Our wait stretched over an hour, a testament to its popularity, but also a fair warning for visitors: arrive early, especially since Bowpicker prides itself on serving only fresh-caught fish, meaning they occasionally (and I’m told, often) run out later in the day.

Multiple locals enthusiastically declared Bowpicker serves the absolute best fish & chips on the entire Oregon coast, a bold claim that intrigued me. Unlike most restaurants that typically offer halibut or cod, Bowpicker distinguishes itself by serving generously portioned, incredibly fresh TUNA fish. And yes, the consensus was correct – it is utterly delicious. The tuna is encased in what might be one of the most flavorful batters I’ve ever experienced with fish & chips. The fish itself is wonderfully meaty, a delightful contrast to the flakier texture of cod or halibut, offering a more substantial and satisfying bite. Perched directly on the water’s edge, Bridgewater Bistro boasts expansive picture windows that offer breathtaking panoramic vistas. While you dine, you can enjoy stunning views of the majestic Columbia River and the impressive Astoria-Megler Bridge, creating a dynamic and engaging backdrop. During our dinner, we were captivated by the sight of large cargo barges gracefully gliding by, and what appeared to be a cruise ship, adding an extra layer of excitement to our meal. The immersive experience of dining with such a dramatic natural and industrial tableau is truly worth the indulgence, with the exceptional food and beverages serving only to enhance this incredible setting.

My husband opted for the ahi tuna steak, a hearty and rich selection thanks in part to its delectable mushroom-veal demi-glace sauce. This impressive dish was accompanied by seasonal vegetables and a zesty lemon risotto, offering a symphony of flavors and textures.

Absolutely wrong! This institution defies expectations, offering a captivating and surprisingly interactive exploration of the rich maritime history of the Columbia River and the Pacific Ocean. It’s an expansive museum, housing six distinct galleries that delve into various aspects of nautical life, from early exploration to modern shipping. Visitors can immerse themselves in the experience with a fascinating tugboat simulator, browse extensive photo galleries, and access a comprehensive research library. The museum also hosts an impressive collection of touring exhibits throughout the year, ensuring there’s always something new and intriguing to discover.

Right outside the museum, a significant piece of history awaits: the Lightship Columbia. This vessel holds the distinction of being the last serving lightship in the United States, having been retired in 1983. It’s a tangible link to a bygone era of maritime navigation and a poignant reminder of the brave souls who worked tirelessly to guide ships safely. While our visit unfortunately coincided with the interior museum being closed, we were able to peek inside, and I must admit, it exceeded my expectations even without fully stepping foot in. I eagerly anticipate the day we can return to explore the interior exhibits with the kids!

Instead, we thoroughly enjoyed strolling around the museum’s exterior, taking in the grandeur of the Lightship Columbia and soaking in the tranquil views of the sun setting over the Columbia River and the majestic Astoria-Megler Bridge. Downtown Astoria, particularly Commercial Street, has undergone a significant transformation since my childhood, evolving into a bustling and vibrant hub. To truly experience the charm of this area, I highly recommend parking on Commercial Street itself or on one of the parallel streets, such as Duane Street or Marine Drive, and simply enjoying a leisurely walk. This allows you to fully immerse yourself in the local atmosphere, discovering hidden gems around every corner.

During our stroll, after energizing ourselves with coffee and pastries from Street 14 Coffee, we stumbled upon an adorable toy shop and a delightful home goods store, showcasing the variety of local businesses that thrive here.
