The vibrant heart of Hawaii beat with an extraordinary rhythm at the 14th Annual Waikiki SPAM Jam, a culinary celebration that transformed Kalakaua Avenue into an unparalleled feast for all senses. Talented chefs from across the islands truly outdid themselves, serving up some of the most imaginative and mouth-watering concoctions, all centered around Hawaii’s undeniably favorite ingredient: SPAM. This isn’t just a food festival; it’s a cultural phenomenon, a testament to the enduring love affair between the Pacific Islands and a humble can of pork.

My personal connection to SPAM runs deep, rooted in my childhood on the beautiful island of Guam, a United States territory nestled in the vast expanse of the Pacific Ocean. My earliest memories are steeped in the warmth of family life, often centered around simple yet deeply satisfying meals. When I was just two years old, my parents, my great-grandmother, and I embarked on a new adventure, moving thousands of miles across the ocean to Portland, Oregon.
Despite the change in scenery, some traditions remained. In Guam, SPAM is more than just a food; it’s a cultural staple, a cherished part of everyday life. Even after our relocation to the mainland, the comforting ritual of eating SPAM, perfectly cooked rice, and fluffy eggs for breakfast – and sometimes lunch – several times a week, persisted. It was my absolute favorite meal, a combination that transcended mere sustenance to become a powerful symbol of comfort, warmth, and pure happiness. To this very day, even after years of not indulging (until this incredible weekend!), the mere thought of that iconic trio transports me back to those cherished memories, evoking a profound sense of home.
So, when the extraordinary opportunity arose to travel to Honolulu, Hawaii, specifically to attend the 14th Annual SPAM Jam, my excitement was boundless. It felt like a pilgrimage, a return to the very essence of a food that had shaped my palate and my heart.
What is SPAM: An Iconic Canned Meat Product

For those unfamiliar with this iconic culinary enigma, SPAM is a brand of canned cooked pork, introduced to the world by Hormel Foods in 1937. It’s a product that has, over decades, carved out a unique and often misunderstood niche in global cuisine. The core ingredients are surprisingly straightforward: pork with ham, water, salt, potato starch, sugar, and sodium nitrite to preserve its distinctive pink color and ensure its remarkable shelf life. Essentially, you can think of it as a flavorful, compact, and incredibly versatile form of pre-cooked meat, akin to a sausage or a meatloaf in a can.
While it certainly isn’t marketed as a health food, its robust nutritional profile and exceptional longevity in various climates are precisely what cemented its place in history and, ultimately, in the hearts of many, particularly across the Pacific Islands. Its ability to remain palatable and safe to eat for extended periods without refrigeration made it an invaluable resource during times of war and economic hardship, leading to its widespread adoption and subsequent transformation into a beloved cultural staple.
Why SPAM Holds a Special Place in Pacific Island Culture

The story of SPAM’s deep integration into the culinary landscape of the Pacific Islands is a fascinating tale rooted in necessity and resilience. During World War II, SPAM was mass-produced and shipped in vast quantities to American military bases stationed across the Pacific, serving as a vital and dependable protein source for soldiers. Its non-perishable nature made it ideal for long journeys and storage in tropical climates, where fresh meat was scarce and refrigeration challenging.
As the war progressed and in the subsequent years of occupation, SPAM was introduced to local populations in Hawaii, Guam, the Philippines, and numerous other Pacific Islands. These islands often faced significant challenges regarding food supply; arable land for farming can be limited, and the cost of importing fresh produce and meats is prohibitively high due to expensive shipping. SPAM, with its affordability, long shelf life, and ease of preparation, quickly became an indispensable part of daily diets. Locals creatively embraced this new ingredient, developing countless recipes that transformed it from a simple military ration into a versatile and beloved component of their unique cuisines. This historical context explains why, by the end of the war, the military had purchased an astounding 150 million pounds of SPAM – a staggering figure that underscores its critical role in feeding a nation at war. It’s safe to say that those military strategists could scarcely have imagined the incredible culinary artistry and joyous celebration that would one day define events like the Waikiki SPAM Jam.
Exclusive Insights: The Waikiki SPAM Jam VIP Reception
The 14th Annual Waikiki SPAM Jam itself was slated for Saturday, April 30th, promising a vibrant street festival experience from 4 PM to 10 PM along Waikiki’s famously bustling Kalakaua Avenue. As a free event, it welcomed the public to partake in the festivities, though food and merchandise were available for purchase from individual vendor stands. Crucially, all proceeds generated from the event went directly to benefit worthy local charities, including the Hawaii Foodbank, the Waikiki Community Center, and the Visitor Aloha Society, reinforcing the community-driven spirit behind the celebration.
I was incredibly fortunate to attend this premier event, a privilege made possible by the generosity of the event’s presenting sponsor, Outrigger Hotels and Resorts. Their support not only made my journey possible but also provided an unforgettable pre-festival experience.

The festivities officially kicked off with an exclusive VIP reception the night before the main event. Hosted in a breathtaking suite at the Outrigger Waikiki Beach Resort, specifically Suite #123, the setting was nothing short of spectacular. The suite boasted a sprawling outdoor terrace that offered sweeping, panoramic ocean views, providing a perfect backdrop for mingling and anticipation. This particular suite is renowned for its elegance and is often chosen for intimate weddings and other special events, making it an ideal location for such a distinguished gathering. If you’re ever envisioning a dream wedding with a Hawaiian backdrop, this suite is definitely one to explore!
Guests at the reception were treated to an incredible buffet, a delightful spread that showcased both inventive SPAM dishes and other local culinary delights. Among the many tempting offerings, the ahi tuna tacos stood out as a personal favorite, perfectly capturing the fresh, vibrant flavors of Hawaiian cuisine.
The tender pork ribs were another highlight, cooked to perfection and embodying the rich, savory tastes characteristic of island-style barbecue.

And then there was the Hello Kitty SPAM Musubi – an utterly adorable and delicious twist on Hawaii’s beloved snack, fusing pop culture charm with local flavor. This reception perfectly set the stage for the culinary wonders and festive spirit awaiting us at the main SPAM Jam event.
The Social Buzz and Pre-Festival Excitement: The Tweet Up

The morning of the main festival, Saturday, kicked off with a delightful and modern pre-event gathering: the SPAM Jam Tweet Up. This intimate session, held just before the street festival officially opened its gates, provided a fantastic opportunity for media, influencers, and dedicated fans to connect and build excitement. One of the undisputed highlights was the chance to meet none other than SPAM Can himself! The larger-than-life mascot was a crowd-pleaser, radiating cheer and playful energy, perfectly embodying the fun spirit of the festival.

In a memorable moment of pure festival joy, SPAM Can even playfully photobombed my picture with the equally iconic Hello Kitty mascot, adding an extra layer of spontaneous fun to the morning’s activities. These lighthearted interactions truly made the experience feel special and personal.

Beyond the delightful mascot encounters, the Tweet Up offered a practical and much-appreciated advantage: the opportunity to sample many of the dishes destined for the main SPAM Jam festival ahead of time. This allowed us to capture stunning photos and videos for Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter, and Facebook without the bustling crowds, ensuring a more focused and enjoyable tasting experience. It was a thoughtful touch that truly enhanced the overall enjoyment and content creation process.

The Tweet Up culminated in an exciting raffle, with an array of fantastic prizes up for grabs. Among the most coveted were two grand prizes from sponsor Alaska Airlines: a whopping 80,000 miles and MVP Gold status through 2017. As an ardent fan of Alaska Air, I certainly had my fingers crossed for either of those! Alas, those grand prizes eluded me. However, I did win one of the charming SPAM Hello Kitty Musubi kits pictured above, and I was genuinely thrilled! The thought of being able to recreate that adorable Hello Kitty SPAM Musubi from the VIP reception in my own kitchen fills me with immense joy and a sense of playful culinary adventure.
The Grand Spectacle: The 14th Annual Waikiki SPAM Jam
As the afternoon sun began its gentle descent, Kalakaua Avenue, typically a bustling thoroughfare of high-end shops and resort activity, underwent a magical transformation. The stretch outside the Outrigger Waikiki Beach Resort bloomed into a vibrant, pedestrian-only festival grounds, pulsating with the energy of thousands ready to celebrate all things SPAM. More than 25,000 people were anticipated to attend the 14th Annual SPAM Jam, and the sheer volume of attendees underscored its status as a premier Hawaiian event.

One of the festival’s most appealing aspects was its progression from afternoon into night. The early hours offered a lively, family-friendly atmosphere, perfect for daytime strolls and enjoying the sunshine. As dusk settled, the mood shifted subtly, evolving into a more energetic party mode with live music and twinkling lights illuminating the street, providing a dynamic experience for all ages and preferences.

The event was not only family-friendly but also wonderfully dog-friendly, adding to the joyous community vibe. My personal hero of the night was an impeccably dressed SPAM dog, cruising along in style within his stroller, complete with a personal fan to keep him cool! It was just one example of the charming and unique sights that made the SPAM Jam so memorable.
Beyond the culinary delights, the festival was a veritable treasure trove of ALL THINGS SPAM! From quirky T-shirts and adorable stuffed animals to practical bags, fun stickers, and even oven mitts, if it could bear the SPAM logo, you could find it here. I’m still kicking myself for not snatching up one of those “I Heart Spam” trucker caps – a truly iconic souvenir!
As with any popular festival, long lines were part of the experience, forming at various booths throughout the day and evening. These queues weren’t just for the highly anticipated food vendors; the line pictured above, for instance, was for Long’s Drugs, which delighted attendees with cool prizes after they participated in one of their engaging booth games. It was a testament to the diverse attractions available at the SPAM Jam.
And, of course, the true stars of the show were the incredible, SPAM-infused culinary creations. Fifteen diverse food vendors stepped up to the challenge, each presenting truly creative and often surprising dishes, all expertly incorporating SPAM as the star ingredient. The innovation was astounding, transforming the humble canned meat into gourmet delights. Here are a few of my absolute favorites, showcasing the remarkable versatility of SPAM:
BUHO truly excelled with their innovative SPAM Tacos. These were an instant favorite, marrying the savory notes of SPAM with a refreshing, zesty pineapple salsa that provided a burst of tropical flavor and a delightful textural contrast.
Chai Waikiki presented visually appealing and equally delicious SPAM Fritters, perfectly golden and crispy, served alongside vibrant, fresh pineapple slices that cut through the richness of the fritters with their juicy sweetness.

The Hard Rock Cafe surprised everyone with their inventive and undeniably tasty SPAM Mac & Cheese bites. These miniature explosions of creamy, cheesy goodness, combined with the savory crunch of SPAM, were an absolute hit, proving that comfort food can always be elevated.
And for those craving a unique snack, the Hard Rock Cafe also offered crispy SPAM Chips – a delightfully unexpected take on a classic snack, proving SPAM’s adaptability even further.

However, the award for the most beautiful and daring dish in my book undoubtedly went to Mac 24/7 for their exquisite Coconut SPAM Flan. This sophisticated dessert was a masterclass in transformation, featuring a delicate flan infused with coconut, adorned with a luscious Kona coffee salted caramel, and crowned with delicate candied SPAM. It was an unexpected triumph, showcasing how SPAM could be elevated to the realm of high-end gastronomy.
PF Chang’s, a popular chain, brought a familiar favorite to the festival with a SPAM-ified version of their celebrated lettuce wraps, offering a delicious and recognizable option. Meanwhile, the ubiquitous ABC Stores, a staple across Hawaii, served up their beautiful and refreshingly tasty SPAM Kamikazes, adding a vibrant and cool treat to the hot Hawaiian day.
Beyond the incredible food, two lively stages showcased continuous performances by talented bands and entertainers throughout the event, contributing to the palpable energy and festive atmosphere. From the innovative culinary creations to the lively music and community spirit, the Waikiki SPAM Jam was an engaging, highly entertaining festival that truly offers a unique glimpse into Hawaiian culture and its playful embrace of this iconic ingredient. I wholeheartedly recommend attending if your future travel plans include a visit to Honolulu, Hawaii.
Essential Tips for Attending the Waikiki SPAM Jam
If you’re already envisioning yourself at a future Waikiki SPAM Jam, here are five practical tips to ensure you have the most enjoyable and seamless experience possible:
- Bring Cash: While some vendors may accept card payments, the vast majority operate on a cash-only basis. Having enough cash on hand will allow for quicker transactions, minimize wait times, and ensure you don’t miss out on any must-try dishes or merchandise.
- Stay Hydrated with Water: Hawaii’s tropical climate can be warm and humid, especially when you’re navigating a bustling outdoor festival. Although the SPAM Jam felt less cramped than some other food festivals I’ve attended, it’s still crucial to bring your own water bottle or be prepared to purchase water to stay adequately hydrated while indulging in all those delicious SPAM creations.
- Plan Your Culinary Adventure in Advance: With so many incredible vendors and dishes, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. Before you go, take some time to browse the official SPAM Jam website. Identify the specific booths, restaurants, and dishes that pique your interest the most. This strategic planning will help you prioritize and ensure you don’t miss out on your top culinary choices.
- Allocate Ample Time for the Experience: The event spans six hours, from late afternoon into the night. While it might be tempting to just “drop in” for a quick bite, I strongly encourage you to give yourself enough time to truly immerse yourself in the festival. Take a moment to sit back and enjoy the live music performances – the organizers do an exceptional job of booking highly talented local acts, and the quality of the live entertainment genuinely blew me away.
- Prioritize Comfortable Footwear: The Waikiki SPAM Jam takes place on Kalakaua Avenue, one of Honolulu’s busiest and most popular main streets, which is closed off specifically for the event. This means you’ll be doing a lot of walking from one booth to the next. Seating options are typically limited, so wearing comfortable shoes is paramount to fully enjoy your exploration of all the festival has to offer without discomfort.
The date for next year’s event has already been set, so mark your calendars now: April 29, 2017, promises another unforgettable celebration!
