Essential Tips for Traveling on the Amtrak Cascades
If you’re new to the Amtrak Cascades, here’s what you need to know to prepare for your trip:
Arriving at the Train Station: What to Do
The process is quite similar to air travel. Upon arrival at the station, locate the ticket counter to check-in and obtain your tickets, especially if you don’t have an e-ticket. Find your train number on the departure board and join the queue for seat assignments.
In Portland, it’s recommended to line up about 30 minutes before your train’s departure. On my trip, the line was quite long, so it’s wise to arrive with ample time to spare and avoid any last-minute stress.
Finding Your Seat: A Simple Guide
The car numbers are clearly displayed on the exterior of each train car. Inside, seat numbers are located above each seat. Once you find your assigned seat, place your seat assignment slip in the small plastic slot above the seat. This signals to the train personnel and other passengers that the seat is occupied.
Luggage Allowance and Storage: What to Expect
The luggage policy is similar to most commercial flights, allowing each passenger two pieces of luggage and one personal item.
You can store a handbag or small backpack under the seat in front of you. Overhead compartments are available for carry-on luggage. For larger items, there are luggage racks located at the end of each car where you can check your bags.
Satisfying Your Hunger: Exploring the Bistro and Dining Cars

If you’re feeling hungry or thirsty, head to the Bistro Car, typically located between Business and Coach class. On the Amtrak Cascades, you’ll find a range of options, including:
- Breakfast sandwiches
- Bagels
- Yogurt parfaits
- Turkey sandwiches
- Hamburgers
- Hot dogs
- Salads
- Cookies and other desserts
A selection of soft drinks, wine, and beer is also available.
Important Note: If you have specific dietary restrictions, I strongly advise bringing your own snacks and meals. The Amtrak Cascades Bistro has limited gluten-free, dairy-free, and egg-free options.
In the photo above, you can see that I opted for the chicken teriyaki bowl and an apple, which I supplemented with my own snack pack. If a particular item is out of stock in the Bistro, it’s worth checking back after the train restocks its food inventory in Seattle.
Adjacent to the Bistro Car is the Dining Car. If available, I recommend enjoying your meals there. It provides extra space to stretch your legs and dine at a full table rather than using your seatback tray. Please be mindful and only occupy a table if you are actively eating or drinking.
Staying Hydrated: An Essential Travel Tip

Unlike air travel, there are no restrictions on bringing liquids onboard the train. I highly recommend packing a water bottle to stay hydrated throughout the trip. It’s an easy way to ensure you’re comfortable and refreshed.
Free Wi-Fi: Stay Connected Onboard
The Amtrak Cascades offers free Wi-Fi on the route from Portland to Vancouver BC. I found the connection to be fairly reliable on both legs of my journey. It’s a great way to catch up on work, browse the internet, or simply stay connected while enjoying the beautiful scenery!

Restrooms: Conveniently Located
Restrooms are located at the back of each car, with the exception of the last car in most cases. You’ll also find trash and recycling receptacles behind the last seat in each car, making it easy to keep your surroundings tidy.
Stretching Your Legs: Room to Move Around
The train journey from Portland to Vancouver BC can be a long one, so it’s important to stretch your legs and stay comfortable. While legroom on the Amtrak Cascades is similar to that on commercial airlines, the middle aisle offers more space. This makes it easier to get up and walk around as needed.
There are also designated spots between cars where you can stand, stretch, and enjoy the views without disturbing other passengers. These areas are also ideal for making cell phone calls.
