The Unique Story Behind Angela Estate

The saga of Angela Estate is a tapestry woven from strands connecting South Africa, Kentucky, and Oregon. Antony and Angela Beck, second-generation South African winery owners, are the driving force behind this exceptional winery. Their journey into Oregon wine began with a chance encounter with Oregon wine luminary Ken Wright at a charity event in Kentucky, where they currently manage a prestigious thoroughbred horse breeding farm. This meeting sparked a friendship and the initial concept for a groundbreaking wine venture. In 2006, the Becks, in collaboration with Wright, planted the first vines that would eventually become Angela Estate, marking the beginning of their Oregon wine legacy.

During a recent press tour with Angela Estate, we had the distinct privilege of meeting Pieter Ferreira, the esteemed winemaker from Graham Beck (pictured above). When asked about the secret to Graham Beck’s consistent success, he simply attributed it to “sunshine,” highlighting the importance of climate in crafting exceptional wines.

Exploring the Excellence of Angela Estate Wine

While Oregon may not bask in as much sunshine as South Africa, it undeniably possesses the ideal climate and terroir for producing world-class wines, particularly Oregon Pinot Noir. This is where Ken Wright’s expertise comes into play, shaping the ongoing narrative of Angela Estate.

Currently, Angela Estate is Wright’s sole wine project outside of his own esteemed Ken Wright Cellars. He meticulously crafts a range of exceptional Pinot Noirs for Angela Estate, including the Angela Vineyard Pinot Noir, Abbot Claim Pinot Noir, and the Tappit Reserve Pinot Noir. These wines have garnered significant acclaim, with the 2014 Angela Vineyard Pinot Noir ($48) earning a noteworthy 92 points from Wine Enthusiast. The 2013 Abbot Claim Pinot Noir ($60) also received a 92-point rating from Wine Enthusiast, solidifying its reputation for excellence.

Angela Estate has also introduced a limited series of single-clone Pinot Noirs, featuring Dijon 777, Dijon 115, Pommard, and Wadenswil clones (all priced at $54 each). These exclusive wines are currently available only through the online store or to wine club members, offering a unique opportunity to experience the nuances of single-clone Pinot Noir.

During a recent visit, I had the pleasure of sampling each of these remarkable wines, and I must confess that I was thoroughly impressed by them all. It continues to amaze me how significantly Pinot Noirs can differ in character from one vineyard to another and from one vintage to the next. If I were pressed to choose a favorite, I would lean towards the 2013 Abbot Claim Pinot Noir. My palate gravitates towards rich, brooding Pinot Noirs, and the 2013 Abbot Claim perfectly embodies this profile. It’s a medium-bodied Pinot Noir brimming with luscious dark fruit flavors and a lingering mouthfeel, exceeding the expectations of a typical Oregon Pinot Noir. The experience evoked a desire to curl up by the fireplace with a bottle of this exceptional wine. In fact, I purchased a bottle and did exactly that shortly after my visit!
