About Cocina del Mar

Cocina del Mar sits inside the Esperanza resort along Cabo’s Tourist Corridor, roughly midway between downtown Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo. The restaurant occupies cascading terraces above two private beaches, with nearly every table facing the Sea of Cortez.

It’s easy to reach: a short taxi or rideshare from downtown Cabo takes about 15–20 minutes along the scenic coastal highway. The resort offers parking and valet if you prefer to drive.

Dinner at the edge of the continent

Walking into Esperanza, you pass a lively lantern-lit bar and lounge before descending terrace by terrace toward the water. Close to the ocean, tables overlook white-capped surf breaking on the rocks below. At golden hour the sky shifts through vivid oranges, pinks, and deep blues—an especially dramatic sunset over the Pacific.

The combination of sea, light, and sound creates a memorable dining atmosphere that elevates the cuisine.

Pro Tip

Allow extra time before your reservation to enjoy the resort walkways and terraces. The approach to the restaurant is part of the experience and worth lingering over.

Libations

The bar and lounge are ideal for a pre-dinner drink. Cocktails emphasize regional spirits—mezcal and tequila—with tropical fruit, smoked salts, and herbal notes that echo the Baja coastline.

Wine pairs well with the seafood-forward menu. During our visit we enjoyed a chilled rosé that complemented several courses; a crisp Sauvignon Blanc is another solid choice with the lighter dishes.

Baja on a plate

Cocina del Mar highlights ingredients from the Sea of Cortez and nearby farms. Vegetables arrive vibrant and fresh, and the seafood tastes exceptionally bright—clearly well sourced and expertly prepared. The menu tempts with many standout options, so deciding can be a delightfully difficult task.

We sampled several dishes and left impressed by the balance of flavors and the attention to detail in plating and seasoning.

Blue fin tuna

We began with the Blue Fin Tuna ($754 MXN): delicate sashimi served on a light tamarind sauce, finished with sesame oil, cilantro, radish, cucumber, and jalapeño. It was a clean, refreshing starter that set the tone for the meal.

Other tempting starters included oysters and wild blue shrimp—great choices if you want to sample more of the Sea of Cortez.

Seafood stunners

Red Snapper at Cocina del Mar restaurant.

Seafood dominates the mains, and for good reason. Highlights included:

Red Snapper ($1,364 MXN): Grilled and served with an ahi chile beurre blanc, corn furikake, and chives—an elegant, savory presentation.

Catch of the Day ($1,329 MXN): The fresh daily catch is often finished in a wood-fired oven to create a caramelized crust. Our dish came over a black lentil stew with smoked sweet chorizo, plantain, and cilantro—a lovely combination of textures and smokey, savory flavors.

Delectable desserts

Although we rarely order dessert, we made an exception for a birthday celebration. The chocolate cake with pistachio quenelle ice cream was beautifully presented and delicious—an indulgent ending to a memorable meal.

Celebration central

The team surprised us with a special birthday dessert and a small fireworks candle—an extra touch that made the evening even more festive. If you’re celebrating an anniversary, honeymoon, or birthday, mention it when you reserve; the staff is thoughtful about small celebrations.

Fireworks

On select evenings, fireworks light the sky over the water in front of the restaurant. If seeing fireworks matters to you, ask about the current schedule when you book and request a terrace table facing the open water for an unobstructed view.

Best Time to Dine

beach at Cocina del Mar restaurant.

To capture the full sunset-to-stars effect, book a seating around sunset—often between 5:30 and 6:00 p.m., depending on the season. That timing gives you golden hour as you’re seated and darker skies by the time dessert and any fireworks begin.

If sunset tables are unavailable, a slightly later reservation still offers dramatic cliffside lighting under string lights and a starry sky. Lunchtime is also appealing for a relaxed, sunlit experience with bright turquoise water.
