Celebrating a significant milestone, like a 10-year wedding anniversary, often comes with the delightful pressure of making it truly extraordinary. The quest for the perfect destination can be overwhelming, with countless exquisite options vying for attention. For us, the decision-making process was a journey from grand European aspirations to the sun-kissed shores of Hawaii, a choice that proved to be nothing short of magical for our family.

Crafting the Perfect 10-Year Anniversary Trip: Choosing Maui

Happy family enjoying their stay at Fairmont Kea Lani Maui

Our initial dream for our tenth anniversary was a sentimental return to Vila Vita Parc in Portugal, the enchanting resort where we had spent our honeymoon. It holds a special place in our hearts, a truly magical destination that we enthusiastically recommend to anyone seeking a luxurious European escape. However, the practicalities of international travel for a family of four, especially the cost of plane tickets, quickly brought us back to reality. It was a dream that, for the moment, would have to wait.

This redirection led us to Hawaii, a destination I had previously explored for work, but one entirely new to my husband and children. The prospect of introducing them to the islands’ unparalleled beauty and vibrant culture filled me with excitement. The next challenge was pinpointing the ideal island and, crucially, the perfect accommodation. After extensive research, consulting recommendations from friends on platforms like Facebook and Twitter, and weighing various options, the Fairmont Kea Lani in Wailea, Maui, emerged as the clear favorite. Looking back, it was undeniably the finest decision we could have made for our family’s anniversary celebration.

Luxurious Living: Exploring Your Fairmont Kea Lani Hotel Suite

One of the Fairmont Kea Lani’s most distinguishing features, especially for families, is its all-suite accommodation policy. Every guest enjoys the luxury of a spacious suite, providing ample room to relax and unwind. Our standard king bed suite was impressively large and thoughtfully designed. Upon entering, guests are greeted by a convenient mini-kitchen area, equipped with a sink, microwave, fridge, and coffee maker – perfect for preparing snacks or light meals for the family. This transitions seamlessly into a comfortable living space, featuring a cozy sitting area with a media center, a pullout sofa for additional sleeping arrangements, and a functional table ideal for dining or catching up on work.

The opulence extends to the truly enormous bathroom, a haven of relaxation. It boasts a generously sized marble vanity with double pedestal sinks, a luxurious jetted tub perfect for soaking away the day’s adventures, and a separate, spacious walk-in shower. Such amenities ensure comfort and convenience, particularly when traveling with a family.

Our Fairmont Kea Lani suite also featured a separate, private bedroom, providing a peaceful retreat. It housed a comfortable King-sized bed and offered ample storage with two closets and numerous drawers. Both the bedroom and the living room areas provided direct access to our private patio, a tranquil spot where we could savor the gentle Hawaiian breezes and enjoy the views in between our island explorations.

Initially, we harbored a slight disappointment about not securing an upper-floor suite with a sweeping ocean view from a grand lanai. However, our ground-floor suite revealed an unexpected and delightful bonus: direct access to an expansive, manicured green lawn. This became an instant hit with our children, who would gleefully open either the bedroom or living room door and sprint out to play. This unexpected feature proved to be incredibly practical and added an extra layer of joy to our stay, offering a safe and convenient outdoor play area right outside our door.

Aquatic Delights: The Fairmont Kea Lani Pools & Beach Access

Fairmont Kea Lani's family-friendly pools, including a shallow kiddie pool

When selecting where to stay in Maui, excellent beach and pool access are often top priorities for discerning travelers, especially families. The Fairmont Kea Lani masterfully delivers on both fronts, offering a diverse array of aquatic experiences that cater to every age and preference. The resort boasts three distinct pools, ensuring that every guest finds their perfect spot for relaxation or play.

Our family gravitated towards the Lagoon Pool area, particularly the dedicated kiddie pool, which was just one foot deep – perfect for our three-year-old who was still getting comfortable in deeper waters. Adjacent to it were other sections of the Lagoon Pool, typically starting at three to three-and-a-half feet deep, offering plenty of space for older children and adults to splash and swim. Securing lounge chairs by the pools required an early start to the day, but once settled, it was easy to lose track of time, soaking up the Hawaiian sun, enjoying invigorating dips, and feeling the gentle ocean breezes. This was, in every sense, pure paradise.

For those seeking a tranquil escape, the resort also features a separate adults-only pool. While we, with our two young children, didn’t have the opportunity to venture there, we consistently observed its serene and almost empty ambiance during our walks past. This suggests that while the Fairmont Kea Lani is incredibly family-friendly, it also thoughtfully provides quiet havens for adult guests seeking peace and solitude.

Beyond the pools, the resort offers direct access to the magnificent Wailea Beach, consistently ranked among the world’s best. Growing up near the Oregon coast, my children are natural beach lovers, but the unique allure of Wailea Beach truly captivated them. The ocean water here is remarkably warm, encouraging extended play in the gentle waves. The Fairmont Kea Lani also provides complimentary activities like canoe and outrigger canoe excursions for guests aged 10 and older, inviting deeper exploration of the azure waters. We are already looking forward to returning when our children are old enough to participate in these thrilling ocean adventures, which also include opportunities for snorkeling and stand-up paddleboarding, often available for rent directly from the beach hut.

The Heart of Aloha: Unrivaled Customer Service

While the luxurious accommodations and stunning amenities are undoubtedly impressive, what truly elevated our stay at the Fairmont Kea Lani was the genuinely warm, attentive, and highly personalized service we received. From the moment we set foot on the meticulously maintained grounds until our reluctant departure, every interaction with the staff was imbued with the authentic spirit of aloha. This consistent level of care is a hallmark of luxury Hawaiian resorts, but the Fairmont Kea Lani executes it with exceptional grace.

Every team member we encountered greeted us with a radiant smile and a heartfelt “aloha!” What was particularly striking was their ability to remember our names and proactively ensure our vacation was nothing less than perfect. Their dedication to guest satisfaction was evident in every thoughtful gesture. We extend our sincere gratitude to the entire staff of the Fairmont Kea Lani for such an outstanding display of hospitality. Special appreciation goes to the kind women who meticulously prepared our room each night with their turn-down service, and to Lia & Chewy, who provided delightful and efficient lunch service from the Polo Beach Bar & Grill by the poolside. Their efforts transformed a great vacation into an extraordinary one.

Culinary Journeys: Dining at the Fairmont Kea Lani

While a separate, detailed post could easily be dedicated to the exceptional dining experiences found at the Fairmont Kea Lani and across Maui (and indeed, I’ve written one: Best Places to Eat in Maui), it’s important to highlight the diverse and exquisite culinary options available directly at the resort. From casual poolside bites to elegant fine dining, the Fairmont Kea Lani caters to every palate and occasion. Guests can indulge in fresh, local Hawaiian ingredients transformed into delectable dishes, often with breathtaking ocean views as a backdrop. Whether you’re craving a relaxed breakfast, a quick lunch, or a memorable dinner, the resort’s restaurants offer a gastronomic journey that complements the overall luxury experience.

A Worthwhile Splurge: The Investment in Unforgettable Memories

It’s no secret that Maui is a premier luxury destination, and the Fairmont Kea Lani, as a top-tier resort, reflects this exclusivity. Our anniversary trip was undoubtedly a significant investment. However, considering it was our 10-year wedding anniversary and, crucially, our very first true family vacation as a unit of four (excluding trips primarily for work or visiting relatives), it was a splurge that we deemed absolutely worth every single penny. The priceless memories created, the shared laughter, and the unparalleled relaxation made it an invaluable experience. It underscored the fact that some moments are simply too special to compromise on, especially when they involve celebrating love and family.
