to witness. Once you’re airborne, let go of any lingering tension, lean back into your harness, and simply allow yourself to be immersed in the incredible ride. Soak up the breathtaking views, feel the wind on your face, and cherish every second of this unique aerial ballet.
  7. Know that there is always a chance you won’t paraglide that day. Paragliding is inherently a weather-dependent sport. Safety is paramount, and if the wind conditions, cloud cover, or any other meteorological factor isn’t playing nicely, it’s always better, and indeed mandatory, to remain safely on the ground. Professional guides like Martina will never compromise on safety, and rescheduling for another day is simply part of ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone.
