I have an undeniable weakness for doughnuts, or donuts, however you prefer to spell it. Whether it’s a homemade masterpiece, a classic store-bought treat, or a cafe creation, these heavenly spheres of buttery, sugary perfection are an indulgence I wholeheartedly embrace. During our memorable #FollowYourNola adventure in New Orleans, we had the distinct pleasure of savoring some truly exceptional donuts at the renowned District Donuts. This experience solidified its place as a top culinary destination in the city.
District Donuts: A New Orleans Institution
District Donuts holds a similar esteemed position in New Orleans as Blue Star Donuts does in Portland: it’s simply THE BEST. This is not just another donut shop; it’s a culinary experience crafted with passion and dedication.
What truly sets District Donuts apart is their unwavering commitment to crafting everything from scratch. They meticulously prepare all the dough, glazes, and pastry fillings by hand, ensuring that no artificial flavors ever make their way into their creations.
They even go the extra mile by crafting their own sprinkles from scratch! This level of dedication is truly impressive and reflects their passion for providing the highest quality treats to their customers.
District Donuts offers seven core daily rotations, featuring their beloved staples: the classic glazed, comforting cinnamon sugar, and decadent chocolate glazed. But the adventure doesn’t stop there! You’ll also discover a rotating selection of creative and innovative combinations, such as the refreshing Lemon Blackberry, the nostalgic S’mores, and the intensely flavorful Dark Chocolate Raspberry.
Occasionally, they also feature the ever-popular Maple Bacon, a flavor that has become a staple at donut shops in Portland and beyond. While they didn’t have it on the day of our visit, I did have the pleasure of trying the Irish Cream flavor. A word of caution: the Irish Cream donut does contain alcohol, so it’s not suitable for children!
Beyond their impressive donut selection, District Donuts also offers mouthwatering cinnamon rolls adorned with a crazy-tasty buttery glaze, and perfectly flaky biscuits that melt in your mouth. Be sure to ask for a side of extra butter – you won’t regret it!
Coffee: The Perfect Companion
I was pleasantly surprised and thrilled to discover that District Donuts serves Stumptown coffee, a renowned Portland-based roaster, at all of their locations. This commitment to quality extends beyond their food, ensuring that you can enjoy the perfect cup of coffee to complement your sweet treat.
Fries, Salads, Sliders, and More: Savory Options Abound
District Donuts isn’t just about donuts; they also offer a diverse menu of hot food items throughout the day. Whether you’re craving a hearty breakfast or a satisfying lunch, you’ll find something to tantalize your taste buds.
For breakfast, you can indulge in a flavorful pork belly breakfast taco ($5.50) or a classic scrambled egg & cheese biscuit ($4). These options provide a delicious and convenient way to start your day.
The lunch menu features a daily selection of three tempting sliders: Cheeseburger, Fried Chicken, and Tofu. While we visited early in the morning and didn’t have the opportunity to sample these sliders, I’ve heard rave reviews from friends who describe them as AMAZING. On my next visit, I’m definitely trying that fried chicken slider!
Complete your slider experience with a side of crispy waffle fries ($2.50) or indulgent cheese fries ($4). These sides provide the perfect complement to your savory selection.
If you’re feeling a pang of guilt and want to at least appear somewhat healthy, you can also order a little house salad ($4.50). However, let’s be honest: if you’re at District Donuts, you’re primarily there for the donuts. And District Donuts absolutely delivers on quality, taste, and pure indulgent goodness.
Visit District Donuts: Location and Details
District Donuts currently boasts four locations in Louisiana, making it easy to satisfy your donut cravings. We visited the Magazine Street location, which was surprisingly spacious for a donut shop. The interior featured bar seating, as well as a selection of 4-6 seater tables both inside and outside the shop. The staff was incredibly helpful and friendly, and they kept the line moving quickly, ensuring a smooth and efficient experience.
One of the most appealing aspects of District Donuts is the AMAZING prices, especially considering the high quality, artisan-level food. Donuts are priced at just $1.50 – $2.50 each (a steal compared to the $4 price tag you might find in Portland!). Sandwiches range from $3.25 – $4.50, and you can choose from a wide variety of coffee, tea, and juices for less than $4 each. This affordability makes District Donuts an accessible and enjoyable experience for everyone.
