Va Piano Winery: A Tuscan Escape in Walla Walla

During a recent girls’ getaway to Walla Walla, our itinerary included a delightful lunch and tasting experience at Va Piano Vineyards. The drive itself was part of the charm; as we traversed the quiet gravel roads, the rolling vineyards eventually parted to reveal a stunning Tuscan-style villa. The sight was truly captivating, immediately setting a tone of relaxed elegance.

Before even stepping inside the tasting room, the atmosphere embraced us. Couples and families dotted the outdoor space, comfortably seated at picnic tables, on porch chairs, or gathered around the inviting firepit in rocking chairs. The air was filled with joyful laughter and animated conversation, creating an incredibly warm and welcoming sensation. This immediate sense of hospitality is a hallmark of Va Piano, a place where visitors instantly feel at home.

Adding to the charm, guests are often greeted by one or both of the vineyard’s friendly dogs. These beloved canine ambassadors are as easy to adore as the exquisite wines themselves, adding another layer of authenticity and warmth to the Va Piano experience.

The Va Piano Story: From Florence to Walla Walla

The very essence of the 7,500 square foot Va Piano winery, its elegant tasting room, and indeed the wines crafted here, draw profound inspiration from owner Justin Wylie’s transformative year studying abroad in Florence, Italy. Like so many who experience the magic of Italy, Justin fell deeply in love with the country’s rich architecture, its inherent hospitality, and the leisurely, appreciative pace of life embodied in the Italian phrase “Va Piano,” which beautifully translates to “Go Slowly.”

Upon returning to his hometown of Walla Walla, Justin, a proud fourth-generation Walla Wallan, embarked on a mission to bring his vision to life. He dreamed of establishing a wine business that reflected the relaxed, inviting, and familial spirit he encountered in Italy. Together with his wife, Liz, he meticulously planted their first vines in 1999. This pivotal moment laid the foundation for what would become Va Piano. By 2005, the Va Piano tasting room officially opened its doors to the public, proudly pouring its inaugural vintages: a stellar 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon and a captivating 2003 Syrah. From that point on, Va Piano has consistently delivered on its promise of quality and a welcoming atmosphere, skillfully creating an authentic Tuscan ambiance without ever feeling artificial or overdone.

The Art of Winemaking: Terroir and Craft

Walla Walla Valley AVA has long been revered for its ability to produce big, bold red wines, a reputation Va Piano proudly upholds and elevates. A significant portion of the grapes used in Va Piano’s exquisite wines are estate grown, allowing for unparalleled control over quality and ripeness from vine to bottle. Justin Wylie, with his keen understanding of viticulture, emphasizes the importance of using grapes sourced from diverse soil types. This deliberate choice, he explains, is crucial for adding layers of complexity and unique character to his wines. The Walla Walla Valley boasts a variety of soils, from ancient loess (wind-blown silt) over basalt bedrock to alluvial deposits, each contributing distinct mineral profiles and growing conditions that ultimately shape the wine’s flavor, aroma, and texture. This thoughtful approach to grape sourcing, combined with meticulous winemaking techniques, ensures that each bottle of Va Piano wine truly expresses the unique terroir of the region.

Tasting the Essence of Walla Walla: Va Piano’s Signature Reds

During our tasting, Va Piano’s red wines truly stood out as some of our absolute favorites of the entire trip, perfectly embodying the region’s renown for robust, full-bodied expressions. The depth, structure, and elegant fruit profiles were consistently impressive. Among them, the 2013 Les Collines Syrah captured my palate and imagination entirely.

2013 Va Piano Les Collines Syrah

The 2013 Les Collines Syrah, priced at $65, is a star within the winery’s esteemed black label reserve collection, and it is nothing short of divine. To me, this particular Syrah magnificently embodies the truest profile of Walla Walla red wines. It presents a deep, captivating purple hue in the glass, hinting at the richness within. On the palate, it delivers a robust and velvety mouthfeel that gracefully lingers through to a smooth, elegant finish. Every sip is an intricate blend of dark berries – think blackberry and black currant – beautifully intertwined with subtle notes of cracked black pepper and, surprisingly, a savory hint of bacon. This distinct flavor profile was perhaps serendipitously enhanced by its pairing with prosciutto-wrapped chicken, creating an unforgettable sensory experience. This is undoubtedly a wine that possesses incredible standalone beauty, yet it also harmonizes exquisitely with a hearty main course or a decadent chocolate dessert, showcasing its remarkable versatility and depth. I absolutely adored the 2013 Les Collines Syrah; bringing just one bottle home was a decision I immediately regretted – I truly should have purchased a case!

2012 Walla Walla Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

Another highlight was the 2012 Walla Walla Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, available at $45. This Cabernet delivered precisely what one expects from a distinguished Walla Walla Cab: a well-structured acidic profile, hints of intriguing spice, and vibrant, bright fruit notes. Expect an inviting bouquet of dark cherry and cassis, complemented by nuances of cedar and a subtle earthiness that speaks to its regional character. Its balanced tannins and persistent finish make it an ideal companion for a perfectly grilled steak or rich pasta dishes.

Beyond the Reds: Va Piano’s Delightful White Wines

While Va Piano is renowned for its powerful reds, the winery also produces some truly standout white wines that deserve equal acclaim. Their commitment to quality extends across the portfolio, offering delightful options for every palate. Among their white wine offerings, one particular vintage truly captured my heart.

2013 Sauvignon Blanc

Va Piano 2013 Sauvignon Blanc bottle and glass

The 2013 Sauvignon Blanc, priced at an accessible $20, was undeniably my favorite among Va Piano’s white selections. It offered a beautifully bright acidity, characteristic of a well-crafted Sauvignon Blanc, yet perfectly balanced. With each sip, distinct notes of crisp pear, delicate honeysuckle, and vibrant citrus—lemon and orange—danced on the palate. It struck a perfect harmony, neither too tart nor overly sweet, simply lovely and refreshing. This wine would be a perfect aperitif or an excellent pairing with fresh seafood, goat cheese, or light salads. It’s a versatile and incredibly enjoyable white wine that truly demonstrates Va Piano’s mastery beyond their celebrated reds. I was so taken by it that I made sure to bring a bottle of this home with me as well!

Perfect Pairings: Culinary Delights at Va Piano

The exquisite wines we tasted at Va Piano were perfectly complemented by a thoughtfully prepared picnic lunch, catered by Olive Marketplace & Cafe. This local Walla Walla establishment is a culinary gem, known for its delectable offerings and its extensive catering services to many of the area’s wineries. Our lunch began with an artfully arranged charcuterie and cheese plate, brimming with an array of lovely local meats, artisanal cheeses, crusty bread, and savory accouterments. It was a delightful exploration of local flavors, each bite enhancing the wines. We also savored a wonderfully fresh and vibrant pear, walnut, and beet salad, offering a delightful interplay of sweet, earthy, and crunchy textures. The highlight, however, was undoubtedly the succulent prosciutto-wrapped chicken skewers – tender, flavorful, and perfectly cooked, creating an ideal pairing for the bolder reds. This entire spread epitomized the ideal winery picnic experience, blending gourmet food with the picturesque vineyard setting. It was a truly memorable and indulgent meal.

It truly offers a unique blend of exceptional wines, Italian-inspired charm, and genuine warmth that makes for an unforgettable experience.
