Elegant Accommodations: Your Private Retreat at The Madrones
The Madrones prides itself on offering diverse and thoughtfully designed accommodations, ensuring every guest finds their perfect haven. In the main estate building, overlooking the serene courtyard and conveniently located above the Smith Story tasting room and across from Stone & Embers restaurant, you’ll find four exquisite guest quarters. During our stay, we had the distinct pleasure of residing in Estate Guest Quarter 1, a beautifully appointed suite situated gracefully at the top of the main staircase.

These estate guest quarters are designed more like spacious, private apartments than traditional hotel rooms, offering a true sense of home away from home. Each features a distinct bedroom for restful sleep, a comfortable living room space perfect for unwinding, a convenient small kitchenette, and a full, elegantly appointed bathroom. The kitchenette is equipped with essentials such as a sink, a compact refrigerator, a microwave, and a Nespresso coffee maker, allowing guests the flexibility to enjoy local provisions or prepare light meals. The living room, furnished with a full couch, inviting armchairs, and a flat-screen TV, quickly became our favorite spot to savor morning coffee and pastries sourced from a local bakery, enjoying the peaceful start to our day.
Our room, Estate Guest Quarter 1, was a testament to thoughtful design, tastefully decorated with a harmonious blend of modern comforts and vintage-esque charm. Every detail contributed to an atmosphere of understated luxury. The bedroom, in particular, offered a truly peaceful oasis, ensuring a restorative night’s sleep after a day of exploring Mendocino’s enchanting landscapes and vineyards. This unique lodging option makes The Madrones a top choice for those searching for luxury hotels in Mendocino or comfortable and spacious accommodation in Anderson Valley.
Enchanting Gardens & Unique Cottage Rooms

Beyond the main estate, a different type of charm awaits in the cottage guest quarters, situated across the parking lot. This historical part of the property was once Jim Roberts’ personal residence, which he and Brian meticulously remodeled and thoughtfully divided into distinct accommodations. Each of these unique units bears a name reflecting its original purpose within the house, adding a touch of whimsy and history – you might find yourself in “The Living Room,” “The Kitchen,” “The Master,” “Spare Rooms,” or “Garden View.” Every cottage quarter boasts its own separate entrance, ensuring ample privacy and a secluded experience for guests, making them truly unique places to stay in Mendocino.
For those traveling with families or furry companions, “The Kitchen” cottage room comes highly recommended. It is a beautifully decorated and exceptionally spacious unit, featuring two large, comfortable beds, an expansive master bathroom, and an abundance of gorgeous natural sunlight that bathes the space in warmth. The careful conversion of these historical spaces into modern, comfortable accommodations is a testament to the owners’ vision, offering a distinct and intimate lodging experience.

One of the most compelling features that firmly establishes The Madrones as one of the best places to stay in Mendocino County is its breathtakingly serene and meticulously landscaped gardens. Guests are invited to leisurely stroll through the property, discovering hundreds of different rose varieties that bloom in a riot of color and fragrance throughout the seasons. These magnificent gardens are a labor of love, reportedly cultivated under the expert guidance of owner Jim Roberts’ mother, a true “rose guru.” As you wander the winding paths, taking in the vibrant hues and delicate perfumes, you can truly feel the deep affection and dedication poured into every bloom. The gardens provide a peaceful backdrop for contemplation, a romantic setting for a leisurely walk, or simply a beautiful vista to admire from your private patio. This botanical splendor significantly enhances the overall experience, offering a tranquil escape within the Mendocino wine country.

The Allure of Sun & Cricket Shop

One of the truly distinctive elements that contributes to the unique character of The Madrones is the delightful Sun & Cricket shop. Far more than just a typical hotel lobby, this vibrant space serves as the central point for guest check-ins and check-outs, but it quickly reveals itself to be a treasure trove of souvenirs and intriguing curiosities. Stepping inside is like entering a whimsical world, where you’ll discover an eclectic array of fun, quirky, and often one-of-a-kind items. Some pieces are thoughtfully arranged for display, sparking conversation and wonder, while others are available for purchase, offering perfect gift items or cherished keepsakes from your Mendocino escape.
It’s the curated collection of curiosity shop pieces that truly defines the creative and artistic vibe permeating The Madrones. From antique-inspired trinkets to locally crafted artisan goods, each item tells a story, reflecting the owners’ passion for unique aesthetics and thoughtful design. This charming boutique transforms a simple administrative task into an enjoyable exploration, adding another layer to the rich and multifaceted guest experience at this exceptional Mendocino accommodation. It’s a place where guests can discover a piece of The Madrones to take home, extending the memory of their stay.

On-Site Wine Tasting: The Essence of Mendocino Wine Country
One of the most significant advantages of choosing The Madrones for your Mendocino getaway is its unparalleled access to the region’s renowned wine scene. Not only are you perfectly positioned near numerous world-class wineries and vineyards, but The Madrones offers the ultimate convenience of two exceptional wine tasting rooms right on the property: Smith-Story Wine Cellars and Drew Family Cellars. This unique feature solidifies its reputation as a premier destination for wine enthusiasts seeking luxury hotels in Mendocino.

During our visit, we had the distinct pleasure of meeting Eric Story, co-owner of Smith-Story Wine Cellars. His passion for winemaking was palpable, and his insights enriched our tasting experience immensely. We were particularly captivated by their elegant Cabernet Sauvignon, so much so that we enthusiastically purchased a bottle to savor later. Their rosé also proved to be a delightful revelation – a truly wonderful summer sipper, crisp and refreshing. The Smith-Story tasting room at The Madrones welcomes guests from 12 pm to 5 pm on Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday, extending its hours to 12 pm to 6 pm on Fridays, making it an accessible and enjoyable stop during your stay.

While the Drew Family Cellars tasting room was closed during our specific visit, we were fortunate enough to experience their acclaimed wines at the vibrant Anderson Valley Pinot Noir Festival. It was there that we discovered their exceptional Pinot Noir “Fog-eater,” a truly remarkable vintage that left a lasting impression. We instantly regretted not having purchased a bottle to bring home, a testament to its memorable quality. Drew Family Cellars is celebrated for its dedication to producing world-class Pinot Noir, a varietal for which Anderson Valley is increasingly gaining international recognition. Their tasting room at The Madrones typically operates Thursday through Monday, from 11 am to 5 pm, offering another fantastic opportunity to delve into the local terroir without leaving the property. These on-site tasting rooms underscore why The Madrones is an unparalleled Mendocino accommodation for wine lovers.
Culinary Delights at Stone & Embers Restaurant

While The Madrones does not offer traditional room service, guests can indulge in delightful lunch and dinner options at the convenient and charming Stone & Embers restaurant, located directly on the property. This culinary gem perfectly complements the estate’s serene atmosphere, offering a relaxed dining experience that highlights local flavors. Currently open from 12 pm to 8 pm (closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays), Stone & Embers is celebrated primarily for its authentic wood-fired pizzas, prepared with a rustic touch that imbues each pie with an irresistible smoky flavor. The menu also features a selection of enticing small bites and a carefully curated wine list that proudly showcases local favorites from the abundant Mendocino wine country.
We enjoyed a memorable dinner there one evening. As someone who adheres to a dairy-free diet, the wood-fired pizzas, while tempting, were not an option for me. However, the restaurant readily accommodated, and we opted for an assortment of smaller dishes that were thoughtfully prepared with lighter dairy content, proving both flavorful and satisfying. The commitment to fresh, quality ingredients is evident in every dish, ensuring a delightful gastronomic experience for all.

If your schedule allows for a moment of pure relaxation, we wholeheartedly recommend ordering a bottle of local wine and their irresistible Smoked Potato Beignets (pictured above). Finding a spot in the tranquil courtyard, surrounded by the beauty of The Madrones, and savoring these culinary delights is an experience not to be missed. It’s the perfect way to unwind, connect with your travel companions, and fully immerse yourself in the charm of this Mendocino hotel.
