🛒 Ingredient notes
You can make pie dough with simply a few ingredients.
- Flour – This recipe calls for all-purpose flour. We have not tested it with any other type of flour, so We can't guarantee any other type of flour would work. But if you do try a substitution, like gluten free flour or wheat flour, please leave a comment and let us know how it turned out!
- Sugar – Granulated sugar adds a touch of sweetness, enhancing the flavor of the crust. It also encourages browning, giving the dough a lovely golden brown sheen when it bakes.
- Salt – Kosher salt balances the sweetness from the sugar.
- Butter – Use cold, unsalted butter and cut it into small cubes.
- Egg – Lightly beat a large egg. Eggs add richness to the dough and also help bind the dry ingredients together.
- Vinegar – We swear by adding vinegar to the pie dough! It acts as a mild preservative and helps prevent the dough from being overworked and getting tough.
- Water – You'll mix ice cold water and vinegar with the egg.
- Egg wash– Lightly beat a second egg with a little water to create an egg wash. You will use this to brush on the dough before it bakes.
