Recently, my family and I had the opportunity to experience a KOA campground firsthand. We chose the Astoria/Warrenton/Seaside KOA in Astoria, Oregon, a location that offered the perfect balance of accessibility and escape. Situated within driving distance, yet far enough to feel like a true adventure, it proved to be an excellent choice for our family getaway.

Upon arrival, I was immediately struck by the expansive nature of the property. The Astoria KOA is a destination in itself, offering enough activities and amenities to keep you entertained throughout your entire vacation without ever needing to leave the premises.

One of the biggest advantages of KOA is the variety of lodging and camping options available. While each KOA location offers a unique experience, you can generally expect a selection of choices to suit your individual needs and preferences. At the Astoria KOA, we found:

• RV Camping Sites: Offering various configurations such as back-in or pull-through parking, with options for 30-50 amp electrical service, water hookups, and cable TV.
• Tent Sites: Available with or without hookups for water and electricity, catering to both seasoned and novice tent campers.
• One-Room Cabins: Providing basic shelter without bathrooms, these cabins can accommodate up to 5 people and are a great option for budget-conscious travelers.
• Two-Room Cabins: Offering more space and privacy, these cabins may or may not include bathrooms and can sleep up to 6 people.
• Deluxe Cabins: The epitome of comfort and convenience, these cabins come fully equipped with bathrooms and a range of amenities.

Deluxe KOA Cabins: Camping in Style

For our family, we opted for one of the Deluxe Cabins, which comfortably accommodates up to six people. These cabins typically range in price around $200 per night, depending on the season and location. Our cabin featured ample parking space for our vehicle, along with a picnic area and a fire pit for outdoor enjoyment.

Stepping inside, we were delighted by the cleanliness, spaciousness, and thoughtful amenities provided. The cabin included a full-size refrigerator, two televisions, a microwave, a coffee maker, and essential kitchenware such as plates, glasses, and cookware. This allowed us to prepare meals easily and enjoy the convenience of home while still embracing the camping experience.

The Deluxe Cabin featured a separate bedroom with a comfortable full-size bed, complete with fresh linens and extra blankets. This provided a welcome retreat for adults seeking a peaceful night’s sleep.

In addition to the bedroom, the living room area included a futon, providing extra sleeping space. A set of bunk beds in the hallway proved to be a hit with the kids, offering them their own designated sleeping area.

Many KOA cabins, including ours, are also pet-friendly. However, it’s essential to check with the specific KOA location you’re considering to ensure your pet meets their guidelines and restrictions.

Start Your Day with a Pancake Breakfast

One of the highlights of our stay at the Astoria KOA was the complimentary pancake breakfast offered each morning. Each guest received a stack of two pancakes, and we had the option to purchase additional toppings, bacon, sausage, eggs, and beverages for a reasonable price. It was a delightful experience to see families gathering together each morning to enjoy a hearty breakfast before embarking on their day’s adventures.

With so many activities and amenities available on-site, you can easily spend your entire vacation without leaving the KOA campground. Daily arts and crafts activities, movie nights, and other scheduled events provide ample opportunities for entertainment and engagement. Endless Fun for the Kids

The Astoria KOA is a paradise for children, offering a wide range of activities to keep them entertained. Located near the dining hall, you’ll find two large playgrounds, a massive “jump pillow” (a giant inflatable bouncy surface), and a miniature golf course.

Dive into Fun at the Swimming Pool

The highlight of our kids’ experience at the KOA was undoubtedly the enormous swimming pool. This family-friendly pool features a shallow area that is 3 feet deep, transitioning to a 4-foot depth, and finally a small section that reaches 5 feet. While there is no lifeguard on duty, the pool’s design makes it safe and enjoyable for children of all ages. In fact, my kids declared it to be one of the best pools they’ve ever encountered, surpassing many hotel pools we’ve visited.

After a refreshing swim, we appreciated having a porch with rocking chairs (some cabins even have porch swings) where we could relax and unwind. The Astoria KOA also offers bike rentals, a hot tub, Wi-Fi access, and cable TV.

Other KOA locations may offer even more elaborate amenities, such as water slides and infinity pools. With such a wide variety of options available, you’re sure to find a KOA that provides the perfect combination of camping and entertainment for your travel destination.

The KOA Store: Your One-Stop Shop

Forgot something at home? No problem! The KOA store has you covered. From toiletries and food to souvenirs, toys, and fishing gear, you’ll find a wide array of necessities and trinkets at the general store.

My kids were particularly drawn to the KOA Gemstone Mine in the store, where they could pan for shiny rocks and treasures.

Ideal for Large Groups and Gatherings

During our stay at the Astoria KOA, I was impressed by the number of large groups that had gathered there. Families from all over the country, multi-family camping trips, family reunions, college friends reconnecting, and even participants in the Hood to Coast relay race were all enjoying the KOA experience. They gathered around fire pits, on playgrounds, and in picnic areas, creating a vibrant and communal atmosphere.

The sound of engines and the weary footsteps of early-morning fishermen filled the air, followed by the sight of them gathering around the fish cleaning stations later in the day. The sense of community and shared experience was palpable.

I thoroughly enjoyed the family-friendly atmosphere at the KOA. I felt safe and secure, thanks to the visible presence of KOA staff throughout the grounds. I couldn’t help but imagine how much my own family would have loved to gather there for our reunions. While I appreciate the comfort and amenities of cozy hotels, I also embrace my Pacific Northwest roots and the joy of gathering around a fire at the end of a long day of hiking, boating, exploring, fishing, and sharing a meal of fresh-caught seafood with loved ones.
