Our family recently enjoyed a road trip from Portland to Victoria, BC, followed by a visit to Vancouver, BC, for spring break. The experience was incredible, and the journey was surprisingly straightforward. Driving to Port Angeles, Washington, and then taking a ferry to Victoria proved to be a convenient and enjoyable route.

While driving the entire distance is an option, opting for the ferry saves approximately 3 hours and adds a unique element to the trip. Who wouldn’t want to cruise through the stunning waters of the Pacific Northwest?

Enjoying the Scenic Drive Through the Pacific Northwest

The drive from Portland, Oregon, to Port Angeles, Washington, took approximately four and a half hours. We made a brief 20-minute stop for gas and snacks. As you venture off I-5 onto the state highway leading to Port Angeles, prepare to be captivated by the breathtaking scenery.

The route takes you along the picturesque Hood Canal and through the enchanting Olympic National Forest. This region’s beauty is undeniable, and it’s easy to understand why so many people choose to vacation in this part of the Northwest. The towering trees, serene waters, and fresh air create an unforgettable experience.

Arriving in Port Angeles, Washington

Victoria, BC, is situated on Vancouver Island, one of the many islands in the region. The only way to reach it from Port Angeles is by ferry.

Upon arrival in Port Angeles, clear signage makes it easy to navigate to the ferry terminal.

Adjacent to the ferry dock, you’ll find a variety of dining options, from quick-bite cafes to more formal sit-down restaurants. Whether you’re in the mood for a light snack or a hearty meal, there’s something to satisfy every craving.

There is also a delightful dock perfect for a leisurely stroll. Enjoy the stunning views and breathe in the fresh sea air while awaiting your ferry’s departure.

Embarking on the MV Coho Ferry: Port Angeles to Victoria, BC

For nearly 50 years, the historic MV Coho Ferry, operated by the Black Ball Ferry Line, has been the primary vehicle and passenger ferry connecting Port Angeles, Washington, and Victoria, BC. With a capacity of 100 vehicles and 1,000 passengers per trip, the MV Coho is a spacious and well-managed transportation option available year-round.

First time riding the MV Coho Ferry from Port Angeles to Victoria BC? Here’s some helpful advice!

Canadian or US Dollars? Currency in Victoria, BC

You can use either Canadian or US dollars to pay for ferry tickets, snacks, and souvenirs on board. Keep in mind that some credit cards charge international transaction fees. As soon as you enter Canadian territory, these fees will apply to every card purchase.

Essential Travel Documents: US to Victoria, BC

Upon arrival in Victoria, you will need to pass through customs, which requires valid proof of citizenship. We presented our passports.

However, children aged 16 and under can present:

A passport
An original birth certificate
A naturalization certificate/citizenship card

Remember to check the latest travel regulations before your trip, as border requirements can change.

Ferry Costs: Your Guide to Pricing

You have the option to travel as a walk-on passenger or bring your vehicle on the ferry.

For the best prices and availability, it is strongly recommended to make a reservation in advance if you plan to take a vehicle on the Coho Ferry. Rates start at $76.50 for a one-way ticket for a vehicle and driver, plus a vehicle reservation fee.

Tickets are also required for each additional passenger. Adult tickets cost $22.50 each way, while children under 12 are $11.25.

Therefore, a round-trip journey for a family of two adults and two children under 12 would cost $259 (including a $16 round-trip vehicle reservation).

Children under four years of age travel for free.

Online vehicle reservations must be made at least 12 hours before sailing. Telephone reservations can be made up to one hour before sailing for last-minute planners.

Tour buses and commercial vehicles should call in advance for specific rates.

Note: Avoid traveling during the third week of February, as the ferry undergoes annual maintenance and is closed.

Boarding the Ferry: A Step-by-Step Guide

Upon arriving at the ticket booth, expect a potential line. After receiving your ticket, place it on your dashboard and proceed to the numbered row assigned by the dock agent. Park directly behind the last car in the row.

You can remain in your car at this point. However, if the wait is longer than 20 minutes, you can stretch your legs. An announcement will be made approximately 10-15 minutes before boarding, signaling passengers to return to their vehicles.

The vehicle loading process is efficient and well-organized. Staff will guide you to your lanes inside the ferry. By paying attention to their instructions, everyone boards and disembarks safely and quickly.

After parking, exit your vehicle and proceed to the upper passenger seating areas. Passengers are not allowed to remain in their vehicles during the ferry crossing.

Ferry Ride Duration: What to Expect

Ferries depart from Port Angeles twice daily: in the morning and mid-afternoon. The sail time to Victoria, BC, is approximately 90 minutes from port to port.

Departing in the morning is often the best choice, allowing you to enjoy a full day in Victoria after disembarking.

During the journey, take advantage of the ferry’s WiFi and use your electronic devices. It is always wise to keep valuables with you at all times, regardless of the perceived safety of the environment. Traveling light and keeping valuables to a minimum is always a good strategy.

You can remain seated in the covered passenger areas or move around inside and outside the main area throughout the trip.

What to Wear: Preparing for the Ferry Ride

Regardless of the time of year, bringing at least a light jacket is advisable. The sailing can be quite windy and sometimes rainy. During our trip, my daughter and I could only spend a few minutes outside before the cold and wind became overwhelming.

Experiencing the ferry ride from the outside is highly recommended, even for a short while. You’ll be rewarded with stunning views of the surrounding islands!

Dining on Board: What to Eat on the Ferry

The MV Coho features a small snack bar and seating area where you can purchase hot and cold beverages. Options include coffee, beer, wine, and kid-friendly choices like milk and apple juice. You can also buy snacks such as cookies, crackers, hot dogs, and nachos to enjoy in comfort.

The ferry ride from Port Angeles to Victoria is remarkably smooth and passes quickly. My favorite moment was about 10 minutes before reaching the shore, when the city comes into view. It’s the perfect time to head outside and witness the stunning panorama.
