🛒 Key Ingredients for Air Fryer Apple Crisp

- Apples: You’ll need about 2 cups of fresh apples, cored, peeled, and diced. This is roughly 2-3 small or medium apples. Granny Smith, Honeycrisp or Gala apples are a great choice.
- Sugar: A touch of granulated sugar sweetens the tart apples. You can also use brown sugar in the apple mixture for a deeper flavor.
- Fall Spices: Ground cinnamon and ground nutmeg create a wonderful blend of classic fall flavors. You could also add a pinch of ground cloves for an extra layer of warmth.
- Salt: Use kosher salt to balance the sweetness. A pinch of sea salt would also work well.
- Brown Sugar: Light brown sugar (also known as golden brown sugar) gives the crisp topping a rich sweetness. Dark brown sugar will also work, resulting in a more molasses-like flavor.
- Butter: Use unsalted butter that has been melted and slightly cooled. This helps to create a tender and crumbly topping. You can use salted butter, but you may want to reduce the amount of kosher salt.
- Water: A little water helps soften the apples during air frying. Apple juice or apple cider can also be used for added flavor.
- Oats: A crispy oat topping requires quick-cooking oats or old-fashioned oats. Rolled oats will give a more substantial texture.
- Flour: All-purpose flour helps create the crunchy topping. For a gluten-free alternative, use a gluten-free all-purpose blend.
✅ How to Make Air Fryer Apple Crisp: Step-by-Step
A complete ingredient list, detailed instructions, and measurements are in the printable recipe card at the end of this post. But for those who prefer a visual guide, here’s a photo step-by-step walkthrough of how to make apple crisp in the air fryer.
Start by preheating your air fryer to 350°F (175°C) for 2-3 minutes.

- Lightly grease the inside of both oven-safe bowls or ramekins with butter. This prevents the apple crisp from sticking and adds a touch of flavor.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the diced apples, water, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Toss gently to ensure the apples are evenly coated in the spices and sugar.

3. Divide the spiced apple mixture evenly between the two prepared baking dishes. Ensuring equal portions guarantees even cooking.
4. Cover each dish tightly with aluminum foil and place it into the air fryer basket. Depending on the size of your air fryer and the size of your bowls/ramekins, you may need to work in batches. The foil helps to trap steam, softening the apples.
5. Air fry at 350°F (175°C) for 8 minutes. After 8 minutes, remove the foil, stir the apple filling, and carefully cover again with the foil. Air fry for another 8 minutes. This ensures the apples are cooked through but not mushy. This also encourages a delicious soft filling.
While the apples are air frying, prepare the streusel topping.

6. In another large mixing bowl, whisk together the oats, flour, brown sugar, and the melted butter. Use a fork or your fingers to work the butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

7. After the second 8-minute air frying session, carefully uncover the bowls. The bowls will be hot, so use oven mitts or tongs. Stir the apples gently.
8. Evenly distribute the streusel topping over the apple filling in both bowls. Air fry, uncovered, at 350°F (175°C) for a final 5 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and crispy. Keep a close eye on it to prevent burning.
👩🏻🍳 Air Frying Tips and Recipe FAQs

Air Frying Tips:
- Preheating your air fryer helps reduce cooking time, so be sure to preheat it for just 2-3 minutes. You can do this while prepping the apple crisp.
- Be sure to use oven-safe bowls/ramekins. If you see “oven safe” on the bottom, it’s usually safe for the air fryer.
- Alternatively, use silicone molds made for air fryers.
- This recipe makes 2 to 4 servings, depending on your bowl/mold size. It makes two servings using 10-ounce bowls.
- Remember that all air fryers are different. Cooking time might vary by a minute or two depending on your air fryer’s make, model, and size.
For best results, use Granny Smith or Golden Delicious apples. Honeycrisp apples may be too sweet, and Pink Lady apples could overpower the other ingredients.
Let the dessert cool, then cover tightly with plastic wrap and store in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
I used a combination of oatmeal and all-purpose flour. But you can use any type of flour instead of all-purpose flour. To give it a crunchier texture, add some chopped nuts (like pecans) to the top.
Yes, they are the same thing. Both a traditional apple crisp and apple crumble are made with cooked apples topped with a streusel topping.
🍽 Serving Ideas for Air Fryer Apple Crisp

This air fryer apple crisp is incredibly delicious on its own. But add a scoop of vanilla ice cream for a flavor explosion!
It’s quick to make, so you can enjoy this dessert on even the busiest weeknights. But it’s also special enough for small holiday gatherings for Thanksgiving, Christmas, or New Year’s Eve.
