Even though we encountered some wind and a fresh chill during our outing, the provided wetsuits were incredibly effective, keeping us perfectly warm. 9. Visit the Charming Towns of Westport and Belmullet

The Wild Atlantic Way is not just about its dramatic natural landscapes; it’s also punctuated by a string of utterly adorable towns, each bursting with character and charm. While our itinerary allowed for only a brief visit to these gems, I found myself wishing for more time to delve deeper into each area’s distinct offerings. In Westport, we indulged in a truly creative and exquisitely presented dinner at Cian’s on Bridge Street, a testament to the town’s burgeoning culinary scene. Later, we found ourselves swept into the convivial atmosphere of Matt Molloy’s pub, a legendary establishment owned by the acclaimed Chieftains band member himself. The evening took an unexpected turn as we not only enjoyed several pints but also had the incredible fortune of meeting Matt Molloy in person – a truly authentic Irish pub experience! For comfortable and stylish lodging in Westport, I suggest checking out the beautifully decorated The Wyatt Hotel, perfectly situated for exploring the town.

Another coastal town that deserves a prominent spot on your Wild Atlantic Way itinerary is Belmullet. With a population of roughly 1,000 residents, this town, once dubbed the “Best Place to Go Wild in Ireland” by the Irish Times, lives up to its name. Its rugged, unspoiled beauty provides an abundance of opportunities for adventure lovers, from exhilarating fishing trips and challenging hikes to scenic cycling routes and various other outdoor pursuits. Belmullet embodies the untamed spirit of the Wild Atlantic Way.

During our brief but memorable stop in Belmullet, we relished a delicious lunch at The Talbot Hotel bar. Here, I indulged in an extraordinary feast of incredibly fresh crab legs – a culinary highlight that was simply divine. These towns, each with its own unique flavor, add invaluable layers to the rich tapestry of experiences along Ireland’s west coast.
