Is Watermelon Safe for Dogs?

Absolutely! Watermelon is a wholesome, all-natural treat for your canine companion! Just remember to use seedless watermelon to avoid any digestive issues.

Watermelon is composed of 92% water, making it an excellent source of hydration. Particularly during the warmer months, fresh-cut watermelon can serve as a delectable snack to help ensure your dog stays properly hydrated.

Can Dogs Eat Blueberries?

Similar to watermelon, blueberries are a nutritious fruit that dogs can enjoy as a snack. Abundant in antioxidants, Vitamin C, fiber, and low in sugar, most dogs will relish the occasional blueberry treat.

Yogurt and Dogs: What You Need to Know

The majority of dogs can tolerate a small amount of yogurt. Yogurt tends to be rich in calcium and protein. It can also function as a probiotic, which can be beneficial for your dog’s digestive system.

However, there are crucial factors to consider before offering yogurt to your dog:

• Ensure that you NEVER feed your dog yogurt containing xylitol. This artificial sweetener is frequently found in human foods and is highly toxic to dogs!
• You should also only feed your dog plain yogurt with no added sugar. Added sugars can lead to digestive upset and weight gain.

Once you’ve verified that the yogurt is plain, contains no added sugar, and does NOT contain xylitol, you can most likely safely feed your dog a small portion of that yogurt.

VERY IMPORTANT NOTE: Always consult with your dog’s veterinarian before introducing any new foods into your pet’s diet. Every dog is unique, and your dog may or may not be able to tolerate certain foods that other dogs can.

Making Watermelon Dog Treats: A Step-by-Step Guide

Begin by measuring out your ingredients. You’ll need watermelon, blueberries, and plain yogurt (refer to the printable recipe card below for exact measurements and detailed instructions).

Next, blend the watermelon in a blender until smooth.

Spoon a small amount of yogurt into each mold, just enough to cover the bottom.

Place 1-3 blueberries in each mold on top of the yogurt.

Carefully pour the pureed watermelon into each mold, filling it to the top.

Gently place the molds into the freezer for a minimum of two hours, allowing the treats to fully freeze.

When you’re ready to serve, simply pop the individual treats out of the mold and present them to your pup!

Recipe Tips for the Best Frozen Dog Treats

Here are some helpful tips to assist you in creating these delicious homemade frozen dog treats:

• Use seedless watermelon and blend it until it reaches the consistency of a slushie.
• Blueberries are generally small enough that they don’t require cutting. However, if you have a particularly small breed dog, you may want to cut them in half for safety.
• Transferring the watermelon puree into a smaller measuring cup with a pour spout, or any other small jug with a pour spout, will help prevent spills. Attempting to pour directly from a large blender pitcher often leads to overfilling the molds too quickly.
• Depending on the size of your molds, you may have ingredients leftover. Simply pour any remaining mixture into plain ice cube trays for more frozen treats for your dog!

These frozen dog treats have yummy and healthy watermelon, blueberries, and yogurt. So easy to make!

Equipment

• Dog Treat Silicone Molds

Ingredients 

• 
  2
  cups
  chopped seedless watermelon

• 
  1/4
  cup
  blueberries

• 
  1
  cup
  plain yogurt

Instructions 

• Puree the watermelon in a blender, and set aside.
• Spoon a small amount of yogurt Into each mold, just enough to cover the bottom.
• Place 1-2 blueberries in each mold.
• Pour watermelon puree into each mold just until it reaches the top.
• Freeze for at least two hours. Once frozen, gently pop each frozen dog treat out of the molds, then feed to your dog.

Notes

Remember that every dog is different. Some dogs have more delicate tummies and/or require different types of food. Please be sure to check with your dog’s vet if you are unsure whether your dog can eat the ingredients in any dog treat recipe.
You may have some of each ingredient leftover, or you may need more, depending on the size of your silicone molds and the amount you are making. As is, this recipe makes approximately 28-35 frozen dog treats, using the dog paw silicone mold and the dog bone silicone mold pictured here. 
Once frozen, you can gently pop the frozen dog treats out of the molds and place into a freezer safe container. Cover, and keep frozen for up to 2 months. Take out a few treats at a time when you are ready to treat your awesome dog.
