A Little About Knott’s Berry Farm

The iconic entrance to Knott's Berry Farm
The welcoming entrance to Knott’s Berry Farm in Buena Park, California.

Knott’s Berry Farm is more than just a beloved Southern California theme park; it’s a historical landmark with deep roots in the region’s agricultural past.

Before the thrilling roller coasters and captivating shows, Knott’s Berry Farm began as a family farm and roadside stand in the 1920s. Walter and Cordelia Knott cultivated fresh berries, made homemade jams, and served delicious fried chicken dinners to hungry travelers.

What started as a humble family farm gradually evolved into the amusement park that generations have come to love. However, the park’s origins are still celebrated through its culinary offerings – and nothing embodies this history more than the Boysenberry.

Knott’s Berry Farm and the Invention of Boysenberries

A historical photo of Walter and Cordelia Knott
Walter and Cordelia Knott, the founders of Knott’s Berry Farm.

The story of the Boysenberry is almost as exciting as the rides at Knott’s Berry Farm. It’s a tale of innovation, perseverance, and a little bit of luck.

In the early 20th century, a resourceful farmer named Rudolph Boysen experimented with crossbreeding different types of berries, including blackberries, raspberries, and loganberries.

While Boysen created this unique hybrid berry, it struggled to thrive commercially until Walter Knott recognized its potential. Knott cultivated the berry, perfected its flavor, and successfully brought it to market.

The Boysenberry quickly gained popularity, attracting visitors to the Knott farm eager to experience its distinctive taste. Its success was a pivotal point in the farm’s transformation into a beloved destination.

And the rest, as they say, is history! To this day, the Boysenberry’s legacy is celebrated throughout Knott’s Berry Farm, solidifying its place as the park’s signature flavor.

Follow Our Unofficial Boysenberry Trail

Part of the excitement of this unofficial Boysenberry trail is discovering the diverse ways this small fruit can be enjoyed. The culinary team at Knott’s Berry Farm has truly embraced the Boysenberry’s versatility!

At Knott’s, you’ll find the Boysenberry infused into a wide range of items, from traditional jams and jellies to indulgent funnel cakes, crispy churros, fluffy cotton candy, and tangy barbecue sauce. The berry’s flavor even extends to savory dishes like meatballs and chicken wings. Plus, it features prominently in refreshing drinks like lemonades, handcrafted sodas, and seasonal Boysenberry beer and wine.

You can savor the Boysenberry while strolling through Ghost Town, indulge in a sweet treat in the Boardwalk area, or purchase jars of jam and candies to take home from the Marketplace.

I did not see a Boysenberry pasta dish, which is something I’m willing to take on to creating my own Boysenberry pasta recipe…who knows maybe you will see it at the park sometime!

But, for now, enjoy all the Boysenberry goodness at the park! Be sure to grab a Knott’s Berry Farm map to locate restaurants, attractions, rides, and more.

We began our day at the Thirty Acres Kitchen restaurant, conveniently located inside the Knott’s Hotel. A short 5-10 minute walk from the park entrance, this restaurant is perfect for families. It’s a Boysenberry lover’s paradise!

Our group enjoyed the Boysenberry in various refreshing drinks: coffee, lemonade, and punch. We also particularly loved the Boysenberry jam, which was perfect for dipping toast or adding a sweet touch to my breakfast sandwich.

And, of course, you can’t leave without trying the pancake stack with – you guessed it – Boysenberry syrup. It’s heavenly!

Where to find it: Sutter’s Funnel Cake

You can’t visit a theme park without indulging in a funnel cake, right? Knott’s Berry Farm elevates this classic treat with their special Boysenberry funnel cake. I appreciated that it wasn’t completely drowned in cinnamon sugar but had just the right amount.

The Boysenberry topping added a delightful fresh and tart flavor to this fried delicacy.

A popular destination for those of legal drinking age at Knott’s Berry Farm is the Cantina Del Sur. Here, you can order flights of margaritas, and you absolutely must include at least one Boysenberry margarita in your selection. These are the rules!

The Boysenberry margaritas are sweet, but not overly so, and beautifully balanced by the spicy kick of the Tajin salt rim. A refreshing treat on a sunny day at the park.
