Finding the perfect gathering spot that accommodates diverse groups and tastes can be a challenge. Whether it’s a bustling family reunion with kids, a lively dinner with friends, or a casual lunch, the ideal restaurant needs to be spacious, offer a vibrant yet comfortable ambiance, and be conveniently located. Gustav’s Pub and Grill perfectly fits this description, making it a beloved choice for residents of the Pacific Northwest.

With strategic locations in Northeast Portland, Tigard, Clackamas, Oregon, and Vancouver, Washington, Gustav’s ensures that a delightful German culinary experience is always within easy reach. These multiple venues make it an exceptional meeting point for families spread across different towns, providing a consistent and enjoyable dining experience. Beyond just families, Gustav’s is renowned for its ability to host large groups with ease, providing ample space and a lively atmosphere where conversations can flow freely without disturbing other diners – a welcome feature for any group, big or small. In fact, it’s a go-to for many, from business lunches to celebratory dinners with friends.

Gustav’s proudly operates as the cherished sister restaurant to Der Rheinlander, an iconic establishment that has been serving classic and innovative German food and beverages to Portlanders since 1963. This deep-rooted heritage imbues Gustav’s with an authentic spirit, ensuring that every dish and drink is crafted with generations of tradition and expertise. Our recent visit was particularly exciting, as we had the exclusive opportunity to sample their latest Winter Specials Menu, a seasonal selection inspired directly by the executive chef’s recent immersive journey back to Germany. This commitment to fresh, inspired, and authentic offerings truly sets Gustav’s apart as a beacon of German hospitality and gastronomy in the region.

Experience Germany’s Finest: An Unrivaled German Beer Selection at Gustav’s

No authentic German dining experience is complete without a robust selection of fine German beers, and Gustav’s Pub and Grill delivers magnificently. Each location boasts an impressive array of at least 18 imported German beers on tap, offering a rich tapestry of flavors and styles to satisfy both connoisseurs and curious newcomers alike. From crisp lagers to malty bocks, the variety is designed to transport your taste buds straight to the beer halls of Bavaria.

For those new to the wonderful world of German brewing, the Beer Sampler is an absolute must-try. This curated experience allows you to choose any four beers currently on tap, providing a perfect introduction to the diverse profiles of German ales and lagers. Our sampler, a fantastic starting point for exploration, featured:

  • Hofbräu Original Helles: A bright, golden lager known for its balanced, mild flavor and refreshing finish, a true Bavarian classic.
  • Paulaner Oktoberfest: A rich, malty, and full-bodied lager traditionally brewed for the famous Oktoberfest celebration, offering notes of caramel and toasted bread.
  • Hofbräu Hefeweisen: A cloudy, effervescent wheat beer characterized by its fruity (banana) and spicy (clove) aromas, a quintessential German wheat ale.
  • Spaten Optimator: A robust, dark doppelbock with a complex, malty sweetness, often described as a “liquid bread” and a historical favorite.

Beyond the extensive beer offerings, Gustav’s also caters to all preferences with a thoughtfully curated selection of cocktails, including creative concoctions and classic favorites. For wine enthusiasts, a small but solid wine list provides excellent pairings for your meal, ensuring there’s something for everyone to enjoy. On colder evenings, we highly recommend warming up with the traditional Glüwein, a delightful hot spiced wine. This cozy drink features Merlot steeped with sweet spices, honey, and the vibrant zest of orange and lemon, creating an aromatic and comforting beverage that perfectly captures the spirit of European winter markets.

Tantalizing Starters: Unforgettable Appetizers at Gustav’s

The journey through Gustav’s culinary delights begins with an array of appetizers designed to awaken your palate and set the stage for a memorable meal. A perennial favorite and an absolute staple for any visit is the iconic Bavarian Pretzel. This isn’t just any pretzel; it’s a massive, impressive creation, often described as “bigger than your head,” offering a truly authentic German experience. Perfectly toasted to a golden-brown crisp on the outside, it yields to a wonderfully soft, slightly sweet, and delightfully doughy interior. Each enormous pretzel is served alongside a robust whole grain mustard, providing a tangy contrast that perfectly complements its rich flavor. It’s an ideal appetizer for sharing and pairs exceptionally well with a cold German beer.

Another reliable and much-loved starter at Gustav’s Pub and Grill is their celebrated fondue. Far from offering just one or two choices, Gustav’s provides a tempting variety of fondue options, allowing you to customize your experience. During our last visit, the Pesto & Sausage Fondue garnered enthusiastic praise from our fellow diners. This savory fondue offers a delightful blend of rich pesto and flavorful sausage, creating a warm, comforting, and deeply satisfying dish perfect for dipping and sharing. The communal aspect of fondue also makes it an excellent choice for fostering conversation and connection around the table.

Seasonal Delights: Unveiling Gustav’s Hearty Winter Menu Specials

German cuisine is celebrated for its hearty, comforting, and generously portioned dishes, and Gustav’s Winter Specials Menu perfectly encapsulates this cherished tradition. Each seasonal offering is a warm embrace, designed to provide a rich and satisfying culinary experience, especially during the colder months. Our executive chef’s recent trip to Germany has undeniably infused these specials with an unparalleled level of authenticity and inspiration, bringing true European winter flavors to your table.

Schweinshaxe: A Traditional German Feast

Leading the lineup of seasonal stars is the magnificent Schweinshaxe, a massive 16-ounce brined and roasted ham hock that truly embodies the expectation of a classic German meal. This impressive dish is a feast for the senses, starting with its preparation: a meticulous brining process infuses the pork with deep flavor, followed by slow roasting that transforms the skin into an irresistible, crackling masterpiece. The result is absolutely perfection: every bite of the skin is as crispy and flavorful as you could wish for, while the meat beneath remains incredibly juicy and tender, practically falling off the bone.

The Schweinshaxe is served with creamy mashed potatoes, providing a comforting and smooth contrast to the rich pork. A generous pour of savory beer jus adds another layer of depth, infusing the dish with subtle malty notes. To complete this traditional German experience, fresh grated horseradish is served alongside, offering a piquant kick that beautifully cuts through the richness of the meat, elevating the entire dish to a new level of culinary delight.

Gegrillte Hähnchenbrust Mit Gebratenen Pilzen: A Lighter, Flavorful Option

For those seeking a delectable alternative, the Gegrillte Hähnchenbrust Mit Gebratenen Pilzen offers a lighter yet equally satisfying experience. This dish features a perfectly grilled chicken breast, tender and moist, accompanied by a luxurious pepper cream sauce that adds a creamy richness without overpowering the natural flavors of the chicken. The inclusion of housemade spätzle, those delightful little German egg noodles, provides a wonderfully chewy texture and an authentic touch to the meal. Adding depth and an earthy complexity, perfectly sautéed mushrooms complement the chicken beautifully, creating a balanced and harmonious plate that is both comforting and elegantly flavorful.

Hausgemachte Kalbfleischpflanzerl: A Culinary Revelation

Perhaps the most delightful revelation on the winter menu is the Hausgemachte Kalbfleischpflanzerl. While the name might be a mouthful for non-German speakers, the taste is nothing short of “absolutely delicious” – a sentiment strongly echoed by everyone who tries it. This dish features meticulously crafted housemade veal and pork meatballs, pan-seared to achieve a perfect crust and retain their juicy tenderness. Each succulent meatball is served with the same delectable pepper cream sauce that graces the chicken dish, unifying the flavors across the special menu.

Accompaniments include a classic Bavarian potato salad, offering a tangy and robust counterpoint to the rich meatballs, and a scattering of fresh greens to add a touch of brightness and texture. While I only managed a couple of bites during our tasting, the depth of flavor and comforting satisfaction of these meatballs made them my personal favorite on the entire winter specials menu. It’s a dish that highlights the exceptional quality of ingredients and the culinary skill present at Gustav’s.

Sweet Endings and Unforgettable Service at Gustav’s

After indulging in such a magnificent feast, it’s only fitting to conclude your dining experience with a sweet finale. Gustav’s offers a selection of desserts designed to provide a perfect ending to your meal. While dietary restrictions sometimes limit my choices, I had the pleasure of tasting their exquisite chocolate mousse. Even a single bite was enough to confirm its delightful richness and smooth, luxurious texture. Judging by how quickly those beautifully presented glasses of chocolate mousse transformed into empty vessels around the table, it’s safe to say my fellow diners were equally impressed and thoroughly enjoyed this decadent treat. I wholeheartedly recommend ordering this for dessert on your next visit to Gustav’s; it’s a delightful way to complete your German culinary adventure.
